Mission Statement

The Snow Town Library provides multiple opportunities for people of all ages to have access to written, visual and audio resources in a welcoming, learning environment.

pretty sure this has always been there, but the suggestion of requesting something, then invoking the CoC isn't a bad plan. The code must be there for a reason (esp. since if you search, no such national code existed until the 1990s)

But what do we ask for??

Dear Luci,

I am sending your Electronic Mail to Edward Harmon. The Library Vault is actually watched over and cared for by the Historical Society. It is only called the Library Vault due to the fact that it is in the Library's basement. I am a small cog in the large Historical Society wheel. Of course, my daily presence at the library often makes me the gatekeeper, but, ultimately, it does not fall under my jurisdiction. You should know the items in the Vault are not the property of the Snow Town Library. They are the property of the Snow Town Historical Society.

If there is something in the Library you would like to reserve, I would be happy to help you.

A crowd is gathering in the main room. I must go to deliver my announcement.

I MUST KNOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

ps I finally found time to see what all this Snow Town business is about. Looks awesome! A Maine-themed ARG! \o/

Also I'll let you know if my email correspondence with Ruthie gives up anything.

Dear Melinda,

I have two book suggestions for you. The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis is quite wonderful. The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe is another that comes to mind.

Did you hear the news? The Snow People have returned to Snow Town!

I think this is my shot at getting us some info about the Snow People. How do I go about it? I have an idea, like saying "That's great! When was the last time they were there? I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with your town. What are they like, and was the town named after them?"

That sound good? Sorry, I'm just excited!

And an update on Peg's blog. In the bucket was a cassette tape labeled "The Magician". Peg is going to tell us what's on it tomorrow. AGH, can't wait! Very Happy

ETA:
Also. Does anyone besides me find creepy the fact that everyone becomes totally enamored of the Snow People once they go out and look at them for a while?

He seemed happy about it, so I jumped on the band wagon. I mean, a lot of people in town are really, really psyched that these little guys showed up. So, I went around and took pictures of them and soon I was feeling really happy about em too.

EDIT: Also, Yay, Kona!

Something I just thought of!

The strange spaces in Peg's blog entries..

The spaced letters don't seem to remind me of any sort of code or anything, but what it DID remind me of old ASCII pictures.

You know, like

[]
==[]=====>
[]

(Argh that's really shitty sorry)

Looks like a sword or something?

Has anyone tried to play around with the different blog posts positioned next to each other in different ways and seeing if the white spaces make some sort of image?

Someone has suggested before (sorry, can't remember who, I'm too lazy to click back) that those spaces are a formatting issue, and I'm inclined to think that's so. It looks to me like the entries are being c/p-ed from a document into the blog editor, which may cause the spacing issues. There might be a message in there somewhere, but I'm kind of leaning toward the idea that it's just formatting.

We do have to consider everything, though, just in case. Wink

I also thought of that, that the spaces were supposed to make the text into secret messages or something (sorta like "read the first word in each line down")... but it doesn't make anything coherent, so I'm gonna go with October.

ETA: Just got a response from Ruthie.

Hello Ruthie,

I don't know if you've seen, but I am Dav Flamerock; I recently posted in the guestbook with a suggestion for the book club ("Dagon," by HP Lovecraft) which was added to the webpage. If you haven't already seen it, I also live in Maine, though I live south of you off the Kennebec River. It's nice to get a glimpse of Maine outside of my little town (I'm not actually from here)! Anyway, I would like to join the book club and I was curious who your webmaster was. I've never seen a library whose webmaster and curator is the same person (hence the assumption here) and I had a few questions for him or her, so I wanted to know if you could give me his/her name or email address.

Look forward to the virtual book club that'll happen in the future!

Dear Dav,

Welcome to the Snow Town Library! I'm not sure if you have heard, but today was a very special day in Snow Town. The Snow People returned to our village! It is an exciting and magical time!

Thank you for your interest in our Snow Town Library website. We have all worked on the website together. Molly even took an Adult Education Class on website building. The real brains and talent behind our team is Edward Harmon. He's our coach. If we have any technical problems, he solves them.

I was thinking I'd ask her about the circle page, on the hope that she doesn't solve the puzzle and find the HOWL page. That way I could see if I could get in contact with Edward. Is there any better way we know of getting in touch with him?

Some thoughts:
1. Private was definitely terrified about the "they" that was "coming" but now is all "Yay, Snow People! I was so silly to be scared!" Weird. :/
2. The Cassette Tape is labeled "The Magician", and Ruthie says that the Snow People will bring "a magical time". So, probably literally "magical"?

Are the Snow People doing something to make people like them and think that they are good?

the townspeople are definitely changing their collective minds about the snow people, but none are really saying why. How can so many people who were terrified before suddenly be excited and happy in such a short amount of time with no real reason?

It's pretty obvious that the Snow People are having some sort of effect on the residents of Snow Town, like a glamour to make them believe that their coming is a good thing. Given how terrified Private was before, it simply doesn't make sense for her to suddenly be happy at the arrival of creepy snowmen.

The only question is, where does this leave us? I doubt Private is going to be inclined to continue investigating; they seem to be under the spell of the Snow People. Unless we can somehow convince them that this is a bad thing?

On the other hand, we have Peg. She seems to be affected too, yet she has that tape. Which means she may still be able to look more deeply into this. Perhaps the message on the tape will convince her that the Snow People are bad?

I'm not sure there's much we can do in the meantime until Peg plays that tape, beyond contacting Private and trying to make them see sense. Any thoughts?

Peg's blog & The Magician

I haven't worked it out yet either, but I think there's something going on on Peg's blog we haven't worked out:
- weird spacing, which could be an editor issue, but then why isn't it a consistent issue? The spacing is weird in some bits but fine in others, even within the same post.
- bolded words, again inconsistent such as today's has "Snow People" bolded in one part, but then she doesn't bother bolding the same words elsewhere http://www.snowtown.me/?p=291
- also inconsistent use of CAPS.

I've been keeping track of it, but haven't conclusively cracked anything yet so not posted here. SNOWMAGGEDON was posted repeatedly in one post, and it is an anagram of Dodge Snowman. NOT BLOW was in another post, which is an anagram of Bolt Now. Snow Town anagrams to Owns Town. However, as there are plenty of other posts that don't make much sense, the above examples could just be coincidence (you plug words into an anagram decoder and you can get hundreds of nonsense outputs, bit like reading tea leaves, you see what you want).

I was looking at Peg's post today, copied and pasted into word in a more spread out format, and as I was reading it my mind started inserting words into the blank spaces as if an extra word could almost have been left out, and this might be the message we need to get - but I haven't pursued it properly yet and it might just be my mind playing tricks.

Just to give you an example of what I mean, if the sentence had a _______ where the blank is for you to guess the missing word (like in hangman or guessing competitions), what would you fill those blanks with?

Anyway, I'm about to go out to dinner so can't look into this more now, but if you think it's worth looking at, give it a shot.

On "The Magician" reference - this could have to do with the tarot card http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magician_(Tarot_card), or be a reference to an illusionist, a tricky/deceptive person, or someone with magical powers.
