Getting noticed and generally starting.

If you're planning on an everymanHYBRID sort of entry into ARG-dom, where it starts out as something else before being hyjacked by greater powers, how should you start? Should you wait until you have a regular fanbase on the pre-ARG show before going in? Also, any tips on obtaining viewers? an unfiction post is an obviously good way to go, but are there any other ways of getting yourself out there?
