I think we have been spoiled by semi-daily updates. BACK IN MY DAY, we had to wait for updates ONCE A WEEK!! And the puzzles were uphill, in the snow, both ways!

Needless to say, patience.

Mails are out!
And finally something to decrypt too Very Happy

Here is the mail :

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Staff,

As I mentioned a few days ago, we were going to be handing over to you some evidence recovered recently from a suspect we believe was involved with the theft of Black Rain data. Now is that time.

What we have are encrypted messages from a Blackberry phone the suspect was carrying. We have checked out much of the other possessions on his body, but I will list them here for full disclosure...

1) a 12 pack of Dentyne gum (one piece missing)
2) a pack of matches (from the Days Inn) - nothing written on them, no matches missing
3) a deck of cards (worn out, nothing out of the ordinary with the deck, order kept for posterity)
4) car keys belonging to a rental car which appears to be clean (a silver Ford Fusion)

No money or identification was found on him.

The messages appear to occur between this phone and Jared Hoit's, but as I said the messages themselves are encrypted. I would like you all to do what you can to decrypt the messages and get back to me. We have a few people decent with decryption (Jared and Marty as well) but we don't want any internal staffers looking at it, so we are leaving it to you.

Here are the messages, starting with the last one received from Jared's phone (which was unread) to the phone we have. We have x'd out the number of the phone we have as it is not important to the decryption, plus we're still using it to determine more information on the man in custody.

And some thoughts (also posted on opcomm)

Quote:
From the way the encryption is structured it could be a Vigenère or Playfair cipher (5x5) but the fact that there was a card deck present with the suspect who seems to have intentionally carried the least things possible leads me to believe that we should look into a Solitaire cipher first.
I have already requested the order of the deck of cards from Mr. Newold and am waiting for his reply.

+1 on the Solitaire cipher, although I'm wondering if the Dentyne Gum has any significance...

Not sure how this fits in yet, but "5" might have something to do with it, as each of the coded words has 5 letters

Apparently it's traditional to break the message into lots of 5 letters in the same case, it makes discerning letter patterns a bit tougher.

What's an ARG without something to decrypt? Wink

Solitaire cipher is convoluted as hell and sounds like a heckuva lot of work... Is there an automated system for it anywhere?

Worst case, I could write one... Razz

ETA: Somebody beat me to it...

http://www.schneier.com/solitaire.html

In the example at the bottom of the page, the crypt text is split in to five letter pairs as well.

ETA #2: The C++ code on that page does have a decryption algorithm. If we do get the ordered card deck, I can probably run it through.

I would suggest using Cryptool instead of writing one though Wink

Heres the DL link : http://www.cryptool.org/index.php/en/download-topmenu-63.html

Make sure to take the 1.4.3 Version as the new Beta 2.0 does not support Solitaire cipher yet (afaik)

EDIT : Still no news from Eric Newold though, in case you were wondering :/

I know the tool, but wasn't aware it did Solitaire.

In response to my request for the card sequence:

Which seems odd from a "meta" standpoint... If that is relevant to the puzzle we shouldn't have to wait for it. Maybe that's just their way of slowing us down.

My response to Eric

Eric,

i know there have been numerous requests already for details of the cards and their order, but is there any chance we can also have photo's of the other evidence, keys, gum, matches etc.

Any information that we can glean in relation to the cipher that might be held here is of vital importance for clearing both Jared and Marty. I suspect, though again i feel its more of a gut instinct, that neither party is involved and there may be a third undisclosed party working to ensure that we are in-fighting and bickering amongst ourselves.

Although i have only been an Agent for a short period of time, i find it difficult to believe that Jared or Marty, the only operatives with the knowledge to remove the stolen Black Rain data would be foolhardy enough to think it could be carried off without suspicion being aimed in their direction.

Industrial Espionage seems very likely!

And Erics happy sounding reply was :

No, I can't get you a photo of the evidence and you know I don't care that you don't think Jared or Marty is involved. Work on the decryption and get me the name of the one involved. The sooner you do that the sooner we move on.

The only infighting going on here are between those trying to move Saver beyond this issue and those who will back Jared no matter what. The only thing that matters here is that my company prospers Warren, so make sure you have your priorities set.

There's also the Mirdek cipher for card decks, possibly worth looking into

The fact that Jared and Marty are blaming one another makes me think they are in it together. How better to confuse things by saying the other did it.

I think it's just another small detail to make the game seem that much more realistic. In an actual scenario, the CEO wouldn't just have sequenced the cards "just in case" his agents needed it. He's coming to us, after all, meaning although he has agents and internal staff that understand decryption, he himself has little knowledge on the subject.

Just received the email with the order of the cards - I'm just going to sit back and let you guys do all the crypto-magic... I'm too tired to even attempt it!
