Slender Man Wikipedia

I couldn't find this mentioned anywhere else but this popped up on another forum and I thought I'd share it here:

Was just wondering why there was no Slender Man Wikipedia entry, or, more accurately why there seem to have been attempts to create one, only for them all to be taken down. I found the following interesting (emphasis is my own):

Quote:
21:34, 7 August 2009 NawlinWiki (talk | contribs) deleted "Slender Man" ‎ (A7: Article about a real person, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject)

Is there a particular reason he doesn't have his own entry that I'm unaware of, or does anyone have any thoughts?

Long story short?

Slenderman doesn't fit under whatever Wikipedia jibberish that is required for an official entry.

An existence created from several internet forums, numerous blogs and vlogs...isn't relevant enough.

*shrug*

The "slenderman was a person" bit was probably derived from this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footstone

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abominable_snowman

i realize they have a history of freaking people out and being faked and stuff, but they're just as real as slenderman.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Wikipedia editor, so this is all just me talking out of my ass.

The Slender Man article was deleted because of Criteria A7 for speedy deletion, which is "No indication of importance (individuals, animals, organizations, web content)."

Quote:
An article about a real person, individual animal(s), organization (e.g. band, club, company, etc., except schools),[4] or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This is distinct from verifiability and reliability of sources, and is a lower standard than notability. This criterion applies only to articles about web content and to articles about people, organizations, and individual animals themselves, not to articles about their books, albums, software, or other creative works. This criterion does not apply to species of animals, only to individual animal(s). The criterion does not apply to any article that makes any credible claim of significance or importance even if the claim is not supported by a reliable source or does not qualify on Wikipedia's notability guidelines.[5] The criterion does apply if the claim of significance or importance given is not credible. If the claim's credibility is unclear, you can improve the article yourself, propose deletion, or list the article at articles for deletion.

So it looks like it was automatically deleted (that is, wasn't even put up for debate) because no one bothered to give any reasoning why it was notable.

The notability criterion for Wikipedia is very important because it preserves the reliability of Wikipedia. If they allowed any thing to have an article, Wikipedia would be full of articles about persons, inside jokes, single episodes of television shows, obscure websites...etc. The point is that Wikipedia would become overwhelmingly full of articles of insignificant shit which no one cares enough about to actually contribute to. People will start to look at Wikipedia as a bunch of meaningless shit that no one cares to contribute to, and the experts will abandon it, etc...

The General Notability Guideline is this:

"If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article or stand-alone list."

Has Slender Man received any coverage in reliable, independent sources? That is, has their been a news report on Slender Man? I searched for Slender Man on Google News but found only a handful of results, none of which about Slender Man. Absolutely none for Marble Hornets. Whereas most of these did. Maybe they didn't get a spot on CNN (although a lot did) but some kind of independent source reported on most of them. In order to get the Slender Man article up, you need to find this source. This is your goal.

There is no criteria on Wikipedia about the subject actually existing. As long as its factual written (that is, as long as it's made clear in the article that Slender Man does not exist), then they'd have no problem with that aspect. The only issue is notability. Big Foot, Nessy, and the Abominable Snowman are all very well-known and very well-reported mythological creatures. There have been professional documentaries about all three of them, all of them get constant popular culture references, and the average person on the street will recognize any of them by name. Slendy? Not so much.

Slendy's a being created on the internet.

I don't see a Wiki article on Longcat.

Take it to Encyclopedia Dramatica, folks. I do agree that Slendy's probably got enough information on him to be considered notable, but until he's got attention in meatspace, you're not going to get anything about him on Wiki except for that one sentence on the Tulpa page.

Location: Potentially everywhere.

In time, depending on how prevalent and lasting the Slenderman mythos gets, it could warrant a Wikipedia entry. Just not yet.
