Haha, ironically, I solved that one pretty quickly.

First, try:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
paying attention to each of the different objects.

If that isn't getting you anywhere, try:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
saying the different objects out loud.

Meanwhile, I'm still stuck on the recursion one.

I've tried
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
indexing "recursion adj" against "see recursion" backwards and forwards, with each letter serving as either x or y. I just get gibberish, and moreover, nothing happens when I put it in. Am I totally on the wrong track?

Gah! Totally forgot about this!
Better late than never.
Besides having inconsistent clues...
Worst rebus EVAR!

ETA: Way to go, urthstripe! 3 minutes!

Word! That's exactly the kind of thinking I applied to it for the longest time.
It's actually much less involved. No less or more correct than any of several other options; Just not one I trend towards.

Aha!

Got it! Puzzle solved.
I can't believe
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I spent hours indexing every combination of those letters, and never thought to just go straight

Many thanks to jkm and Rogi for their multiple attempts at providing hints that would get through my thick skull and yet not just give the whole thing away.

If anyone is still having trouble with the last question, I would suggest
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
reading the wikipedia entry on recursion.

I've had that page open in its own browser window on two different machines for a week now and have read it countless times. I still don't know of any different answers I could try, that I haven't, based on it.

I'm sure it's akin to getting hung-up on "Hilton" or single letter FIRST names.

ETA: That's it. I'm done going down rabbit holes on this one. I'm convinced it's all a matter of sloppily guessing the right string and that there really isn't a logical method involved in the final solve.

Haha yeah, I got the first two clues, and just made a guess on the whole phrase. This will be the first and last time I get so high up on the weekly leaderboard.

Hi, I was lurking here to find hints on the Recursion seal, and I had to admit that you were of great help !
To get the solution I found that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the wikipedia entry on "Recursion_(computer_science)" is really much more clearer regarding the solution.

And thanks to urthstripe for nudging me along.

Does anyone know what the requirements are for the Patron, Regular, Theorem Champ, Practice Makes Perfect, and Theorem Rookie are? Thanks Smile

different theorem

I got it now. I even tried sounding out the puzzle in different ways, I was just using the wrong sounds.

Here is a bunch of stuff that confused me on that one:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

- I remember something about Michael Phelps possibly losing some medals for the pot thing. (He didn't lose them.)
- I didn't know Alex Rodriguez had a nickname. I thought he was the only one without a name like that in the box. Even after I found his nickname, I still used words like Alex or Yankee to describe him.
- I wasn't looking enough at the nature of the differences. Tron versus on. Wall-E versus E.
- I kept trying to use the position of the different box to make letters and then use those letters to create a text string

Congrats on getting the recursion puzzle.

Thank you.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

- I thought he was Derek Jeter.
&
- I thought that was Johnny-5

I was doing the same thing...frustrating, even more so since I had previously tried the correct way only with the x&y axis inverted and subsequently abandoned the idea.

Some things are more rewarding if they remain mysterious. I can, however, help you with one of them.

Thanks for that; not inverting led me to solving it finally.he x&y axis inverted and subsequently abandoned the idea.

Still recursively stumped

I must be over-thinking this. I've tried every recursion-related concept and theory I can think of, as well as every significant word I can find on each recursion-related Wikipedia page.

Upside: a fun meander through faded memories of CS and math theory. Downside: the solution to this puzzle might make sense in retrospect, but it's more logical in the backtracking than the forward-solving, I think.

Was this an edit to comment on the solution or do you still need help?
