Question: How to begin?

Hi!

I've been peeking at ilovebees.com on and off since I read about the url flashing in the Halo2 trailer, but only this week did I learn that it's an ARG.

I'm completely new to the genre; how would someone approach ilovebees.com with no prior ARG experience?

Thanks!

Well, you could go about it the same way I did: Total Immersion (warning: this WILL lead to the great annoyance of family and friends).

Or, you could keep an eye on the posts here, or be at one of the axons at the right time on Tuesday. These axons for Tuesday, are also listed on www.ilovebees.com/recipe4.html. Just to let you know, the times listed are in PDT, or basic California time. That's one hour later for Mountain, two later for Central, etc... So be sure to get the time right, or the payphone will never ring.

Be sure to know the answer to her Question of the day, and don't be shy if you get a live call. Check out this link to see what to do in that event.

Other than that, just enjoy yourself, and don't let yourself get overwhelmed! (that's really easy, especially on Tuesdays...)

People are gonna throw a LOT of URLs your way:
Quickstart FAQ (rather dated)

Rowan's Guide (a timeline and archive of the progression)

Future Axons (a Flash-based topographic map)

ModBlog (moderated log with update summaries and more links in the sidebar)

etc.

It all depends on what you want to do with the game. Do you want to answer phones? Then look up your personal longitude/latitude coordinates and find the axons (payphones) nearest you. Do you want to immerse in the story? Then visit one of the Wiki pages with character summaries.

And it depends on how you best process information. Do you like extensive background reading? Then visit theBruce for all of the text generated by the game. Do you prefer a tutorial conversation? Then find your way to the chat room, where people can answer your questions 1-on-1 in real time.

Welcome!

Also, as far as story goes, you can sit down and listen to all the assembled wav files. Sit back and get a coffee, though, as it'll take up at least an hour at this point, heh.

This will get you caught up on the Janissary James, Jersey/Durga, Kamal/Sophia, Rani and Herzog plotlines.

I don't know where there's a narrative of the Milissa/Sleeping Princess/Pious Flea stuff, off the top of my head. Anyone?

thebruce's website has a full-text timeline amongst other things. It also has full transcripts for the Axon plot, which I find are very useful as sometimes the soundfiles can be a little tricky to hear.

I think the Fireflies Wiki will also have a narrative, it's probably best to browse that site yourself, though it does have a useful Story So Far that summarises everything very neatly, but in doing so gives you hundreds more links that you may want to follow. Beware, and take a piece of string so you can find your way back out afterwards! So, good luck and Welcome!

Thanks for all the responses! I gather that living outside the US (and UK) makes it kinda difficult to play this particular ARG Razz

I'd listened to 90% of the files before coming here, actually...they intrigued me. I guess I'll have to be happy with that for now. Shocked

well, if you can't light up axons, you CAN solve puzzles...

in about 20 minutes, the site (if history serves as a good example) will be updated with NEW imbeded image puzzles...and the BeekKeeper irc channel will be buzzing with activity. Head on over, and lend a hand! ^__^
