RS: I think the problem is that some of us have chosen to go behind the curtain, and to converse with Jeff there, OOG. He is obviously open to this, but I get the feeling that things should stay that way. re: If you want to go behind the curtain, go... but don't yell things back into the main room. Let the people out there decide if they want to go behind the curtain themselves. "Permission" seems a clunky way of relaying that, but I think that's what was meant.

Anyway... Jeff has spoken on the matter himself:

I appreciate the fact that you want to share… relevant information from here with the other viewers. However, that's the board for the players of the ARG. Yes, there's an "off-topic" thread, but you don't need to link every post of mine that has to do with the series. Believe me, it's not that important.

The floodgates have been broken. My page has been linked numerous times in the past. If viewers want to see behind the scenes, they know where to look. Thank you, but we don't need another link every page of the main EMH thread, or on the index for that matter, from this point on.

Come here as a friend. I refuse to let this become an OOG Q&A regarding the series. No one wants to see a million responses as my main content on Tumblr.

(And to all of those who don't believe in our little version of Rand's Atlantis… it exists.)

Catfight!

Alright. Let's all calm down and think logically. Everyone enjoys series in their own way. Some prefer increased immersion and don't wish to see any behind the scenes or OOG content. Some enjoy seeing that kind of thing.

The existence of this thread permits each viewer/player to make that choice for themselves. If you choose the prior, you need not open the thread. If you choose the latter, then feel free to look though it.

It's a simply individual choice and I really don't feel like we ought to have drama on this. Don't like, don't read. I just went and re-read the posting guidelines, and despite being offensive to the taste of some users, I don't see any violation of written rules.

As such, the logical choice to me would be to allow this thread to continue to be unimpeded such that all players are free to make the aforementioned choice to look or not look at OOG material. Better to have all these "shouts back to the main room" as Atom says isolated in one place that we can easily avoid if that is our choice.

I can only speak for myself, but I already knew about all this. What I object to is seeing it here, as well as the fact that Phenom is advertising this stuff without Jeff's say-so.

Sorry, why ought Phenom get permission from Jeff to link to his public blog on a public forum again? Check this out. Daily, I check out CNN.com, because I live outside of the United States and I want to know what's happening back home. Know what I do when I see an article that I find interesting and I want to share it with friends? This:

http://edition.cnn.com/

You know what I do not do? I do not send an email requesting permission from Ted Turner. I just link. Because it's a public site containing no sensitive private information. If your criticism of Phenom was that he was posting OOG info in the main IG thread, well congrats, he stopped doing that. But under no circumstances does he need permission. This smacks of the sort of forum group-think that encourages false user hierarchy and internet tough-guyism to breed unchecked.

All of which is to say that it's hilarious to watch self-imposed authority figures throw their weight around as though they have some actual clout, but it sucks to watch somebody who's not doing anything wrong (or is, at best, making the eensiest of faux pas) get shat on by the aforementioned inflated egos.

For someone who initially came in expressing distaste for the symptoms of our Wrong On the Internet Syndrome, you seem to have caught on to the groove pretty well. Also, lacing your arguments with accusing people of being "self-imposed authority figures" and trying to create a "false user hierarchy" not only 1) gives us way too much credit (we couldn't organize our way out of a paper bag) but 2) puts you on the level that you were trying to avoid. If its so hilarious, why are you getting angry instead of just laughing at us? Don't forget yourself and start taking this too seriously. Wink

1. You don't really need organizing power...all you need is to, well, have a consensus of prickiness. For some reason everyone is in agreement with the incorrect hypothesis that there's something horribly wrong with this thread, so everyone feels like it's alright to act like they're in charge.

2. No, that's not how things work. You are allowed to call others self-righteous without being self-righteous yourself. I shouldn't have to say that? I guess I do.

Besides, being a hypocrite doesn't make you wrong.

Now, I perfectly understand the viewpoint everyone has...I just believe it's invalid. I just think that flaming the OP for this is...out of hand.

So, what? Boys will be boys? Just because something is what someone does, doesn't mean that thing is justified.

Personally I think this thread should be more about those topics that are inappropriate for the IG and OT threads. That is, things that a lot of people don't want to see. I don't think it should be analyzing every single post, but more of a discussion about, for example, the 11GB, and other meta, behidn the scenes stuff. This is a totally valid topic and is in the interest of most of the people here. Analyzing every post? Hmm...no.

I didn't realize I was coming off as particularly angry, and if I seemed RAAAAAGE-y, my apologies, not at all my intentions. I am, as you suggested, happy to laugh at you, though, if given the opportunity.

Anyway, as an answer to my initial question, because now I'm legitimately curious: why should anyone get permission from the site-owner before posting a link to their public site?

Eh, no harm done. Wink

Anyway, Child of Atom put it a lot better, but my two cents are: its not Jeff's privacy I'm necessarily concerned about. I agree with you completely that his website is fair game, seeing as how its public. My quibble (and why I got so pissy about Phenom posting OOG stuff in the main thread) is purely about how I like my hobbies mixed. I don't think it's appropriate to post about OOG stuff in an ARG venue.

But then that's not my decision to make. If Phenom had made this thread first instead of stirring shit up by posting in the main thread with the OOG links, I think a lot of this would have been avoided. I'm now content to let the thread run its course.

I agree with Sje46 on how this topic should function. Edit a [META] label to the subject so that people know what they're getting into when they open it and let it serve said purpose. Cool

It's nice to see cooler heads beginning to prevail here.

I think the most amusing and simple use of that extra footage would be an actual EMH exercise DVD, that the in-universe crew would have been putting together as a premium version of their show or something.

Also, since this isn't just for EMH, have yall checked out the Tribe Twelve april fools video? It's pretty good.

Sje, you have sat in Angora chat with me. Do you REALLY think I have any idea or rhyme or reason to what I do?

Hey dudes, I have an idea, let's all get mad about people on the internet! This seems like the most constructive use of our time. Instead of having fun and being considerate human beings towards each other, while still maintaining a sense of intellectual integrity and decorum, let's spend our time going around an ARG site fighting degenerate behaviors, such as idiocy, spamming, adultery, homosexuality and communism.

To be perfectly honest, I'm getting pretty sick of all the out of game stuff being chucked up around here; not only topics like this, but folks going around saying 'oh yeah I talked to Jeff/Noah out of game, they don't like green eggs and ham, Sam I Am'; it's destroying immersion and creating some sort of creepy pecking order of users based on their closeness to the internet famous, which disturbs me. But frankly, if I don't like it, I can step out of the forum for a bit, or just ignore it.

Srsly, chillax guys.

The reason Slick reacted so strongly is that he and I both know that there are, in fact, other authors who would be seen on Jeff's page who use their Tumblrs mostly, if not solely, for communication between other authors and personal friends, with strong overlap between the two. Jeff's privacy is our primary concern, but it's not the only one; we don't know whether those other authors consider their pages really "public."
People *really* need to learn in this day and age that if you don't want shit you post on the Internet to be public, you shouldn't post said shit anywhere that anyone in the world can access without having a password or friending you or something, at the very least. If people get upset because something they posted open and free for the whole world to see ends up getting seen by the whole world, they have only themselves to blame.

I honestly would have thought the terms "OOG" and "Behind the Scenes" would be all the clue anyone needed about the content of this thread. But I guess unForum is way less grown-up than I thought it was. I am disappoint.

Haven't read every post in this thread yet, so maybe opinions changed, but JEEZ, take a chill pill. The thread is titled "OOG/Behind-the-scenes News" for Pete's sake you didn't have to click! He made this so you WOULDN'T have to see, not so you could bash him.

Thank you Phenom, I am enjoying those links.

So, let's continue OOG discussion. Has anybody gotten their Marble Hornets DVD yet? I ordered mine last week, so I'm hoping it's here by friday or so.
