Chat-Solutions Java Client / DS9 Server Down

Due to changes in policy at Chat-Solutions' ISP, the DS9 IRC server will no longer be run. This is the server that hosted the java chat client that many of you use. The java client depended on connecting to DS9 locally, so this means that the java chat will be down at least for the time being, and possibly permanently.

Chat-Solutions has put a call out for anyone with a Linux/Unix box on a broadband connection that would be willing to donate hosting of the IRC daemon and java client. If you are interested in doing this, or know someone who is, please contact me.

I am looking into other options for a java chat client so that those of you who do not wish to, or who are unable to, install local IRC client programs can still connect and chat. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Also, if there are any java coders out there who have a little spare time, please contact me.

If you do decide to install your own IRC client, you can connect to the Chat-Solutions server at either irc.chat-solutions.org (US) or irc2.chat-solutions.org (Europe), using 6667 as the port number.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks for your understanding!

I've put up a new java-based chat applet on Unfiction at http://www.unfiction.com/chat/. This applet requires Netscape 4.08+ or IE4.0+.
