SOLVE: Mute smilies

If you print (or print preview) the smilies, you end up will dots and fractions (see the screen cap in another thread: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1141 ).

There are seven "dot patterns" and 4 fractions. In combination, that is 28 possible symbol combos. I calculated the frequency of each combo and started trying letters based on that.... and look what I found:
Code:
I have put the little bird back in his cage. It is for his own good, but not for yours. He will be hidden there in that doctored state; kept thus by the misguided men who seek to treat his alleged condition.

Man has attempted to hide from the eyes of God since Adam wore leaves. Psychiatry seems elabourate syntheses of plant essences to allow man to better hide himself away within.

Speech returns so slowly. It frustrates to go unheard and uncomprehended. I crave an introduction before unleashing the dogs of war. I must know where my dawg sat (to use the colloquial). That is to say, he must remain caged until sufficient forces have gathered for the fight. The longer this goes on, the worse for all. I have tipped my hand and now she has time to marshall forces of her own.

Some of the spellings are a little strange. Don't know where that leads us.

I'm of to bed now.

PS... if you count the circles as 0 and dots as 1, and the groups as binary numbers; then the seven numbers are 1,3,5,7,12,15,31.
The alphabet is encoded like this:
Code:
    12 31  1  5  3  7 15
1/1        z  y  x  w  v
1/2  u  t  s  r  q  p  o
1/4  n  m  l  k  j  i  h
1/8  g  f  e  d  c  b  a

I am also impressed.
So, the next question... since the dots were represented by "one"s and "zero"s in the html, does that mean the 26 smileys are a red herring or another code.

They went ahead and ordered the smileys for us, how convenient.
not to mention the "id"s which look random. the id's are definitely in alphabetical order.

if it ends up being a straight substitution, smily for a letter, then this message is 5 times as long as that one.

I'm leaning towards red-herring.
If I did the substitution right in my text-editor... the frequencies of the smileys is pretty flat.... 118 of one, 123 of another, etc.
All 26 smileys used about the same number of times.
