If 1962 is a birthdate, the person in question would be 17 in the movie...

A little old for the boy with the camera.

Josh is rumored to be 18 in '79 from his email. He was born after 1962. I think the date is the day of the trainwreck.

And we're back to Kennedy speeches on nuclear test (ban) which is how the game began with the STIES newspaper printouts quoting JFK's 1963 speech.

Certainly helps solidify the notion that both the Space Race and nuclear testing/arms race figures into the backstory of SUPER 8 somehow.

Probably just a coincidence.

Hey, this may have something to do with the September 19 1962.
Quote:
A close encounter from which the contact almost were able to bring back an alien book was when the American woman Betty Hill on September 19, 1962 claimed to have been abducted alongside her husband Barney. The event is well known and is regarded as the first "traditional abduction. This is what Betty Hill told Boston physician Benjamin Simon during one of many hypnoses.

"It looked almost like - I'm not sure - it was not like in a reference book - the writing did not run horizontally, but from the top down./.../ It looked different, though I have seen written Japanese. There were dots (above the letters). It had straight lines and curved lines", Betty Hill never did write down any of her observations. To our help are only her oral testimonies. (7)

Weird, I started looking up their info and all the site references I've found give the year of their abduction as 1961, not '62.

1962 and Classics Illustrated...

Looking around online about the issue of Moby Dick that Josh owns... that cover was added to the reprints in 1962 (around May, one site said.) Maybe something with that comic is going to tie into the September 19th date, since that book may have been around the home for TROGL to be written in there around that time.

All this staring at clips from the trailers have finally fried my brain, me thinks.

The first trailer suggests the train wreck occurs in 1979, so the date is 15 years before the train wreck.

Also, on Sept. 19th 1962:

Since Cloverfield had the 1-18-08.com site, I've been trying all kinds of combinations of September 19, 1962 / 09-19-62 etc. but haven't come up with anything - but I haven't tried everything yet.

I been skimming through official NASA sites for the time around 19/09/62 all morning.
Couldn't find anything that nails that date. But 1962 was a time when NASA and the USAF struggled over the leadership/interests of the "Space-Race-program".
Several thoughts on my survey (my brain melted by reading all those pages, so it definitely is a wiiide stretch but anyways...):

The Mercury program:
- in Nov. 1961 the chimp Enos had its big trip.
- in Oct. 1962 they had an absolute perfect ride with 6 orbits that practically ended the Mercury cause now bigger goals were to be aimed at.
- in May 1963 last official mercury flight with (in)famous G. Cooper on board.

The Gemini program:
- officially started in Jan. 1962
- was a "learn-how-to" between Mercury (successfully orbiting earth) and Apollo (final destination moon)
- now around Sept. 1962 it didn't look too good for the Gemini.
Costs had exploded, things went bad (landing-parachutes didn't work, problems with the ejection seats and some other minor things).
- They found out that they coudn't use the usual battery packs anymore because of weight restrictions. So, the General Electrics company came in handy with their relatively new fuel cells. In a fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen react to produce water and heat. The stuff we would like so much to drive cars with nowadays.
Taken from the footnotes of http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/SP-4203/ch5-3.htm is where the date roughly matches:
Quote:
J. L. Schanz and E. K. Bullock, "Gemini Fuel Cell Power Source - First Spacecraft Application," ARS Paper No. 2561-62, presented at the American Rocket Society Space Power Systems Conference, Santa Monica, Calif., 25-28 Sept. 1962

And that may be a connection to Mysterio and A. Minker. The power source. What if they found the "alternative power source" just around that time, on Sept. 19th 1962... but it got out of control (the train crash) and... I don't know, whatever.

On the other hand, 19/09/62 could just be a hommage to "The Virginian", a TV show which debuted on that date.

this is great stuff, Seeker! Plus, I think that this info could be really relevant to the backstory they are creating here for the film.

Yes, interesting, how are these facts involved in the backstory.
