New Member Thoughts.

First time player and poster here. Smile I'm also curious about the General Store as the bells stopped there. I wonder if we can find out who else is buried in the Bone Yard. I posted a question to Peg regarding the location of the spot where the first settlers encountered the Snow People. Someone needs to get into The Vault. I don't know if that less or more dangerous than sending Peg past the Boneyard. We don't want to put her in any danger.

Received this email from Peg earlier (this was the soonest I could post it):

Quote:
Hi there Luci, I have read your email at least 20 times. The idea that
Fred, my husband, is a part of something secret and maybe those old slates
makes me physically sick. I just can't imagine he's kept this from me.
Do you think he knows about all this stuff? I can't even remember the
last time Fred went to the library without me. He's not on any boards or
committees in town. We really keep to ourselves. As I've been telling
other concerned friends, I'm just going to let this all sink in tonight
and face it in the morning. The only way I can think of to get to the
Magician is his damn bucket. We could try to leave him a note I guess. I
could put it back where he left the cassette for me. I sound like a crazy
person. Yep. I'm heading down to the lake to leave a note in bucket for
a Magician. All this, the slate stuff, the Magician and now the L.H. note
about spirals and Natasha Triplet. Crazy! A train could hit me right now
and I wouldn't even feel it. Oh and Ruthie was not only seen last night
with her three guys, but Julie down at the General Store said she was down
there today with them having coffee in the back. My Snow Town world is
upside down.

What the PMs are telling us:

1. Come up with something to ask Magician
2. Find out about goddamn Julie already

My Dear Friend,

I have but a few minutes as Jeziah Harmon will call upon me before the sunsets. The weather is a good deal milder today. The Snow People seem to prosper even under the warmth of the bright sun. I continue to visit them daily and see little change in their sweet cherub shape. My belief gains strength each day. A magical spell has been cast over Snow Town. Suddenly the awakened sleeper embraces the day. As Citizens of Snow Town we abide to the Snow People Decree. As founders it is our duty to carry out the custons of our forefathers and foremothers.

William Haynes has been difficult to convince. Jeziah and I spent last evening and morning with him. He has at last agreed to enter the lower spiral tonight. We will follow the directions of Job's slate. I have never walked beyond the Bone Orchard. I am quite anxious but take comfot knowing I am not the first Hoskins to take the journey.

L. H.

I was going to guess that L.H.'s "Dear Friend" was Natasha, but then I realised that Natasha would have just been a two year old when L.H went missing.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Which raises the question - why would LH code NHT initials on her note? She wouldn't - so this coded message must be from someone more recent who had access to the book and is pointing us towards Natasha. The Magician?

However the point towards NHT is not necessarily saying that NHT is the good person, she could be the person we have to watch out for. My gut feeling says that's not the case - but we don't know allie from enemy yet.

There's question remains, who is "My Dear Friend", for don't we normally write to people by name?

"My Dear Friend" is probably just addressing whoever finds the notes.

Though if you look at those crosses... I can't profess to know how they were marked on the paper but they're uniform and certainly not handwritten. That means LH most likely didn't mark the pieces of paper at all, and this is probably another message from Magician. It's where his brief line of puzzles has led us after all. Come to think of it, there's no proof that LH was really the one to write any of the pieces of paper we're attributing to her...

New blog post, looks like Lawrence is going to become a new source of information for Peg, and us.

Agree it's really hard to be certain who to trust atm 'tho my take is that NHT is the signature initials of the person who made the "x' code message after getting Louise's letter and then slipped it in the book for an unknown reason.

I think its time for a suitor recap!

We know that Ruthie has three suitors vying for her attention just like the Lady of the Lake (from this post on Peg's blog)

Ruthie's suitors ** with correction
- Tom Haynes (Ruthie left him a poem on the guestbook. Her true love?)
- Gordon Triplet (already married, or some other trouble)
- Paul Harmon (Fred's brother. Not married to Molly - that's Lawrence)

Ellen Douglass (Lady of the Lake) suitors
- Malcolm Graeme, a young highland chief and former courtier of King James, loved by Ellen
- James Fitz-James, the Knight of Snowdoun, King James V of Scotland travelling incognito
- Roderick Dhu, the chief of Clan Alpine, outlawed after committing a cold-blooded homicide at the Scottish court

And we know from Edward's drunk confession that Louise Hoskins also had three suitors.
- William Haynes. (Claire's great Uncle. "William and Louise fell deeply in love the week the Snow People came to Snow Town")
- Jeziah ?
- ??

I'm going to ask Peg to ask NHT about William and Jeziah. Perhaps we should try to prod Edward for more info as well.

A very good theory. We'll have to wait and see what Peg gets out of Natasha today. I have a feeling we're making steady progress. I just hope today's puzzle, if there is one, doesn't get revealed and solved immediately while I sleep.

Hi all, Just catching up and including the correspondance I've had.
I don't think there is anything important within though.

I am so happy to hear about another Snow Town citizen abiding by the Snow People's Decree. It is our duty! Imbibe, love and laugh!

It is also nice to have someone so genuinely interested in the Snow People. I was not familiar with the story you mentioned. After doing a little research, I can see a clear connection. When the Snow People first arrived in Snow Town, back in 1711, the first settlers were terribly frightened. The three families; Hoskins, Haynes and Harmons, came to the area, we know as Snow Town, to escape the violence of the settlements closer the coast. The warring between the French, British and Native Americans was fierce. These three families found there way to a safe clearing along the edge of Lake Williwaw in the summer of 1710. The first few months were difficult, but the families were able to live without the threat of violence. As winter came, the families could see smoke on the opposite side of the lake. Someone was nearby and their days and nights were soon full of dread. They took turns keeping watch and hoping the deep snow would keep any invader away. On a winter's New Moon a deep darkness wrapped around Snow Town. The three families huddled together. They could hear the snow crunch as the invaders marched closer and closer. It was only a matter of time before they met their fate. Suddenly, the wind shifted and blew from the lake like a mighty lion. The snow began to fall harder and harder. The Hoskins, Haynes and Harmons held tight to each other and prayed. Daybreak came and they had survived. All was well. The men set out to search for any evidence of their unwanted nighttime visitors and discovered a single Snow Person nearby.

Repeating this story overwhelms me. I must return to my tea.

We knew this already from the update though :/ Stupid courses keeping me AFK this weekend.

I would hardly say I rate as the "grand poobah" of the Snow Town Historical Society. I am only Ambassador Level. Ambassador Level is a fancy way to say "Host". I host the fundraisers and take care of public relations. I am not really a part of the official "Society". It takes years to enter into the upper levels. Some of the high level members are in their 90's and one is over 100.

We have had many people writing to the Historical Society about Louise Hoskins lately. I'm not sure I can add to the information posted on the Snow Town Library site. Do you have a specific question about her? I'd be happy to dig around for you.

Sincerely,

Edward Harmon

"Hello Peg,
Wow. You are certainly going through it right now. In the note you
found, the underlined words spell out "We must stop the snow people."
Perhaps you can drop a note in the bucket asking the Magician how to stop
the snow people?...
And, maybe everyone oughta dry-out for a few days. That much booze
flowing, in wintry conditions, spells trouble!
Stay Safe,
-tommy"
"Hi there Tommy!

I'm with you about the booze. Walked by Edward's on my daily
constitutional and I swear they are still partying. Edward waved to me
from his front window. I could tell he was smashed out of his gourd!

I will put a note in the bucket and tie it to the tree where I found it.
Can't think of any other way we can reach Mr. Magician. I will definitely
ask him how to stop the Snow People for you. I want to know what we're
stopping them from doing. When I look around town I don't see them doing
anything bad. The little Snow People are just standing there, while half
the town is drunk and running around doing their loving and laughing
stuff, but that's it. I don't believe he told us everything he knows.
Mr. Magician may not know all the secrets of Snow Town but he said in his
message the Snow People "have a serious and dark history". Then he went
on to tell us about the families coming here and being scared. He didn't
tell us what happened to the families after the Snow People arrived.

Automatic Writing

Sure is a lot of automatic writing going on. Fred's notes, of course, but the Decree's preamble speaks of the "steady and sure hand" and "gifted script" of Job Harmon. I'm guessing those aren't meant as compliments for his swell penmanship. Poe dabbled, some maintain (see his peculiar short story "Angel of the Odd"), in automatic writing, although I've never seen that come up in any way in relation to The Cask of Amontillado.

On a slight tangent, The Cask is the story I've used in the past to introduce high school students to, among other things, the concept of the unreliable narrator. And we may be faced with that same problem in Peg, I'm afraid.

Looks like we're being prodded to ask certain questions. I asked some basic Snow People related questions on Peg's blog but she hasn't responded. I'm looking forward to her update later.

Everyone, don't forget that the book club meets tomorrow! Ruthie updated the Library website with more information. I found the perfect drink for imbibing as the Snow People have decreed.

I've had some more correspondence:
Quote:
Dear Ruthie,

I hope you are loving, laughing, and imbibing in great quantities with your fellow Snow Town Citizens! If you don't mind the imposition, I'm still working on the documentary, trying to piece together the other Snow Town residents who were near and dear to Louise Hoskins. I understand that late in life she had three male suitors attempting to court her, Jeziah Harmon, William Haynes, and a third? Who did Jeziah go on to marry after Louise ran off with William? Do you know who Louise's dearest friend was? Who was bequeathed Louise's belongings in the will? Would they have any of Louise's personal effects in storage that you don't know about?

I am sure Louise was quite taken with the Snow People and visited them often. Do you?

May you frolic and play,

Luci

Quote:
Dear Luci,

How do you know about Jediah Harmon, William Haynes and my dear dead Aunt Louise? Has someone in Snow Town been telling you stories? Has someone given you access to her diary? Who gave you this information?

Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.

Ruthie Randolph
Head Librarian
Snow Town Library

So L.H.'s "letter" to "My Dear Friend" must actually be a diary entry! Need to see if we can find that diary.

- William Haynes. (Claire's great Uncle. "William and Louise fell deeply in love the week the Snow People came to Snow Town")
- Jeziah ?
- ??

Jeziah/Jediah is a Harmon.
I think the third would be a Triplet - as Ruthie is dating one from each of these three families, and Edward said Louise got into trouble, double trouble, some would say triple trouble.

I have asked Peg to bring it up with Natasha Haynes Triplet - it might have been her grandfather!

I emailed Edward with a bunch more questions last night, still waiting his reply. I do hope he answers while imbibed.

Just got an email from Ruthie about the virtual bookclub - it has a link to the story http://xroads.virginia.edu/~hyper/POE/cask.html

Thank you for pointing that out Deweyd, I have wondered for a while 'who to believe' but hadn't been worried about Peg... until now!

Correspondence/Thoughts

I received this reply to my question on Peg's Blog. Which you've probably read. Just to collect it here if it helps.

"Hey there Peg. I was curious if anyone knows where the original settlers might have spent that snowy night in the woods.

Thanks!

Enjoy your weekend. Smile"

February 28, 2011 at 9:55 am

"Hi there Ghost!

My nephew, Lawrence, tells me the spot where the first Snow Town families settled was along Lake Williwaw. If you walk down Drift Drive to the boat launch and go to your left to the beach there, that's where it all began."

Peg

(This confirms what I thought regarding Fred's wandering. I wondered if where he stopped was at that same spot. Sorry if I'm behind on that. Smile The map wasn't pinpointing the exact spot. (Perhaps it was clear to everyone except me but I wonder if this place will come into play again later.)
.
February 9, 2011:

"Right around the time we got to the Post Office, Walter started to bark across Williwaw Pond. And that's when I spotted Fred running down Drift Drive in the direction of the Lake. Walter and I picked up our pace and hoofed it over there. By the time we got to the Lake, Fred was nowhere to be found. I called out his name for at least 10 minutes. A part of me started to think maybe he went out on the ice, but there weren't any footprints on the new snow. That's the weirdest part. We followed Fred's footprints to the edge of the Lake and then they stopped. They didn't even reverse. Nothing. Just nothing. No prints going anywhere".

There is an "X" to mark a Snow Person at that spot. Seems no one has been wandering again as of yet however...

Hope this is of some use later.

There's already a link to Poe's story for tomorrow night posted above, so I won't bother.

Drunk Edward

More Drunk Edward! Email just came through right now so it seems to me a pattern that he is drunk at this time of day in case anyone else wants to get a drunk letter, not that I want to share him Wink

Quote:
Enigmatic Edward, I hope you are well and truly imbibed as you read this, as I do so enjoy your fluid correspondence. My own heartfelt apologies for the delay in responding to your delightful email, I assure you it was not due to any cooling off of my own affections Smile I am surprised that as Ambassador to the Historical Society you don't have access to the box of slates, surely that is an oversight? How many levels are there in the Society, and who would have access to those slates? Guarded secret it may be, however there must be a tight knit group who do know it in order to protect it. As you've pointed out, there are many descendants of the original founding H's, how is it chosen who becomes the keeper of these secrets? Is it the oldest person (Natasha Haynes Triplet) who heads the Historical Society - she's the closest thing to walking history after all Wink Or is it the person who proves themselves worthy through some means of test? I'm certainly doing my best to track down the Magician, but, as you've pointed out, he is good at cloaking himself.

I find it interesting that Louise should have found three worthy suitors at her age in life, especially considering the time period, when it was normal for a woman to marry in late teens to early twenties. Is it common in Snow Town for people for people to settle at a later age? Are there many eligible single men and women? You could put that in your brochure, cash in on the romance tourism trade. Speaking of which, as it is not easy for us to date in person, I have taken it upon myself to draw up a list of questions (attached) to test our compatibility before I fly over to collect my green card, and I also need to know your date of birth so that I might test our LSM and birth sign compatibility. If all goes well, we can then progress to a GenePartner test.

I was wondering why, in a small town such as Snow Town, the graveyard is not located near the Church? Does this date back from the founding, or was it relocated in the 18th Century to minimise spread of infectious disease? Is there a reason why Clare might have left the church off the map on purpose?

Yours always (provided a match),

Luci xxx

I'm so drunk right now that I can't read all the words you wrote. I do know this is a note from you, Luci. I love you, Luci. Please move to Snow Town! I promise to protect you from the Snow People. I promise to play my piano for you. Did you know I'm a concert pianist? I am. I hardly ever play anymore. Life got in the way. I play concerts once or twice a year. Music is my great love. Did you know that about me, Luci? Do you love that about me? Isn't music the best? Isn't is beautiful? OK. I will try to read you're note. Wow! You really have so many subjects going around in your mind tonight. Hard to keep up with you. Let's see if I can answer something for you, my love. The Bone Orchard is an interesting spot. I have no idea why it is where it is. I like your answer! Ding Ding! Disease. Let's go with disease! Louise and her friends with benefits? I'm kidding, my love! You should know not all of Louise's companions were single. Get it? Married. When I'm drunk I crave french onion dip. Do you like onion dip? Onion dip. I love onion dip. OK. I'm trying to focus on your first paragraph and the only words I can make out are slates, secrets, levels, Historical Society. 3 levels. I'm the lowest, Luci. Lowest. Sorry. The top level have access to all the top secret stuff. Top level. Top secret. I'm not supposed to know about the slates. Next to playing the piano, eavesdropping is my great love too. I like to hear information I'm not supposed to hear. I would have been a good spy. Wow I am way too tired to type anymore tonight, Luci. I do love you. I am going to play a song for you someday, Luci. I promise it won't be THAT song.

I have to do some RL work right now, so I haven't written him back - please let me know if there are any questions you want me to include in my next love letter.
