The device is no doubt similar to the TU 56 tape drive or Braegen 14 external drive..

It would be something to access for additional stored info..same as xternal storage devices we use today..
So, when the prompt asks mount device it is asking which external info source to load? Since we dont have the physical pdp11 to observe, its probably up to the operator of the PDP 11 to attach and identify the device for us.
