I didn't realize I wouldn't be able to access all of the chat at the end of the book club, so cut and pasted what I could grab that was left. Here are the key points from NHT:

Welcome to the Snow Town Library's virtual bookclub. I hope you've just enjoyed that audio portion because it was a song I chose because I thought that it was appropriate for tonight. A tribute to Edgar Allen Poe: THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO.

Now I've written a few notes for us tonight as the moderator. Let me introduce myself: I am Ruthie Randolph, Head librarian at the Snow Town library.

This is a short story in the horror genre, though careful readers will note the story contains a great deal of subtle humjour. Poe was an early developer of the short story as a literary genre. Now, he defined a short story as a narrative prose work that:
1. is short enough to be read in one sitting, which we all did.
2. Takes place in one local on a single day or even a few hours
3. centres on a single line of action
4. maintains a single mood
Every word or phrase should contribute to the theme and the mood. Let's talk a moment about the narration or the point of view. First person unreliable. Now Montrisso tells the story in the 1s person meaning he uses pronouns such as I me my and so on. He is called an unreliable narrator because he is mentally unbalanced. His narration may be untrustworthy.

Let me stop for a moment right here. This idea of untrustworthy is quite fitting. It has come to my attention that someone in the Snow Town Virtual Bookclub is part of a corral to stop the Snow People. It has also come to my attention that the slate box has been removed from the vault. What have you planned? Better yet, what have I planned?


She is definitely telling us something important about the "unreliable narrator".

It makes me think of a slightly out there idea I had last night but haven't written here...

What if Job is the unreliable narrator? He found the first Snow Person. He was the one who talked with them first.

The three founding families were fleeing religious persecution from other colonies because they were spiritualists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritualism. NHT says she thinks Job was influenced by Rosicrucianism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosicrucianism

These two belief structures are a bit different to each other - and we know the founding Hs had stopped speaking to each other due to conflict - when suddenly Job found the Snow Person that has enough elements of their religious beliefs to bring them all together. What if he kind of made up all the rules, perhaps because he had a mental illness, and everyone bought it because it told them they would be protected and could live life how they wanted to.

Maybe the bells etc are part of a mass hysteria, or part of the initiation rites, only the most senior member/s of The Society know the truth and they are the ones that create the snow people, ring the bells, etc? Everyone else is so drunk and tired that they start imagining things?

Maybe Louise found out the truth and tried to stop it, and they bricked her into the vault for it... Maybe her ghost has transformed into the snow people to make it true in a darker way...

OR NHT could be the unreliable witness - she didn't start helping Peg until after Ruthie and Clare knew something was going on, we know she's high in the Society, it's a bit suss that we've been telling Peg to talk to NHT and get the slates, suddenly it's handed to her on a plate, and NHT gives her something she says will keep her safe, while sending her to the lower spiral... Which could actually be leading her to her death, same as Fortunato.

Any other crack pot theories?

 		Well, the post-bookclub blog is up. Looks like we're going to have to help Peg recruit Edward, Claire, and Ruthie (!) for whatever comes next. Shocked

I'm starting a lengthy e-mail to Natasha full of questions - I'd suggest the same for everyone else! Maybe we can finally get some of our lingering questions answered! Very Happy

For starters, that box looks a bit shiny and new - who says NHT gave her the real slates? Could be a plot by the Society to make her think she's got what she wants - like The Cask story. Unreliable narrator. NHT is acting like a friend, has told Peg that Clare, Ruth and Edward would do what she wants (but they have not been on Peg's side in the past), and now sending her down the Spiral.

Yes, that's a good point... Didn't we hear that there were multiple slates at one point? And that they contained all the history of the snow people on them? Maybe I'm confusing things in my mind... but if I'm not, this singular blank slate does not seem to match what we've been told before... Confused

 		I sent an email to private consisting of this message and the revised snowtown history we got from NHT I did not tell private where we got it from because at the time I didn't know if I should out her or not. Here is what I sent

 		Warned Peg, there's little else to do. I'm extremely concerned about the inconsistency with the number of slates, as well.

Also, there's strong implication that we've missed something in Greensleeves. I'm not entirely comfortable with staring at a depressing song for hours, but here's the image with the pieces of paper put apparently in the correct order.

Luci, can you ask Edward for more details he has overheard? Like what Ruthie is planning? Or I don't know maybe just an open ended question about wanting to hear snow towns juicy secrets? I just want to know more of what he has over heard.

Yes, it would seem Greensleeves is important... The only thing I could get from the video is that he made a mistake at 0:31. The lyric at that point should be "joy" I believe...but my timing could be off. Does anyone else have a thought on that? Maybe he's just letting us know to go back to the lake and look for something else from the magician? That's where we ended up last time the song came into play. I'm sleepy and have hit a dead end, for now. Dunno

Peg is wearing a totem charm, "the spiral" which protects and gives her power. Am antsy that Ruthie has access to her own totem charm, making her impervious to Peg's power. Whatever, Ruthie did seem pretty prepared for the "Cabal". Shocked
