@mokie I always thought of the mark as multipurpose I mean in The Mystic (the continuation of seeking truth) He mentions proxies using the symbol as something against the protaganists (I.E carving them into peoples chests and then letting them leave alive, but in agony :S )

You're not the only one. Smile But the issue I'm referring to isn't what the mark means within the mythos, but whether the mark itself is a general mythos element or a specifically MH thing.

Obviously some authors do use it as a general mythos thing, and they apply a number of explanations/definitions as suits their needs. For some audience members, though, when you use the Operator symbol you are drawing on, referring to or ripping off MH, because it's a MH thing. By bringing in an element from MH, you're bringing in the mystery of what that symbol means in MH; if MH decides tomorrow it means "Gimme bacon," then that's canon and your story either works with that or doesn't work.

So basically:
#1. Is use of the symbol vital to the story? Are you working in an existing setting with accepted fanon meaning and purpose for the symbol that you will be incorporating? (E.G. It makes servants, in accordance with rules established by blogs X, Y and Z.)
#2. Is there any way you can have the action/function served by the symbol in the story without the symbol? Would removing the symbol strengthen or weaken the story? (E.G. Crazy happens with or without symbol, so it can be removed and would add an element of mystery, vs. The symbol makes the crazy and makes for a vital clue to our Scooby crew, so no, it cannot be removed.)
#3. Is use of the symbol shorthand for "Slenderman was here!" This is lazy storytelling, and the most objectionable part of using the symbol.
#4. Are you willing to maybe lose some audience members who see it and think "Marble Hornets!" If you're OK with that because you're going for folks who share your enthusiasm for, say, The Mystic and its take on things, then go for it. Smile

The one thing that bugs me about blogs the most is that their writing style often doesn't read like someone just keeping journal at the start. Remember that you're not writing book or a story but rather a character's account of what is happening because those read very differently.

Also I tend to get rather annoyed with the "OH SHIT HES OUTSIDE SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!!!!!" style posts because they honestly make no sense. A journal post doesn't convey panic well and it comes off as cheesy as opposed to dramatic. Arrange with a friend to maybe give something to bounce a text log off. Dionaea House used that quite well and it fit because those spastic fits of words fit texting much better than a blog.

As long as you make sure it sounds like a journal and not a story you should be fine.

Most of the improtant things were already mentioned, so I just have to add some minor things:

If you allow people to comment on the blog for interaction, make sure you know how to deal with the "LOL, IT'S SLONDORMON!!" - comments. And if other blogs/vlogs do exist in your universe. If thy don't, prepare some "This video doesn't exist" or "404" screenshots to show that your character isn't able to see what the readers are talking about.

Regarding the Operator sign.. I agree with what has been said before. Try not to use it, if isn't absolutely vital for your story. Imho, the (x) could be easily replaced by any other symbol. For example, I like the way TribeTwelve dealt with the symbol problem. Yes, at the beginning he used the operator sign, too, but later he designed his own symbol, which perfectly fits into his series.
(x) just screams "Hi, this is a Slender Man story!", while a 'personal' symbol makes your story more unique. Maybe take a look at
this, and use one of the established symbols, or use them as a reference for your own.

Just to add: this is only my personal taste, I don't think using the Operator sign will ruin the blog or something. Like you already pointed out, some of the well-known and most favored blogs did use the (x).

I hope I could get my point across, and maybe even be of some help ^^

It still applies. They all have to write scripts.
