Heh, this ink blot thing does seem quite apt though - Seeing things that aren't really there and assuming that things fit because what we're expecting to see!

Totally agreed, Jane Smile. Couldn't have said it better.
What about an Open Letter to the creators of this semi-professional attempt at creating a hype about how demoralizing it can be to throw out info which after all has no significant meaning?
Well, just joking, j.j.

It's funny because a few weeks ago I almost made a post about how people would react if they started throwing in pictures of inkblots.

Sara hacked into HLM and left a message -- later it was removed. The hacked entry is gone now from HLM.

new post 3/28

There's a new post at http://revalistic.com/ It links to a NY Times article about the Explorer III satellite. I haven't checked it out yet.

EDIT:
The NYTimes article requires payment.

Here's a link to the wikipedia page about it and its relationship to the Van Allen belts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explorer_3

The only way to view the full NY Times article is to buy it for $3.95 Sad

Hmmmm, wonder what Sarah is on about? High altitude nuclear testing, Van Allen Belt, Explorer 3 missing or not. Really have no idea where she's going with this. Confused

EXPCNV.DAT

I wonder if the expcnv.dat file is a recording of the Explorer III satellite. I found the following from the Sputnik 1 wikipedia entry

Quote:
News reports at the time pointed out that "anyone possessing a short wave receiver can hear the new Russian earth satellite as it hurtles over his area of the globe". Directions, provided by the American Radio Relay League were to "Tune in 20 megacycles sharply, by the time signals, given on that frequency. Then tune to slightly higher frequencies. The 'beep, beep' sound of the satellite can be heard each time it rounds the globe,"[49] The first recording of Sputnik 1's signal was made by RCA engineers near Riverhead, Long Island. They then drove the tape recording into Manhattan for broadcast to the public over NBC radio. However, as Sputnik rose higher over the East Coast, its signal was picked up by ham station W2AEE, the ham radio station of Columbia University. Students working in the university's FM station, WKCR, made a tape of this, and were the first to rebroadcast the Sputnik 1 signal to the American public (or such of it as could receive the FM station). The next morning two FBI agents took the tape from the station. It has never been returned.

Explorer III was launched the year after Sputnik 1.

It could be that the "woosh" at the end of the recording is the satellite getting knocked from orbit or something.

The expcnv.dat file is the clue that is driving me the craziest. Bang Head
