[META/POLL] Did the ARG work? The aim of this ARG, from the author's point of view, is to promote Halo 2. So, I'm curious. Did it work? Are you more likely to buy Halo 2 because of the ARG?

I've had H2 pre-ordered for months now so it doesn't affect my decision. At one point I was seriously pissed off with how this "game" is progressing and thought about cancelling the order in protest. Then I realized it's stupid to deprive myself of what will be a glorious gaming experience because of a poorly planned on-line promotion.

I don't own an Xbox, and I don't have time to play video games anymore, but I do have a lot more interest in Halo. Maybe I'll buy the books.

"poorly planned"? That is only because you are rather unclear on the concept of alternate reality gaming.
and as a game designer mysel (arcade)f, me exceedingly enjoys this. It breaks the boundaries and goes into new directions. it is plucking the heartstrings and emotions of the players. Lots of the regular ARg players came in and are still being thrown off by the new directions. The typical rules of hidden mathematical puzzles on different websites is basically non-applicable all around. The character development and keeping it all in a single website repository with a cast of characters we care about is far deeper than any souped up Castle Wolfenstein 3D graphics engine 2 hack will EVER do for us.

johnny_nitro.... how did you ever find the time fo the ARG? You have been a valuable [SPEC]'r and am grateful you found time to participate... I have little time for video games myself (though I do enjoy them) so I know what you are saying, but looking back over the past few weeks, I am amazed how much more time I have spent on this than I have any video game I ever played.... frightening really.

FWIW, I think I would be more likely to buy Halo 2... except that I don't have a X-box and I don't think I can get that past Budget Control Central (aka the wife ). If it was a PC game, I'd buy it.

I own/have beaten Halo 1, and I was planning to get Halo 2 eventually. I have always been a HUGE Bungie fan; the Marathon series sealed the deal way back in the 90's. However, now I think I will pre-order the special edition version, and possibly get Xbox Live. Of course this is due to peer pressure from people like Mazian and Ceantari who think they can pwn me in multiplayer. We'll see....

I guess. The phone answering thing was old on week two and I think the Tuesday-Friday update thing pretty much kills any momentum the story takes. I imagine it's important for stretching out the length of the game but I hate it, far too rigid for my taste.

Thanks for the kind words Dabo.
I have a low duty cycle at work, and a pretty flexible schedule. I can answer Axons fairly easily because they are within short walking distance from work, and usually occur at times I can leave unnoticed. I don't get the ones after about 05:00 PM (Eastern), though unless it's a special occasion.
As far as spec'cing, I usually do that during lunch or when I get home. I have an 18 month old and Video Games are verbotten due to the imagery. I tried to play Robotron once and the poor boy got very upset.
So, it's slow paced games (Monkey island, H2G2, ARG, etc.) or nothing.
I'm happy to have this outlet.

I think the Tues/Fri update schedule serves an important perpose in that it allows everyone to keep up with the story without chaining themselves to a computer all week. Since the SP puzzles typicaly get solved within a few hours, if the updates came on a more fluid basis many would be denied the chance to participate. The PMs have also shown themselves to have an eye towards maintaining narrative momentum with the capture of SP happening outside the regular schedule.
On topic, this ARG has been my introduction to the Haloverse. I would certainly be picking up H2 if I had an Xbox. As it is, I may well pick one up in November since there will surely be a Halo bundle.

you have to admit, though, live interaction is exhilarating. Plus, the regular schedule helps me plan. (e.g. schedule no meetings on Tuesday's and Fridays)

Well I will be able to pwn you repeatedly, unless you practice practice practice
TBH, I'm looking forward to co-op Halo 2 more than head-to-head.
PS, my special edition is already pre-ordered and I think I might be able to get it after midnight on the morning of Nov 9. Anyone in SF feel like taking a few days off that week and doing some LAN parties?

I don't own an Xbox, so it's unlikely that I'll be getting it. If I ever do pick one up, I'd probably of gotten it anyway. It did however get me to pick up Halo 1 for the PC, so it did do some good. If Halo 2 ever comes out for the PC (unlikely) I'll be sure to get it.

Collector's edition pre-ordered long ago, check.
Day off from work arranged (hey it's my birthday besides), check.
Prepped and ready to camp out for the midnight release, check.
Lanfest set-up at my place (120" HDTV screen, 5.1 surround, leather couches, 6' bean bag), check.
Wireless LIVE connection, check.
15 other guys foaming at the bit to play Halo2 at my place, check.
Yep, I'm ready.

cliam...maybe you should add a couple of categories:
1) Not only am I going to buy Halo 2, I am going to buy an XBox. Just don't tell my wife.
2) I don't own an Xbox, thus I will not buy Halo 2. But this ARG sure makes me wish for one.
3) I don't own an Xbox, thus I will not buy Halo 2. I am interested in HALO, and I will buy the books or PC versions.
4) I don't own an Xbox, thus I will not buy Halo 2. The ARG doesn't change that.
