In the scientific sense of the word, the vlogs are the very definition of homoGENEous. The perspective characters in the Big 3 are all white men. Ergo, the vlogs are homogeneous (in that their genetic makeup is not visibly diverse), and it is not unfair to say so. It's a fair complaint, even if it's not the fault of the creators. Being aware of it, and hopeful for more diversity in the future, is not the same as griping at the creators.

Oh, poor Jeff. Well, what is he expected to say, really? It's not his fault and I don't think any less of any of these series for their cultural makeup.

I've had an idea between myself and a friend about starting up a slendyvlog for some time now, probably since last fall. We live in bumfuck nowhere, so clues would have to be distributed by mail or somesuch, but lord knows we have the atmosphere, the time, and the talent available.

Problem: if the series is not that great, we don't want to be known as the tranny slender-series. It would be a whole hell of a lot easier if this particular genre weren't so homogeneous and dominated by white male college kids. I know that the right thing to do is probably step up to the plate and add a little flavor, but we're pretty fucking scared of internet backlash. Petty, huh?

Besides, you know that would be center of every epileptic tree planted and that would just be exhausting on both sides of the veil.

My courage fails me, at least until I wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb. I suspect that is part of the reason why others have not stepped up and diversified this field either, but not the entire reason.

Part of the problem, if you'll allow me to riff for a second, is that (I would guess) the overwhelming majority of internet nerd culture are white, heterosexual, young men. I don't reaaaaally have any evidence to back that up, but even the Something Awful forums (where this phenomenon began) has a running gag about their core membership consisting of white dudes with neck beards wearing fedoras. If we operate under that assumption, which I think is fair, most people who are exposed to the Slenderman mythos are white dudes. And of these white dudes, a small percentage decide to make their own vlog or blog.

^^ That is most probably the main reason. Such are the joys of being part of something tiny.

The worst part is I'm a female actress and would be totally into doing a vlog. I have a camera but no idea how to edit videos and no real desire to spend a bunch of time trying to create and keep a whole series in check. It's much more simple for me or people like me to write blogs. I already know how to type and it's free. And I've noticed a great deal of backlash against the slender blogs. That could be because they aren't as exclusive to the "better" slender man stuff, but don't forget UnNatural events or (I missed this one, but I've seen it discussed as awful) Forever Stalked. I think there is more potential for diversity under the slender blog heading than the vlogs.

I've been planning out a plot for a Slenderman-related story about a grizzled old black dude who first ran into Slendy as a child in the 60s. But yeah, I don't really see why race would be seen as terribly relevent to the Slendy mythos.

For some reason I bet in the next video will meet a new friend of the cast.

I think I'd be annoyed if any series shoehorned in some non-white character just for diversity. I mean, if you know a non-white person with decent acting ability (i.e. better than Milo) and you have a role for them in your plot, that's one thing.
But I'm not sure if I should have a say, being a white male who has little interaction with non-white people.

The Slender Man mythos isn't white dominated because of some creator's choice to only pick white characters. The video series are mainly white because they're made by students who are white and they tend to make themselves the main characters, either out of desire or necessity.

I personally disagree with everything on the lines of "There should be more homosexual/minority race people" in pretty much anything that has nothing to do with race or preference. There doesn't need to be more homosexuals or minorities, just as there doesn't need to be heteros or majority races.

It is my personal belief that the more people emphasize skin color, the higher the chance that there will be racism or discrimination. If people would stop making unrelated decisions based on race, there wouldn't be discrimination. Likewise, if people stopped paying so much attention to what someone looks like on the outside, there would be no racism.

Because the person who posted this topic apologized and clarified his reason for posting it, this isn't directed at him. To anyone else reading this, don't focus on race if it doesn't matter.

^This right here? Wisdom.

Race REALLY doesn't matter when it comes to creating a quality piece of media, regardless of what it is.

I wouldn't mind seeing a SM vlog attempted in an urban setting at all. Again, if I was younger and had the time and know-how it's what I'd do. I'd plaster him from here to Times Square.

If I had equipment and could get my film major friend on board I'd totally film one in a different location down here. Southern Arizona so there's a lot of desert to play with, but we also have mountains with trees (including an entire few acres of forest that's basically ash now) in case we NEED a forest scene, and it's a short drive to Phoenix for a more urban setting.
