A Word on Slenderblogs

So I've been reading a lot of the new Slenderblogs that have been popping up recently, and I've noticed as a trend (as I'm sure many of you have) of writers jumping the gun on bringing in Tall, Dark, and Terrifying. Hell, a lot of blogs have Him (or at least some reference to Him) in the first post. There's some debate to be had as to whether or not this is a product of bad writing, but I don't think that's necessarily the case.

Here's what I think - a lot of these new writers see stuff like MH and EMH and are inspired and want to create something as interesting, and creepy as that. But most of them don't have the time or resources to do a vlog like that, so they turn to blogging. The problem here is that what makes a good vlog isn't always makes a good blog.

Let's not kid ourselves here - we like to be scared. We get a rush off it, it's why we choose to play slenderman ARGs as opposed to other ones. And PMs want to scare us. Vlogs scare us with the visual. It's easy to make us jump and create a creepy atmosphere.

Blogs, however, lack that ability for the most part. Were not gonna jump if were reading and then it's just like "OMG I SAW SLENDERMAN". The blogs need to be scary in a different way. The writers can't make those jump moments, so in order to be creepy, they need to create a sense of unease and make it disturbing rather than startling. I'm not a huge fan of h(a)unting, but one of it's early posts really stuck with me. It was fairly short, and most of it was just trivial stuff, but it ended with "He's outside my window right now." It wasn't the appearance Slendy that freaked me out, but just the idea that someone would be sitting there blogging while Slenderman is outside, and the kind of mental state you'd have to be in to treat itso casually. Thats what we need more of - that kind of mental degradation in characters and that psychological horror.

Tl;dr: In blogs: appearance of slenderman doesn't neccesarily = creepiness and/or quality.

Anyone agree?

I agree, yet at the same time acknowledge that the Slender Man is the pull that attracts the reader's attention. If it were just some blog, it would probably be ignored until the Slender Man makes his appearance. A writer wants an audience.

Also, I think calling it the Slender Man as opposed to Slender Man is creepier. The former has an alien, and disturbing feel to it, as if that's as far as we could possibly describe it. The latter sounds like a comic character.

I agree that there is a lot of 'too soon' with the blogs in regards to the Slender Man showing up. However, I think that in some cases, the involvement of the Slender Man from the get-go is more a product of the story itself; it is very possible to begin something scary in the middle of the stalking, haunting, or hunting. Take the ARG favorite, House of Leaves, for example. The story, for all intents and purposes, begins with the main character doing a lot of mumbling about the terrible things going on around him, without a lot of foreplay.

A lot of horror stories start in the middle. Some don't even bother to explain the origin of their horror.

However, this isn't always the beginning of a good story.

To be honest, I understand this. I've got a story for something like this planned out in my head, and it's meant for filming. If I can't film it? I won't do it.

So yeah, I understand that.

I think we're at a stage in the genre where people need to start widening the horizons of it. A lot of the 'scare factor' some blogs try to pull off is just derivative, which softens the impact, particularly for those who begin with reading the big three blogs (Seeking Truth, Dreams in Darkness, Just Another Fool) and work their way down. I don't feel there is anything wrong with starting in the middle of the story, or at the beginning. We just need for something that expands the Mythos and continues to shock us, rather than blogs that play within the confines of the structured genre.

I think TT and EMH have begun stretching the boundaries a bit - EMH in particular is its own animal. I'm not that up on most of the blogs. I do think some of the blog attempts at experimentation recently have come out lame. I don't even want to know what Core Theory is.

I do think endings also have to be challenged. While I expect the big 3 to all end the same basic way, the same old nihilistic "everyone dies" ending is going to get tiresome eventually. If anything, the road to the dark ending can at least be subverted or altered in some way.

If I ever had a viable Slender-idea I wouldn't blog or vlog it. I'm no good at all that. I'd commit it to a script or treatment, and then probably shut it away forever, because I'd feel horribly guilty if I ever got lucky enough to pitch it, as though I were profiting off a bunch of other people. But inevitably someone, somewhere is going to snatch up this nebulous property and make a major killing off it. It won't be long.

Very well put. We need to see more writers doing things with the story that hasn't been done. Like I said earlier, I'm not the biggest fan of H(a)unting, but I respect the fact that they at least tried something relatively new.

I think writers need to take a look at the Mythos as a whole and say "ok, what can I add to this without it being ridiculous?"
