New post on Revalistic main page. It links to a NY times article. Does anyone here have a subscription so that they can view the full article?

I don't have a New York times subscription but here is some Explorer 3 info from the NASA site:

Explorer 3
NSSDC ID: 1958-003A
Description:
Explorer 3 (1958 Gamma 1) was launched in conjunction with the IGY by the U.S. Army (Ordinance) into an eccentric orbit. The objective of this spacecraft was a continuation of experiments started with Explorer 1. The payload consisted of a cosmic ray counter (a Geiger-Mueller tube), and a micrometeorite detector (erotion gauge). The Explorer 3 spacecraft was spin stabilized and had an on-board tape recorder to provide a complete radiation history for each orbit. It was discovered soon after launch that the satellite was in a tumbling motion with a period of about 7 s. Explorer 3 decayed from orbit on June 27, 1958, after 93 days of operation.

There are already some posts about this on pages 8 & 9 of this thread.

The discussion really didn't go anywhere. It'd be nice if it would lead to something...

I don't think that anyone was ever able to produce the article that Sarah is referring to in its entirety.

THE EXPLORER III IS BELIEVED DEAD
Experts see a 'Probability' That Army Satellite Came Down on Friday Night

The transcript from the New York Times News article. A couple of places: the words "orbit" and "gone" had letters obscured in the original. I completed the words with parentheses around the obscured parts.

THE EXPLORER III IS BELIEVED DEAD
_________________________
Experts see a 'Probability' That Army Satellite Came Down on Friday Night
_________________________

Explorer III, the second Army satellite to attain o(rb)it, is believed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at Cambridge, Mass. to have come to an end some time Friday night. The satellite was launched into an erratic orbit on March 26.
The belief of the Explorer's demise was expressed as a "probability" yesterday, on the basis of a report from a Moon-watch team in Memphis, Tenn. Observers there informed the observatory that at 10:31 P.M. Friday, a pale orange light was seen to the south.
This observation, correlated with the data reported from Wichita, Kan., the day before, led a Smithsonian spokesman to assert:
"We would assume it came down shortly thereafter."
The Memphis sighting would indicate that the maximum time for one revolution had fallen to eighty-eight minutes---from an original cycle of 116---and that the satellite could not have survived more than a few additional trips.

Airline Reports Studied
The Cambridge institution doubted that a bright moving object reported independently by two trans-Atlantic airline pilots early yesterday had been Explorer III. Both pilots---one with Pan American Airways, the other with K. L. M. Royal Dutch Airlines --- timed their sightings at 10:17 P.M. Friday.
But three factors made it unlikely that what they had seen was the satellite. For one thing, Explorer III orbited at between 33 and 34 degrees to the equatorial plane. Both planes were lying at more than 50 degrees north latitude. The other factors were the time and the observed direction of flight.
The Smithsonian said it was still "conceivable, but highly improbable," that the pilots had seen the satellite. This might have been the case had the thirty - one - inch bullet - shaped projectile gon(e) far off course in tumbling erratically into the lower atmosphere.
Another possibility was that the satellite was still up. If so, it was due to cross the United States from one to four times last night.
Assuming Explorer III to be down, the international satellite community now consists of Explorer I, sent up by the Army on Jan. 31; Vanguard I, the Navy's small test sphere launched March17, and Sputnik III, put into orbit by the Soviet union on May 15.

I'm thinking Sarah's barking up the wrong conspiracy here. The Explorer III could still be safely out in space, in which case this projectile is... DUN DUN DUN... Not from this earth!
(Or, you know, a meteorite, or something.) But the first theory is pretty theme-appropriate. Smile

Regarding the small Navy test sphere, they are referring to Vanguard 1
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Vanguard which is STILL IN ORBIT!

Astron

There's another post today at http://revalistic.com/. This time about a Soviet spacecraft called Astron. I haven't checked it out yet - maybe it's an April Fools joke...
Some of our comments appear to be posted now.

Also - there's an April calendar up at HLM http://www.hooklineandminker.com/

Re the comments that are now posted - I sent a comment under MM for Major Minor and I see Melodyman's name. But there doesn't seem to be a link to our comments. There are some interesting names and messages included in the comments that are posted. They're at the about link at http://revalistic.com/about#comment-29

Just curious -- h3llb3nt -
any relation to Dr Hellius Bententstein ?

EDIT: searched combinations of some of the comment names and astron. An alderson astron search turned up Dan Alderson. I don't know if the alderson name on the comment is some kind of tribute to him - it should be. Here's a couple links to some info on Dan Alderson.
