I looked up the book in question, and there was one thing I noticed, a line about one of the plots of the book being "a war between the lowland Scots (led by James V) and the highland clans (led by Roderick Dhu of Clan Alpine)". I might be sleep deprived, but maybe this has to do with the people originally from the town and the newcomers?

You may well be right on a metaphorical /thematic level.

Here's an earlier post about Lady of the Lake http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=809707#809707
The full poem is very long, and I don't get poetry, so the story isn't the easiest to follow.

Only related name I can see is that King James went undercover pretending to be "Knight of Snowdoun."

Founding families of Snow Town are Harmon and Hoskins

Thanks for joining us Smile

Below is all three different pigpen ciphers from Purple Hell. Obviously none of them make sense, so I guess they also need decoding. I'll try to add scans of the song tomorrow.

Gosh I'm glad you're on it enaxor - I didn't realise there were 3 different types of pigpen, have been fiddling with just the one.

Coffee Neither of the 2 Pigpen ciphers at Rumkin gives a solve for Greensleeves' first line. Ruthie has "decided to create a virtual version" of the book club on the Home Page soon & a reply to my asking "Private" about the Historical Society's visit:

Yes, I will be in attendance on Tuesday evening. I will not be entering the vault, but I will be watching the desk.

Bloody hell....

I knew the box was being opened at 3am uk time, and i knew a fair amount would happen while I was asleep, but solving that pigpen was done quickly!! well done enaxir!

just to eliminate what I'm sure others have tried and not documented, but the ROT tool on unfiction.com didn't come up with anything for the 3 pigpen codes posted earlier. I'm not familiar (yet) with pigpen cyphers, so I may be missing the point even in trying it, but thought I would give it a go. Maybe the number of letters in each line should have told me that, all being 7/8 letters long, but thought I'd try anyway.

will keep looking all the while my work allows...

This seems to be strong evidence that Private is Molly Harmon.

Molly was my primary suspect from the start. But to be honest, that's mostly because she's one of few people we know who work in the library at this point.

Didn't private person say the harmons were a founding family? And yet private claims to be an out of towner? Although it's hardly compelling considering his/her inconsistencies in some of the info we have been provided with...

In the guest book, Molly Harmon referred to another of the Harmon family as her "brother-in-law". I forget his name specifically, but it's entirely possible that Molly married into the Harmon family and took her husband's last name. Without further investigation we have no way of knowing if that's the case or not, though.

Someone should e-mail Ruthie about that. Ask her if the Library is hiring new people or something, and casually inquire about if Molly's brother in law works there frequently or something. Ruthie might be a good source of information on the family of her fellow librarian.

Anyway... I wrote out an e-mail to Peg on the Snow Town Blog today and got an automated response about as quickly as I sent the mail. So now I've got Peg's e-mail address! I'm operating under the pretense of writing a report about Snow Town for school. What I got sent back clearly wasn't an answer to my question, but it WAS pretty interesting.

I'm out of time, though, so I'll post it up here later. I'm also choosing not to post Peg's e-mail address just yet, so that she's not bombarded with E-mails now. Although if you read her blog it's not hard to guess what her e-mail addy is anyway.

See you later! Keep watching the skies! Er, the snow.

beg your pardon, you're absolutely right, can't believe i missed that, apologies!

I'm currently playing with greensleeves/pigpen cypher, trying to make some sense of it, but need to go out, so will resume my work shortly.....

I'm previously unfamiliar with pigpen cyphers. Am I right in thinking there are 2/3 widely accepted arrangements of letters in the grids, or is there a chance the alphabet is randomly assigned throughout the grids?

Am currently working through using the slips of paper in different orders, but will have to get back to it in an hour or so.

Also, has anyone had any joy with the steganalysis of peg's pictures? Unless there is a password we don't already have, I'm sure all the .jpg pics hold nothing, but the most promising pics are.png files and my software doesn't understand them....anyone else tried?

Mound of Snow

In case not everyone knows yet, Peg uploaded a video of a mound of snow that Fred wants her to stay far away from.

I think we should encourage her to dig it up. Very Happy

And also, because it's a video, we now know Peg's youtube account.

I recommend that everyone subscribes.

Two posters on Peg's blog cracked the Picpen cipher awhile ago. Mega props go to Denny Jacobs and Guest User17:

ENTER THE PATH NORTH OF SNOW TOWN MEETING HALL. YOU WILL FIND ME NEAR THE EDGE OF THE LAKE SIX DAYS AFTER THE FULL MOON

Automated Message

I sent an email to Peg and I think I got an automated message back or something... In case anyone wants it:

Quote:
Hey there!

Nice to hear from you! I think. Smile Just kidding! You might be the first person to email me here at my new-ish blog.

Thank you and Welcome to Snow Town!

More than likely I'm outside playing in the snow. Eventually I will get back to my computer and to you. Until then...

That's all for today folks!

Peg

And also, about that secret message, do you guys think this is Fred who wants to meet Peg or would it be "something else" that made Fred cipher that? We should also find out from Peg if Fred knows anything about ciphers for him to be able to conciously write that.

 Further down the rabbit hole...
Curiousier and Curiousier

So THAT'S what the cypher was saying.... so who was Fred hiding the message from? I sense more than one faction in Snow Town.... maybe someone should tell Private about this! It may be important to his/her investigation. I will do it tonight if no one else speaks up... I think Private should know.

Also.... I got a creepy message about the snow today! Maybe it's related? I dunno yet... but I am at work so I can't post it yet. I will tonight.

Assuming slenderman doesn't eat me again. Thatwas just unnervng last time.

I recently tried to contact Peg by posting a comment requesting her to email me, or to give me her email, or something like that.

I'll let you guys know what her address is if I get it.

It seems like you all missed her address. On the homepage, it says "You can reach me at PegSPLATsnowtown.me"
or something along those lines
