The first "test" has been posted: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/01/decoder-ring-presents-underworld-code/

With a little Googling, the decoding is pretty straightforward. I'm scouring the magazine for any hobo code references, but thus far haven't found anything . Anyone have access to the ipad version? The site says that the ipad has all of the tests, so does that mean that in theory we could see all of the tests right away?

The biggest puzzle right now is where the references to the languages are hidden -- the only one that's blatantly obvious is the hobo code. Nu shu hint below, beneath the spoiler cut.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You can reverse-engineer the alphabet since the different nu shu characters spell out the names of the different secret languages

I'm getting so far for the vice lords:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
J, E, I, C, K, G, A, D, B, L, H, F

And we do need to figure out where these things are hidden. Where should we look?

EDIT: got answers for the tic-tac.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
G, M,B, H, I, A, E, L, G, D, C, K, O, F, P, N

EDIT: and answers for the thugs. Not quite as sure of these; someone should check.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
B, J, F, C, G, L, A, D, I, E, K, H

EDIT: on a roll. Answers for the rogue's lexicon.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
S, M, N, F, C, P, L, J, A, G, B, K, R, D, Q, E, O, T, I, H

for example "most criminals find one dodge and stick to it"

seems as though our group of delinquents is making good head way with the puzzles (blue mouse im looking at you >_> ), but now that we've nearly solved them, we need to figure out 2 things: wjere are the references in the magazines. *the gang tattoo question might be one, the history of criminals mentions the scoundrels lexicon, of course theres the mushroom picture, and a possible lead with the artwork in the underground band article...* and we also need to figure out how we contact the ring, and by what means....
EDIT: according to the latest code, next week our way to jamming our foot in the proverbial door will be revealed Razz
*also, not sure what you mean by reverse engineer it >: *

The final puzzle has been posted. Like the first puzzle, it consists of a set of 21 images. Attached to each image is one of the Chinese characters, so we effectively now have a new mapping of the 21-letter alphabet.

So C=Shark, P=Snake, etc.

At this point I suppose we're to map these images to the magazine somehow. However, I can't seem to find anyplace to start doing that. Anyone have a clue as to where to go from here?

I assumed everyone else solved that ages ago. The Shu nu characters map to the alphabet, in order from A to Z, minus the letters FJKWZ. Using that, the 8 sets of characters around the edge of the puzzle spell out the 8 underworld languages that we saw in tests 1-8.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Hobo Code
Polari
Underground Railroad Quilts
Russian Prison Tattoos
Vice Lords Symbols
Rogues Lexicon
Tic Tac
Thuggee Omens
