greensleeves

More correspondence with Edward:

Dearest Edward, thank you, I loved your gd of public affection! However, it does strike me as an odd choice of song - isn't Greensleeves about unrequited love? And yet, here I am, organising papers so that I might move to Snow Town to be by your side - nothing unrequited in that! Has someone said something to make you doubt the veracity of my feelings for you? Do I have something to fear in your shifting mood?

Dear Luci,

I have no idea where Ruthie is at the moment. I'm covering the library's front desk. She was supposed to be here at three to open. It isn't like her to simply not show up. Tom Haynes just came by looking for her too.

I apologize for not responding to you sooner. My day has been filled with strange twists and turns. About my choice of Greensleeves, I find it to be a beautiful song, but it wasn't planned. I sat down to play Rachmaninov's symphony 2 for you and for some reason Greensleeves poured out onto the piano. Not a perfect performance, but it was from my heart.

Sincerely,

Edward Harmon

Seems he was channelling when he played Greensleeves. Whatever is going on with the Snow People and Ruthie, methinks it's got to be centred back to this theme of love triangles and unrequited love.

Awwww, you have won over even sober Edward!! Well done Luci!! I think you are right about the theme of unrequited love. I think we need to find out who the last married suitor was of LH. I think the best bet is to get at her diary. Ruthie seemed very distressed when she thought someone had been reading it. I also think we need to find Ruthie.... Maybe we can ask Edward to go on a hunt for her?

Yes, very happy about that, though the cynic in me suspects it has something to do with the Snow People's magic!

All good thoughts! I am worried about sending anyone after anyone at the moment though as I fear we might send the wrong person to the wrong place that turns out to be a trap...

Hamlet by William Shakespeare

This refers to Act 1 Scene IV when Hamlet follows the ghost of his dead father against his friends wishes.

Hamlet is about a Prince who's father is recently dead, who sees a ghost that seems to be his father. The ghost tells Hamlet a story of his father King Hamlet's murder (by Claudius), and asks Hamlet to avenge him. Hamlet is not sure if it is really the ghost of his dead father, if what the ghost says is true, but he tells his closest friends that it is, and decides to pretend he is crazy while he investigates this.

While he is behaving erratically, the new King Claudius sends for two of Hamlets old friends to work out what is going on. Hamlet greets them warmly, but then works out they have been sent to spy on him. He sends them off with a letter that means when they get to their destination they are executed.

Hamlet is in love with Ophelia, who is told by Claudius and her father that Hamlet doesn't truly care for her, and they convince Ophelia to let them spy on the lovers conversation. Ophelia offers to return her remembrances to Hamlet, and he flies into a rage questioning her honesty.

It then gets more confusing - various people plotting and killing one another (it's called tragedy for a reason!).

Out take: the unreliable narrator - does the ghost tell the truth? does Hamlet really see the ghost of his father, or is he mad? His friends betray him. He becomes paranoid. Other people get caught up and killed in the mess.

Nemean Lion

In case the Nemean Lion in the Hamlet quote is a clue, here's what I found about it on Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Nemean lion (Greek, Λέων της Νεμέας (Léōn tēs Neméas); Latin: Leo Nemaeus) was a vicious monster in Greek mythology that lived at Nemea. It was eventually killed by Heracles. It could not be killed with mortal weapons because its golden fur was impervious to attack. Its claws were sharper than mortal swords and could cut through any armor.

The lion is usually considered to have been the offspring of Typhon[1] (or Orthrus)[2] and Echidna; it is also said to have fallen from the moon as the offspring of Zeus and Selene, or alternatively born of the Chimera. The Nemean lion was sent to Nemea in the Peloponnesus to terrorize the city.
[edit] The First Labor of Heracles

The first of Heracles' twelve labours, set by King Eurystheus (his cousin) was to slay the Nemean lion.

According to one version of the myth, the lion took women as hostages to its lair in a cave near Nemea, luring warriors from nearby towns to save the damsel in distress. After entering the cave, the warrior would see the woman (usually feigning injury) and rush to her side. Once he was close, the woman would turn into a lion and kill the warrior, devouring his remains and giving the bones to Hades.

Heracles wandered the area until he came to the town of Cleonae. There he met a boy who said that if Heracles slew the Nemean lion and returned alive within 30 days, the town would sacrifice a lion to Zeus; but if he did not return within 30 days or he died, the boy would sacrifice himself to Zeus.[1] Another version claims that he met Molorchos, a shepherd who had lost his son to the lion, saying that if he came back within 30 days, a ram would be sacrificed to Zeus. If he did not return within 30 days, it would be sacrificed to him as a dead hero.

While searching for the lion, Heracles fetched some arrows to use against it, not knowing that its golden fur was impenetrable; when he found and shot the lion and firing at it with his bow, he discovered the fur's protective property when the arrow bounced harmlessly off the creature's thigh. After some time, Heracles made the lion return to his cave. The cave had two entrances, one of which Heracles blocked; he then entered the other. In those dark and close quarters, Heracles stunned the beast with his club and, using his immense strength, strangled it to death. Others say that he shot arrows at it, eventually shooting it in the unarmored mouth. After slaying the lion, he tried to skin it with a knife from his belt, but failed. He then tried sharpening the knife with a stone and even tried with the stone itself. Finally, Athena, noticing the hero's plight, told Heracles to use one of the lion's own claws to skin the pelt. Others say that Heracles' armor was, in fact, the hide of the lion of Cithaeron.

When he returned, King Eurystheus was shocked. Eurystheus warned him that the tasks set for him would become increasingly difficult. He then sent Heracles off to complete his next quest, which was to destroy the Lernaean hydra.

So, the lion -- which fell from the moon -- could not be hurt by mortal weapons, but only with its own claws. So do we need to use something of the snow people's to destroy them?

I am starting to suspect that Private is Clare Haynes. She fits the profile: a bit timid, seems scared, and reluctant yet conflicted about the snow people, while not wanting to incur Ruthie's wrath. What do you all think?

That makes sense with the map Peg posted. When Peg said Fred walked down Tempest Trail, I asked PP if s/he lived on Tempest Trail or Bluster Lane. PP replied, Bluster Lane. I've emailed PP and asked if she is Clare.

I guess the pigpen/Rosicrucian cipher really is symbolic for these guys. Suggested Peg take the photos down, I hope Ruthie doesn't see them.

Email from Peg:

Quote:
Hi there TankGirl!

Lawrence will be going with us. I guess we will go tomorrow. I wrote to
N.H.T. and asked for more instructions, but haven't heard from her.
Called her as well, but no answer. Has Ruthie shown up? Anyone heard
from her?

Peg

In response to:

Quote:
Hey Peg!

I just saw what Fred's been up to in your newest blog post! I've deciphered the first 3, and I'm hoping to see that 4th soon. Smile

So far you've got a pigpen cipher and it says:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
go to path above bone orchard
walk until the path divides
stop and count to ten

Sounds um... scary. I'd recommend having Lawrence follow with the video camera!

And:

Here's the next set: 4-6

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
reverse your direction
walk into the narrow path
the lower spiral is on your left

Definitely scary! What do we do now?? I definitely vote for having the video camera with you, as well as someone else to keep everyone safe. This is where you've got to bring 1 member of each founding family, right?

Has anyone heard from Rutie or NHT today?

...guys?

I've been corresponding with Private, and I think I figured out who she was, and... I told her to run from Snow Town.... and now something bad's happened.

First I wrote this:

Quote:
Based on some of your responses to my compatriots and some notes I have received from an annoymous source I am growing concerned for your safety.

I need you to seriously consider leaving Snow Town for a short time. If my sources are correct you are in terrible danger.

Stay out of the snow.

And Private wrote back:

Quote:
Dear Rilan,

I can never leave Snow Town. Never.

Private

Then I wrote about... uh... asking her about her identity. She hasn't responded to this one, but what I said was:

Quote:
You're Clare Haynes, aren't you?

This has all spiraled out of your control and expectations, hasn't it? You were scared and looking for friends after seeing something you didn't understand. And it started to get bigger and you didn't have any support around you, but you wanted to hide, so you hid from everyone but asked for help. We can help but you need to trust us. Please. I am starting to fear for your life. Trust us, and we will save you.

If you know anything about what Ruthie is planning, please tell us. We will help you.

And then she just sent me a new e-mail:

Quote:
Dear David,

The wind is back tonight! The howling seems to be reaching into my house and surrounding me! I'm at my wits' end! I don't think I can take this anymore! I should have listened to you and left Snow Town days ago! I thought of Peg Harmon and knew she would help me! So I ran down to her house about an hour ago, but her place is dark and locked up! There is no place for me to go! And now the howling is getting louder! I have a terrible feeling about tonight! A terrible terrible feeling!

Private

So I've replied...

Quote:
Private! GET TO A HOUSE! MAKE A FIRE! KEEP YOURSELF CLOSE TO ANY SOURCE OF HEAT!

It was all I could think of. That the Snow People or whatever's going on won't like high temperatures.

But I think we just lost Private. Or maybe we might soon... Sad

Wow... well, Peg just e-mailed me, so I wrote back and let her know that Private needed help and that our best guess is that it's Claire. Did you see on the map where Claire lives? Right next to Ruthie...
