Malevolentneon, if we are serious about not raising suspicions, perhaps we should start with suitably benign and schoolish questions first, slipping in the odd pointed one. maybe some benign ones could be:

how old was louise when she became librarian?
what is known of her life outside the library?
in what way did she fight the censors?

some not so subtle:
was LH's passion for literature limited to reading that of others, or did she herself write?
did she have family?
was she mental and how did she die?!!

ok, maybe not the last one, but i think you're right, this is our opportunity to find out as much as we can. Shame my brain has shut down for the night! i'm sure others will come up with more questions for ruthie

was just rereading the thread, and noticed something which doesn't sit right, in an email to malevolentneon, private says the library vault is a very guarded place with only a select few allowed in:

Your assumptions about the Snow Town Library vault are correct. There are very few people that have access to this vault. It has always been well guarded. I know Ruthie has a list, but I do not know where she keeps it. This list seems very important to her and to Charles Gulliffer.

and yet, in an email to amandel, she said:

I'm probably reading into it too much, as i'm tired, but can't stop looking around at the same pages, but the inconsistancy that private is allowed in, without feeling accepted in the ST community is bugging me for some reason....anyway, must sleep, will leave you guys to discover what's in fred's basket!

Louise Hoskins

Got a reply from Ruthie today. I wrote:

Quote:
Dear Ruthie,

I am interested in making a documentary about your Great Aunt Louise Hoskins. I understand she was a strong character who made significant advances in literacy in rural Maine through her work as Head Librarian, and I'm particularly interested in her moral victories when defending the catalogue from censorship. I have also heard she was herself quite a fine poet. While I can certainly garner much from public records to her professional life, all good documentaries charter also the personal life, and as such I would love to know more that I can only get from you.

Where was she born? When, and how, did she die? Did she marry or have children? Did she have a favourite book, or love them equally as you do? Does she have any poems, stories, letters, or a diary that I might examine?

Please fill me in on anything you can share about this magnificent lady.

Her response:
Quote:
Dear Luci,

I am quite moved by your interest in my Aunt Louise. A documentary is an excellent way to honor her life and her work. She most certainly defended Snow Town Library's collection of books and periodicals several times. Guided by their ignorance, Snow Town citizens once attempted to keep The Dial Magazine out of the Snow Town Library. Although devoted to politics and literature in the late 1800's, some citizens continued to claim the magazine was associated with the devil. Aunt Louise admired Francis Fisher Browne's dedication to quality design and content. She fought hard and eventually the opposition backed down.

Aunt Louise was born in 1859 and died in 1911. She was never married, but was much loved by her many nieces and nephews. I am certain she could never select a favorite book. May I ask why you suggest that Aunt Louise is a poet? She was known to adore poetry, but never a poet. Unfortunately, there are no personal documents I can share with you.

It is a joy to open the door to Aunt Louise for you.

Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.

As she always signs off with that Honesty quote from Jefferson, I think it must be important - must be part of a puzzle.

She obviously hasn't read the poem herself (unless she's lying).

They are coming home

I decided to take the appraoch of a new resident strangely drawn to snow town "They are coming home" and wrote ruthie the follow email. I will see if I get a reply.

Quote:
Ruthie,

I am so excited to see the library's new website. What a wonderful way to communicate with like minded people. I have recently found myself drawn to Snow Town from Illinois. It is too easy to lose who you really are in a big city, coming to Snow Town is like coming Home. I was wondering if you had any advice or guidance for new residents, or could help me get in touch with the Proper people. I very much would like to meet more of my Snow Town Family.

Heya! I just started playing this ARG today, and I'm a bit confused as to how you start playing....

I've read the snowtownlibrary.org website, and I've sent an e-mail to the librarian requesting a book... I haven't gotten a response yet or anything.

How do I get started?

Post a message on the snowtownlibrary.com guestbook, a quick hello.
You could also try contacting Ruthie.
Also, check out snowtown.me, one of the characters blogs.

Speaking of snowtown.me, apparently Peg is going by 9 o' clock CST time. Not the EST, (the time zone in Maine)
Interesting.

Thanks, Jotadinero! I appreciate the help!

I've looked over the Snow Town blog and sent an e-mail to Ruthie requesting a book, but I haven't actually gotten a reply about the overdue book yet... maybe I should just skip ahead? Or maybe not.

What about the 2003 New York Times article reference on the .howl page? Has anyone found any clues related to that yet?

You're welcome Smile

I believe the overdue notice was only sent to one person. Could someone back me up on this? I'm not sure.
As for the New York Times reference, that was just the PM breaking the 4th wall (or pulling back the curtain <--- I think thats the right term) They were making a reference to an article about ARGs, therefore stating that Snowtown is an ARG.

I'd suggest you read through the thread to catch up on where we're at, and you'll start to get a feel for how you can help out. When you email Ruth, try to ask something that will give us more information that we haven't achieved yet. I'm not sure myself of what further question to ask, but if we all take different angles sooner or later we'll end up in the right direction.

Welcome to the game Smile

Fred's basket is now open.
Its full of papers. Wonder what they say?

EDIT: 2 of the visible words are Alas and Pany
I googled this and found Shakespeare's Othello:

This would certainly go with the literature theme.

I did the same thing, but on closer inspection, reading the actual text of Othello, I'm pretty sure the 'pany' is due to the layout - it should read 'company' rather than 'com' (next line) 'pany.'

Perhaps the scraps of paper have partial words - only four letters each. could be in code

Here's hoping Fred just split his words up. xD

If not, then I suppose that trail has gone cold.

papers

notice the symbols on the paper. they should be some indicator of the word order. Hoping we get to see them all.

Welcome to unFiction Zobot257! As luci said the easiest way to catch up on the game, is read through this thread first. You'll find what's already been discovered and discussed. For example, on the first page of this thread is a post with a link to the New York Times 2003 article.

I'm more inclined to think, this was Private Person's way of explaining how she found ARGN and unFiction, as well as Jane Doh.
