Has anyone been able to decipher what the " Hostile/ Indirect Service" could mean? I can't see it being binary, so we need another angle.

Well, I asked him about those in an email just now.
Quote:
Enjoying the blog, a friend told me to look at the notes you received. I have been obsessing over the notes. Both the hidden message of "beware the men in black rings" as well as the "Hostile in Direct Service" notes. The symbols look like they could be a binary code. In binary I get 23 29 25 31. I can't make anything of those, I don't get any letters, but could they be dates? I do see a pattern of: +6, -4, +6... Any significance to you? Or anything you've thought about them?

Reply was this:

Rorschach,

Binary code? Hmm, it seemed like complete nonsense to me, anyway. I'm not sure how you got code out of it, but that's really not my strong point. When I looked at it, I thought maybe the hash marks were supposed to represent hostile, and in the service whatever. Honestly, I didn't think too much about it. I have no time for crazy people, except in movies. :/

Its interesting that you see a pattern though, that's kind of interesting. Hmmmm....

Tom

Seemed interested in a possible pattern, but nothing I've been able to make sense of.

So
I sent Pickman an email, and he replied about some pictures I sent him, and due to my mention of lovecraft, he asked what my fav Lovecraft story was. I replied (The Outsider), and he sent me this:

Quote:
Outsider was the first Lovecraft story I ever read actually, and it is a good one. One of favorites though is 'The The Tombs of the Pharaohs' which he ghost write for Houdini, and I'm also quite fond of The Colour out of Space, which you should read if you haven't. The idea of an indescribable color (which is only the first element of the story) is fascinating to me.

Tom

So, I'm currently scouring these stories for anything that may have anything to do with the blog
If anyone wants to help, feel free. It'd be greatly appreciated (I'm sure I'll overlook something-_-)

The Colour Out of Space features an abandoned well (TP's earlier "incorrect" URL)

"...As I walked hurriedly by I saw the tumbled bricks and stones of an old chimney and cellar on my right, and the yawning black maw of an abandoned well whose stagnant vapours played strange tricks with the hues of the sunlight."

well i don't know but..

When i first saw the 4 quintets of symbols, i thought that, since there are 4 words and 4 groups, the symbols are a kind of different alphabet for the 4 words.

Though with a better look there are only two characters. So it cannot be a different representation of the words but maybe a code.

Some have tried binary and got nowhere. So i thought i'd try morse, but nothing there also. The most promising result i got was: "AS SN IG 5". With ASSN meaning assassin, perhaps?

But i don't think it's morse cause the symbols are not split in groups that represent a char each.

Then i thought of the symbols as a calendar. Maybe the sword symbol just marks days that something will happen. The second group(above the "In Direct Service") fits this assumption, because pickman found the dead bird on the third day and the note on the fourth.

So maybe for a week, the "friendly" neighbour does nothing weird and something will happen the day that the next symbol indicates. So if we begin count from 03/23(the first blog entry), something might happen at 04/03.

Anyway just my thoughts on the matter, i am not certain of anything.

Lines above hostile

In thinking about patterns, the first two sets of lines are mirror images of each other.

He did write a mirror image response that was posted earlier.

Awesome Fetus. Way to keep banging your head on it. I thought of the dates idea too. If my date pattern has any merit at all, I guess we could see something tomorrow, on the second. We will see soon enough.

This was something that caught my attention as well. I'm about 80% sure the marks equate with letters somehow.

If only my IQ was 5 points higher!

New entry

there's a new entry up on the site - a silly cartoon on April Fools' Day:

http://www.theabandonedwindmill.com/model.html

The title is clearly a play on Pickman's Model, a Lovecraft short story:

in direct service

According to google's web definition, "Direct Service" means:
Quote:
providing service directly to the community, community residents or both. Direct service may be tutoring, cleaning a river bed, teaching English, painting a home, assisting a teacher, counseling a crime victim or teaching someone CPR. ...

So, what is the community in pickman's case? I think that if we believe that the poster of the note is dwelling nearby,
then the community is him, pickman and whoever else stays close to that area.

If so, then maybe the "neighbour" tries to tell us that he/she worked on an altruistic impulse posting the note.
Perhaps the presence of the word hostile, as well as the nature of the note itself was a warning.
I don't know though, if it is of benevolent intentions trying to warn Pickman of something hostile, or a prank to scare him away.

The question is:
Is Pickman part of the community there, or not?

Two new updates as per his twitter, http://www.theabandonedwindmill.com/obit.html and http://www.theabandonedwindmill.com/things.html. Obit has the following picture, again with missing letters. I count the following letters missing, but I'm in the middle of cleaning house so it could be inaccurate.

EDIT: Ninja'd /facepalm

On the second updated, things, there's "con't" write together with the date, on the label. Maybe something connected with the handwriting on the notes?

I think the "con't" has to do with how both posts are from the same date, so the first post page is "4/2/11" and the second is "4/2/11 con't".

... makes completely sense. Here's the problem when you think that EVERYTHING have a bazillion meanings.

But we still have the apostrophe. Like well and windmill, doesn't look like a simple typo or mistake. I really can understand it like "can't count" or something like that, but maybe I'm thinking too much XD
