Why do we think Slenderman is The Operator?

The creators said that he is in an interview. Any mention of Slender Man by a fan was replaced with "The Operator" when repeated by them. No one ever really called him the Operator until then. Seems to be one of the few things we know for certain.

But to answer your question, The Operator is a name that the creators of MH gave to him, we know that Slender Man = The Operator.

Ah, heh. I wouldn't really call that conclusive but I guess it makes sense as an argument. I'm still tempted to think Operator=Slender Man because that theory is 100% based on things Troy said and nothing in the series itself, which makes it seem infallible to me. *shrug*
