I emailed Private yesterday:
"Hello Sir or Madam,
I could not help but notice that the dots of the spiral were only half filled in, which reminded me of the phases of the moon represented on a calendar. I wish you all the best, and if you need it, I am here to help.
Sincerely,
lighter o'reilly"

They responded: Dear Lighter,

What a wonderful observation! This had not crossed my mind. It sounds like you have a great deal of information about the moon. I'm sure your expertise will be quite helpful as we move forward.

Thank you for writing to me and offering your help.

Private

You're right about the dots

Wow, now that I look at the dots again, what you said about relation to the moon totally makes sense. It looks like less than half of the left side is hidden on every dot and the only two days on the Upcoming Events calender that appear to be the same as the dots is right around the 14th of both months, which includes Valentines day and is marked with a red x.

Those Xs have got to mean something.

Hello again. I should probably just sign up for an account.
(I'll get to that later)
Just popped over to Peg's blog, you'll notice that she says "thats not all for today folks!"

She'll probably post another entry around 9 PM, when she opens Fred's basket. That'd be 8 CST I suppose.

wow taking off with a quickness. I agree there should be another post coming up. Also I'm pretty sure the X,s are just marking the days for the book club.

Interesting

Yeah, Peg's post today has really peaked my interest.

Yeah, the Xs might just be book club days, but then I wonder why it was on valentines day, when that wasn't a Friday...

Edit:

Just sayin', I also noticed that today's post has some more bizarre spacing...

at 100% zoom the word "One" is spaced apart,

and a little zoomed out at 83% the following lines were spaced apart:

guys.
not
flippin' mind.

... Suggestion: Steno all of the pictures...

Look at the mysnowman picture... It just looks... messed up a bit.... The hues don't look real... Something's up....

There's a reason she's giving us extra links to the pictures... Anyone got steno programs?

I don't think anyone has brought this up yet, but the February full moon is mostly known as the "Snow Moon". Some Native American tribes, call it the "Hunger Moon". The March full moon is called the "Worm Moon". I hope that's not whats coming. I hate worms. Laughing * Unless of course, they're "book worms".

Re: Book Code

OCTAF1SH wrote:
The code Private lists as on the Lady of the Lake book is a dewey decimal code a system libraries use to catalogue books. just checking now to see if it's universal.

DDC - Dewey Decimal Code
820 - English/Old English Lit.
SCO - ?scott? the author?

cannot find any DDC with letters in, even the original proposition for the system, dated 1879 (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12513/12513-h/12513-h.htm) doesn't suggest abbreviating author's names as a final section to the catalogue. could be significant, could be a peculiarity of the ST library.
There is, however, usually some sub classification of catagories, ie not 820, but 821 - English poetry, or 822 English Drama. and then another 3 digit number referring to the subject matter, so the code Private gives is not complete in the classic usage of the DDC system.

There are no letters in the DDC itself, but some (most?) libraries will use letters as an add-on to ease retrieval. Usually, when it comes to fiction it's the three first letters from the author's last name (which would be consistent with Walter Scott).
I don't know how things work in stateside libraries, but in Norwegian libraries fiction isn't usually catalogued within the DDC - most libraries classify by author's name and sometime reader level (adult, teen fiction etc), but I have worked in a library where DDC was used for fiction.
The lack of specificity doesn't have to be significant. It could be explained by the size of the collection of the Snow Town library. I'm assuming that the collection is quite small (being a small town library), so maybe they didn't see the need to specify further.

I'm sorry that I can't be of any help with this, I'm wondering though, what's a steno program?

jotadinero: A steno. program is something you can use to encode/decode steganography pictures, ie pics with a hidden message encoded in them.

as far as I can see, none of Peg's pics have anything in them, though it's the first time I've used iSteg, and I've not exhausted all the possible(/desperate attempts at) passwords!

Also, I've just had a reply from Ruthie to my book request:

Hi Ruthie,

Sorry to put in this request over email, with current inclement weather, I thought I would check with you rather than come down and be disappointed.

Does the library carry a copy of 'The Lady of the Lake', by Sir Walter Scott? If so, is it available, I would very much like to read it.

many thanks, and apologies for the bizarre means of making this request!

Dear Will,

Any ideas of a specific book to request? anybody received a reading list from the book club?

*ETA the quote about honesty Ruthie signs off with is attributed to Thomas Jefferson...

You should request the Lord of the Flies, its the book that the reading club is currently reading.

I had thought of that, but feared it may be too obvious (or really not matter, couldn't be sure!) Just didn't want to have missed a howler somewhere along the way!

Have sent the following in reply:

Quote:
Ruthie,

Thank you so much for your reply.

It is a real shame about The Lady of the Lake, could you inform me when it is returned and becomes available, as I have been wanting to read it for ages. In the meantime, maybe if you have a copy of William Golding's Lord of the Flies, I could read along with the book club. After all, in the words of Jefferson (again!) I cannot live without books! I am afraid my well thumbed copy has been misplaced in the move to Snow Town!

Thanks again

Got a reply from Ruthie.

Hi! My name is Neil and I'm doing an assignment about Louise Hoskins for school. My research lead me to the Snow Town Library website and I figured as head librarian and Lousie's great grand-niece, you would be able to help me! Would you be able to provide me with some bibliographical information on Louise? It would be a great help to me! I'm really eager to learn about such a fascinating woman. I'm so impressed that she fought to prevent the censorship of books in Snow Town!
Thanks in advance!

Dear Neil,

The Snow Town Library is more than happy to assist you with your research. Education is very important to us. I suggest you put together a series of questions about my dear Aunt Louise and send them along. We will do our best to provide you with enough information to make your assignment a success.

I'm going to work on what questions I will reply with. Any suggestions for what I should ask her? This could well be our best chance to get information on Louise Hoskins out of her. Bear in mind that we can't afford to arouse her suspicions with these questions.
