Auction

Bid up to whatever an item is worth to you personally.

The idea of an auction is to match buyer with seller,
not to provide a bargain to the buyer at the seller's expense.

In any case, you'll have to bid past the reserve price to get
the item.

That Fairyland book seems to be worth (very roughly)
about $200 (I don't know anything about it, and dont' take my word for it, but a little surfing gave me $175-250), on the open market, neglecting any sentimental value it may have to friends of the Aglaura library.

I wouldn't think anybody who had a copy would be anxious to
get rid of it either, so I would guess the reserve price is set high.

As far as the Tennyson is concerned, it's worth whatever Wes'
contribution is worth to you.

Looks like fun.

Author of A Day in Fairy Land

Our author is a woman. Thought she was a man.

In 1951 he (along with his wife, Sigrid) founded Story House Corp. A book bindery with a revolutionary new process for prebinding children's books that eventually evolved into an equally revolutionary process for binding paperback books into hard cover books with a clear plastic cover preserving the original cover of the book.

INFO Auction: A Day in Fairyland

I went off to look a bit more carefully at the copies available
through Alibris and Abebooks. Judging by publisher and
dimensions, the Aglaura copy is the same edition as #2, #3 below.
(On Bidfields the dimensions are given in mm.)
Incidentally it's now at $75 and the reserve has been met.

A Day in Fairyland, Sigrid Rahmas Four copies found:

1. Late 30's? Ramborn Corp Little Neck NY Printed in Sweden VG/G 15+"x23" (Small World)
This copy priced at $174.95 on Alibris $175.00 on Abebooks

2. ca. 1950 (some damage and writing noted, otherwise G) 14"x18" (Barter Books)
This copy priced at $150.10 on Alibris and at $139.55 on Abebooks
3. ca. 1948 VG+ Printed in Sweden for Ramborn, 14x18" (Aleph-Bet Books)
This copy $250 on Abebooks

4. 1967 Story House Corp VG (Ahab Books)
Priced at $149.95 on Alibris and $150.00 at Abebooks

Also by Sigrid Rahmas (not that you should care much,
since these don't have illustrations by Ana Mae Seagren):

Benin Massacre 1898 $48.12 "Written by one of the two survivors of the incident."

Mother Sun and Her Planet Children 1991 edition priced approx $7-10.

But
I also found this link
which as I read it says that a copy was auctioned off in England
for 8 pounds sterling not long ago.

On the other hand, the phrase that lingers is rare and elusive.

Disclaimers:

(1) I still don't know what I'm talking about;

(2) I'm bidding on some items myself, conceivably even this one.

Hey, we're being ripped off

It was only bought for $12.9848!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're being ripped off. Confused
(addition:I am referring to our Aglaura auction. It's already up to $75.00. Last time I checked. Now compared to some other prices ($250.00), we're getting a steal. But it is only Monday)

1 (one) Pound Sterling on date of book sale:

http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic
FXConverter - 164 Currency Converter Results
Friday, January 24, 2003
1 British Pound = 1.62310 US Dollar

1 US Dollar (USD) = 0.61610 British Pound (GBP)

Median price = 1.62280 / 1.62310 (bid/ask)
Minimum price = 1.61490 / 1.61540
Maximum price = 1.62390 / 1.62460

Did I do this right? It seems really cheap to me.

one too many numbers

There were one to many numbers in my bid tonite, just as I was about to enter another bid my cat jumped up on my keyboard and entered a little bit more than I really want to pay for the box. I've already contacted the auctioneer and let them know to let the person, who bid last before me, to have the tile box. Sorry about the screw up, the cat is now outside Sad Crying or Very sad
