Perhaps something by Driveshaft or Geronimo Jackson.
Imho Geronimo Jackson would better fit into the 1970ies atmosphere.

My girlfriend predicted Geronimo Jackson scoring this movie from the first moment we saw the trailer+JJ.

That said, I think movies like this do best with either a soundtrack scored specifically for the movie, or with period tunes selected very, very carefully to fit the flick. J.J. is good about this kind of thing, I expect good things either way. He's kind of like the Stephen King of film (don't get carried away detracting me there, I only mean that they have a firm understanding/attachment to rock n' roll).

Yeah, the atmosphere and epoche were pretty fitting for Geronimo Jackson. Perhaps we will see some posters on the walls as little easter egg Smile

I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not but the music in the trailer is actually from the movie Cocoon....the song is called "The Ascension" by James Horner.....take a listen to compare http://www.goear.com/listen/01cc4c3/cocoon-the-ascension-james-horner

Honestly I would love some The Bad Plus in this movie. Extremely thought out yet casual jazz. Drums, piano, bass. I still don't know the tone of Super 8 so I have hope some of this music could fit.
