Depends on what you're looking for. If you're after a more individual experience along the lines of what the Jamie Kane experience was, I'd suggest checking out some of the transmedia books out there or some of Fourth Wall Studios/Six to Start's stuff. In that vein, here are the suggestions:
Transmedia Books
-the Cathy's Book trilogy (or ipod touch app, if you have one)
-39 clues
-patrick carman's novels (13 days to midnight just started up, plus there's the skeleton creek series)
-personal effects: dark art

"Replayable" Type ARGs
-Smokescreen
-We Tell Stories
-6 Minutes to Midnight
-Eagle Eye: Freefall
-Kings
-No Mimes Media 10-Minute ARG

For other games, check out the games in News & Rumors, and see if any of the games listed under ARGNet's Now Playing list strike your fancy. Generally, you'll get more one-on-one interaction with the more grassroots games, and encounter more advanced cross-media elements in larger/corporate ARGs although that's not a hard and fast rule. You can also ask people in the IRC channel (#unfiction on the chat-solutions server, which can be accessed at argn.com/chat) for more up-to-date suggestions on what they'd recommend.

Yeah, the idea of an ARG can be really overwhelming when you first start playing. Don't worry about it--we were all there at one point or another. Wink

A great ARG to play if you're just starting out is Jamie Kane, a single-player ARG run by the BBC. It's pretty simple, but it has an engaging story.

You should note that Jamie Kane is a single-player, replayable ARG. In other words, whenever you sign up, it starts at the very beginning. This makes it easy to play.

After you've played Jamie Kane (it takes about two weeks), then you should have a much better idea of what an ARG is. There are a few key differences between Jamie Kane and most ARGs, but rather than confusing yourself with those differences now, you should just play Jamie Kane first.

Welcome to Unfiction! Smile

Thank you very much! You have a very good knowledge.

I figure I'll just post here instead of starting a new thread...

So I started the Becka Belle ARG a few months ago and was loving it (until it abruptly ended) - for a couple weeks I spent hours researching Aztec myths and gods.

Does anyone know of any current games that involve history/mythology/ancient cultures or the like?

@jahila There's an ongoing ARG about a museum that is getting items from the future. It sounds strange, but so far it's awesome! Here is the trailhead:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29949

and you should read this to catch up to the story so far:

EDIT: I can't think too well at 3:40am. Sorry for my choice of words.

I have stumbled across this website and I am very intrigued by this style of online gaming
Could you send me some more information on running games or any ways of getting involved
Also, a list of some on going games I can get started on as a newby.
Thank you kindly!!
(just read through the bioshock ARG- sounds amazing)

Well, the first thing you should do is create an account. Then just take a read through the area marked as "news and rumors" and see what looks like fun for you. If you see something you like, just jump in. Each game is a bit different, and there is alot of information within these forums if you take the time to read through much of it. You should also check the blogs and websites of the players for additional information, games, involvement, etc.

Really, the best way to get into ARGs is to kind of stumble upon one. I KNEW what an ARG was, but it wasn't until I found Jadusable that I really became a player. That being said, it's sometimes best to go through the really popular ones, especially if they're video based. Marble Hornets is easily watched if you archive binge all at once.

Other great Slenderman ARGs, like TribeTwelve and EverymanHYBRID, are more spread out over different media, but are still very enjoyable. I personally find that it's a good idea to keep the fan-made Wikis open in another tab while you're catching up, just to clarify anything you might have missed. Once you're current, you can theorize and RAEG at lack of updates like the rest of us, and that's where the (arguable) fun begins.

Remember; half of what makes an ARG great is their separate communities. be sure to get involved. You're missing out on some awesome people otherwise.

I'm so glad someone else asked this. I got into the Green Lantern (possible) ARG in the N&R pretty easy though, as one noob to another. Pretty low barrier to entry, although I dunno where it's going So that might be worth checking out if you're a comics fan? If you'll excuse me, I'm off to Jamie Kane

EDIT - Which is of course not running because that post is from 2007. If I'm going to fancy myself a detective, I really need to be more observant
