That works.

They should head there and look for anything that has Corenthal's name on it -- newspapers, his Ph.D thesis, microfilm, any books he wrote about his work, especially during the listed time period.

Who do we have in Jersey? I can't drive across the bridge, I have no car and I don't know Jersey.

ETA: Okay, on the off-chance it was something at Hopewell Public Library, a couple of us shot off some emails to the boys suggesting they go check it out. If it's a dead end we'll know.

Specifically they should probably look for film, if the label was attached to the negatives, they may have archival/backup copies or even the developed versions on record. I think finding anything like his thesis or newspaper clippings there is a long shot, start with the negatives and spread the search outward from there.

ETA: Can anyone find a model of camera that HPL might reference? HPL, could just be the make of the camera, with the label meaning something like "Film taken by HPL Camera of James Corenthal, film from 1986 and 2005 (or possible, film from 2005 with a camera made in 1986)".

A list I found here, lists HPL as meaning anything:

HPL Hamilton Public Library (Ontario, Canada)

Haha... that's my home city. Which I'm not at at the moment. Almost cried, but yea. I think the Hopewell Public Library is a good place to check out. Also, I know that some libraries have more than books. Maybe some old films? (haha, so not likely)

Edit: Darn it Jsor. >.>

Does it look like there's writing on the front of the canister to anyone else? Just a letter or two, I can't tell if it's just a smudge/scratch/lighting/artifacting issue though.

To put the date in perspective, 1981 is the last Corenthal letter in our possession. Here's some relevant text, given it's the one closest chronologically to this finding:

Quote:
Maybe I'll peruse little Evan's picture diary, but the Good Lord knows that I can barely bring myself to catch a glimpse of his camera, which never fit comfortably in his meek hands.

Quote:
I'd better get to those photographs. (Jeffrey also wrote me a series of short-stories. Vincent and dearest ------ [redacted] were more so visual young artists. I must retrieve my old trunk with their treasures in it soon.)

These may be MT!Evan's pictures, filed (but not taken) in 1984. However, I think I may be grasping at straws with this connection.

My guess: James Corenthal was on the high priority list at a mental hospital between 1984 and 2005 (when he supposedly committed suicide, presumably to escape).

We need to ask the boys when the pictures were taken. Can they identify the years? Are they all ancient photographs, or are some newer? Can they compare the children to the children in the class photo in Jessie's binder?

Also, ask Jeff if HPL could refer to high priority list. Does it look like something that could be part of hospital documentation? He works at a hospital...he should know.

Oh, in case anyone else is confused, we're talking about this: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EjP_L2vmFE7c247lHmJV0qBuao8o14iRjX0aKzpV5xU/edit?hl=en#

Alternately, HPL could be an abbreviation for HosPitaL...

I like the Hopewell Public Library theory, largely because libraries are (with a confederate on the inside) great places to hide things. I poked around in their catalog a little, but I didn't find anything relevant.

The character string itself reminds me of a label you might find on a box in an archives. I didn't see anything on Hopewell's page indicating that they maintain an archives or a special collection, but (OOG) if they have a helper in the library there could be a box being held behind the desk or something.

I'm not so sure there is a box, perhaps there is something hidden between books. I mean most libraries,if you are going with that theory have a system of organization. So maybe the HPL198/2005 is a section of books or a specific book? I mean my library has a system of organization for reference books and the like that have a similar number system for the reference magazines and larger books that have reprints. Etc.

If it's not then it could simply be a clue for high priority list or some other such piece of information.

The metal can. What is it? What is it used for? What was it used for? I'm inclined to think it's a specimen jar of some sort, but it could also be something for a camera. (There are a multitude of cameras with "HPL" in the title.)

That's possible, but the string we have doesn't fit with any of the three major classification schemes, although you wouldn't have much of a problem sticking it on a shelf of a library using Library of Congress classficiation. It looks like HPL, like most public libraries, uses Dewey Decimal, though, so there's really nowhere to put a book with this number.

Some libraries do have newspaper or photo archives. About a year ago I ordered copies of obituaries and articles from a library in Illinois.

Other then that I don't really have anything to contribute at the moment.
