All the phones on the underground station are modern BT payphones. The screen would tell you if there was a call coming in on top of the ringing sound.

I tested 2 of them early yesterday and it rang and someone from the public picked it up. For those going today and tomorrow. Please note your mobile will not work in the station.

Going by the coord's the payphones in the station has to be the right ones. They sit in the north eastern part of the station just below where the lights are. Between the mens toilet entrance which leads to trocodero? and the womans tolilet entrance which leads to soho. Pretty much bang on the coords, if you remove the road above Smile

I tested one of the phones with my mobile and did not notice the screen change. Perhaps a team of two people should check that today.

If you have any doubt, look at a good paper map if you can find one that has Lat and Long on it. Find where two major coordinates intersect and see if Mapquest has it right.

Thanks for the explanation of the projections being only for maps. Unfortunately, that is where this idea seems to break down for us as most maps are done by Ordinance Survey, which has a different projection than WGS84. If I recall correctly, they base everything off a known point on a wall by the seaside (cannot be bothered to remember where exactly).

Important Point 4: I don't want you folks to get discouraged or to think this is some kind of impossible snipe hunt. Misinformation will make folks throw their hands up in despair if they think they have to check 10 different areas for payphones.

Thankfully, this is the only set of payphones for at least 50 meters in any direction, and they are right on the GPS coordinates (I had a GPS unit).

I am pretty sure you will not be able to find any. I stood in the pedestrian triangle and looked in all directions. I feel sorry for the guy that looked a little like you who I asked if he was a beekeeper. Laughing

Malrog wrote:
Multimap map of the location. Can someone tell me just how close to the point marked on that map did the GPS reader put you yesterday?

Right on it. Although technically I was standing in the pedestrian triangle right next to it. I decided getting a perfect fix on a point 3 meters away (in the middle of the street) was not entirely necessary. The only problem with the multimap link is that the aerial photo moves the circle. I would not bother with it.

Also, how sure are people that the phones in the tube station are the correct ones?

Very sure. After confirming the spot above ground, I remembered my wife postulating a few days before about the PMs possibly placing the phone in the Underground. I went through a few of the tube entrances to make sure that the phones were in the correct place.

There's 14 phones in total in the row Rogue Element already reported about. Starting from the right, we're missing for sure the first, second and sixth in the row. We also lost control of the 4th and 13th for some of the time we were expecting Melissa's call.

You can place the 13th phone (second from left) on a low priority. No one picked it up until 18:09, and it is a teletype phone for the deaf and has no phone number listed on it.

That is what I did. Coming from my house in Oxford to the axon took about 3 hours total (which unfortunately makes this the first and last time I showed up Sad). My wife joined me, and we watched Wimbledon in Leicester Square (good date movie). We got home at 02:00. Coffee

Thanks for all the responses & info guys.

Ariock: I have tested picking up the phones a little after the supposed time, but that was on the old coordinates. However, I've also noticed that when calling the phone it display's the words "Incoming Call" on the screen, so hopefully that would appear even if the phone didn't ring *shrug*

OK, I need to know if anyone else will be in London today (I can't do this by myself! I will be getting into Paddington station at 16:11 and will then make my way to Piccadilly circus, which I will scout out. So if anyone wants to meet up with me, either post in this thread or PM me.

Alternatively, if I'm the only person going today, is it even worth my while going? Should I wait til a day when more people are going, so we can cover all the necessary phones? Reason I ask is that I can't keep going into London every evening, cos that's spending money I just don't have!

Come on the London Axonators!

I'll be there, and I think Adrian, Rogue Element and lank mentioned they'll be there too, but I'm not certain. I'm doing other things in London today, though, so I probably won't show up until 15:45 or so.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure whether I can make it or not today... hope it goes well anyway!

The first, second and thirteenth phones check out as duds. We lost control of the sixth and fourth so weren't able to check those.

I won't be able to go back tomorrow, but hopefully someone else will and
find the phone, because this is getting really exhausting.

[edit]The axon hunting team was just Malrog and me today. After we finished with the phones we went up to the surface to check how far the phones were from the axon point.

Turns out they're not as spot-on as the Dean Street phones, but they're only about 10, 15 metres east, and still a lot closer than anything else.[/edit]

*le sigh*

No ringing phones again! One more waste of time and money. I'm getting heartily sick of the whole thing. Why the Censored did the PMs have to pick such a stupidly busy place for the Axon? I mean, seriously, it's probably the busiest part of the busiest city in the whole flippin' country! Suffice to say, I've had enough of it all, and I won't be going back. In the words of Eminem, Censored that Censored Censored!!!

Now that I've got the rant over, though I'm still incredibly pissed, here are the facts.

Above ground I did a little bit of scouting around, and found a pair of phones in black phone boxes outside the Pizza Hut at the top of Regent Street (that's where Regent St goes south out of Piccadilly Circus). These are the closes above-ground phones to the GPS coordinates, but we all know that black phone boxes don't take incoming calls. I tested this, and found that while my mobile seemed to think it was making a call, the payphone didn't ring, and when I picked it up I couldn't hear myself in it, but then when I hung up I could hear that through my mobile. Weird and freaky and quite mysterious *wiggles fingers*
The only other above-ground phones I could find were a pair of red phone boxes at the beginning of Shaftesbury Avenue, but these weren't on the coordinates either. It may be worth investigating these though *shrug*

So, below ground, in the tube station, the only phones I could find were the bank of 14 mentioned previously, and even these are not at the GPs points (as far as I could tell) They were maybe 30 or 40 meters away. It seemed to me that the GPS point was directing us to the opposite side of the big ticket hall there. Anyway, I waited, and Flidget showed up, so there were two of us to man 14 phones in the busiest place in the country - yeh right! I managed to look imposing enough to stop anyone from using phones 1 and 2, (I've no idea how I managed that, I just did!) but neither of them rang. If Melissa had been even 30 seconds late, and she was trying to call phone 2, then it wouldn't have come through because someone jumped on that phone. Seriously, it was chaos, people constantly coming up to the bank and leaving again. One minute there could be no-one on there, and then literally 20 seconds later more than half the phones could be taken, I kid you not. as a result of such a fluid situation, I really can't say with any certainty which phones were occupied at Axon time and which weren't, except for the two I was standing in front of, which were definitely unoccupied at Axon time.

Sorry it didn't get enhottenated, but we did our best. I've officially given up now, and someone else can do it, or no-one else for all I care, if the PMs want us to get that wav file they wouldn't have put it in such a STUPID location.

So one way or another, we are down to just checking two phones, the fourth and sixth from the right.

Hm, I thought they were pretty dead on it. If you go in the Underground entrance next to north regent street, you get a pretty straight shot in and the distance covered to the phones is about the same as the distance covered to the centre of the intersection (note that the pedestrian triangle is notwhere the GPS coordinates point to exactly).

Anyway, let's get these last two phones done with and just leave it after that.

Phones with screens???

We don't have phones with screens on them... that is cool. Right now I bet you'd trade the screens for a heatable axon though...

Sorry London...I wish Melissa had slightly better aim.

Good luck tomorrow!
