Emailed Lane with my theories to see if I was anywhere close. He responded that "band of brothers" is just a metaphor, and to keep thinking about the missions.

He also let me know that he's given clues and other help to multiple other people. I'm completely new to ARGs, but isn't there a way to share this information? If there are multiple hints out there, I'd sure love to hear them. Maybe an IRC channel we could brainstorm in, or something?

ETA: Guess that's my way of admitting I have no clue what they want with this one. I looked up everything I could find on the Brotherhood of the Linked Ring, found a french page writing about secrets and night and photography in the absence of light...and more wholesale retailers for linked rings than I'd ever thought possible.

Can the blog's owner see the passwords being tried? Because s/he's probably getting a kick out of my guesses.

I asked my father (a retired photographer) about the Brotherhood, but he'd never heard of them. Figures, they weren't around very long. A lot of people have adopted the name, though; and some, the ideas (to the extreme.)

Hoping we get additional clue by the morning. Smile

I wonder if I'm over-thinking this one already--from the way the first two went.

Heh, yeah, was totally over-thinking the photography one as well.

January 27 - Apollo 1 fire - engineering problems cause fire
February 4 - 1977 Chicago loop derailment - track problems and operator error
February 15 - USS Maine - accidental fire on board
March 14 - Polish Airlines flight crash - landing mechanism problem
April 13 - Apollo 13 - oxygen tank ruptured
April 15 - Titanic - hubris -_- oh, and poor engineering/design

Engineering issues? I'm not sure if I'm on the right track with man made disasters/mistakes causing possibly and actually fatal errors. The dates don't match astronaut birthdates/dates of death, at least not in the Apollo program.

ETA: I also tried natural disasters, looking for an "epic six," but they didn't match up exactly. I tried space program events, but some dates just didn't line up for that either. About the only thing I found to be consistent for those dates were American Civil War battles, but those particular ones were hardly "epic." Also, there were some matches with the US nuclear program.

/speculation because I'm sure we'll get a hint

Looks like there are 4 corrupted binary bits in 6th and 5th line from the bottom: 001100?? 010111?? 110000?? 100000?? tho more eyes checking the better as it's quite late where I'm at. Smile

After removing them the rest of the transmission reads: "but only one has the key."

ETA: the latest update is one word "HISTORY". Maybe the missing 4 letters (tory) from the transmission?

Glad you picked out those broken binary bits (hehe)! I had some idea that something like that was up when one of the websites I tried to use for decoding told me the post wasn't divisible by 8. I just assumed it was an error on my part; I don't know much about such things.

Emailed Lane to inquire on a possible link to relativity (I'm cracking myself up with these tonight--I think that means it's time for bed) and to see if they'd found the source of the oxygen loss. I'd like to avoid making the answer more complicated than it has to be...again.

I also wonder if he's restricted access to the modules for now to ensure that we all communicate on this. I know that aspect was important to him. With the module right there, we have easy access to as many password guesses (educated or otherwise) we want on our own.
