PASSPHRASE PREPARATION FOR NEXT WEEK

Thanks to MadCow for suggesting some advance planning here. We need some volunteers to provide what we threw together on the fly on Tuesday. And we need to avoid having four threads running with piecemeal information if at all possible. Here's what we had that was very useful - who can do it again?

1. Spike info collection - various and sundry kept checking the page for updates and would post in #beekeepers. That was great, and please keep it up, but what we also needed was to cut down on random chat about less important stuff while the hunt was on. That includes the .wav content - even THAT was less important for about 10 hours. Prioritize, gang!

2. #beekeepers: nawoR periodically repeated the current passphrases; we need that to continue whether it's nawoR or someone else. Volunteers?

3. Forums - I started an announcement thread in the Axon Coordination forum and kept updating the first message as the passphrases came up and expired. The format got a little better as the day went on, but can still be improved. I kept the same thing over in the General forum to trump the multiple threads that had started there too. Hopefully we can have just one thread this time.

I can't promise to do this again this Tuesday, so we may need another Mod to do it or I can set up an Announcement in the General Forum for someone else and let them do the main updating there. This requires hovering over chat and the forums for random posts. Volunteers?

4. Phone Resource - pdk provided a really invaluable service by sitting at his computer and watching all the stuff above (and the ilb page) and taking phone calls from axon hunters. This could be a HUGE job and a real commitment is needed - perhaps we could get several shifts of people to volunteer to be at their phone/computer from 6-9, 9-12, 12-3, 3-6 PDT? This is a serious commitment, any volunteers?

5. Live Call Info - Not something anyone needs reminding about but of course axon hunters need the ability to get passphrase information back into this network ASAP - calling the phone team or having a friend ready to post the news in chat.

Feedback in this thread, coordinate and plan here or in chat or offline and then we'll post a new thread with the formal plan. And this whole thing is not carved in stone - if y'all want to do something different or think that some of this wasn't very useful, suggest something else!

Passphrase Coordination

I *might* have off next Tuesday afternoon -- I'll be finding out today, so I'll let you all know after lunch -- in which case I'd be willing to do passphrase coordination by cell phone in the afternoon, if someone else can handle the morning shift.

Any ideas as to how I can get my cell phone number to people who need it without risking mass exposure on the Internet?

Maybe those people who *know* for certain that they're going to be at axons can PM me today or this weekend, and I'll give it to them via that medium?

However, don't do anything yet -- like I said, I have to make sure I'm actually going to be off. Hopefully Her Beeness will be ringing up my cell in the afternoon so I won't have to explain to anyone at work why I suddenly need privacy for a few minutes at a completely random time of day.

The phone thing is a problem - pdk posted a number here, then took it down (by editing his email) afterwards. Another possibility is to tell all interested axon hunters to PM/email you in advance to get the number. That will mean lots of emailing, and even more on Tuesday. We can also put it in the update message being maintained in #beekeepers and of course stop using it as soon as possible, but giving your number out to a lot of people will be an unavoidable part of this task.

So, Phaedra highlights a pretty big potential problem - any volunteer will need to take on this risk. It also militates in favor of only having at most a couple people do this because the fewer numbers get posted the less confusion there will be. And of posting the number no earlier than first thing Tuesday morning (or late Monday night).

Who set up the Axon hotline number on 24 Aug? Can they do it again for this?

Okay, I'll volunteer. Luckily I am a college student and I only have 1 class on Tuesdays (which I can miss for a good cause [cause being axon coordination])
And I may have access to a few solutions.
Mass Text Messaging
Mass phone calls

I work for a company that provides web alerts (work as in intern) but I'm sure I'll be able to convince them (small company) to let me "test" their system. I am going to setup a Gmail account and as soon as we get the next list of coordinates (in advance I hope) People should start emailing that account what times and which coordinates they will be at and their phone numbers. (If I get them to agree I can also do blackberries.)

--Edited for Email--

Also if you would like to help with coordination email me.

It looks like we are taking pics. We may need to transfer these pics rapidly. Maybe this is an opp for our oversease brethren to participate by relaying photos from our phones to a central contact. Those of us witout camera phones will have to make alternative plans. I belive I can shoot another quick video and boradcast it via the wireless connection at the neighboring hotel, but I can't guarentee it.

What do you mean taking pics?

We've been warned to be ready to take pics at the axons.

Updates on the new pages for today here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7104

Broadcast emails are fine, but keep in mind the MOST useful tool may be the ability to have a telephone call with someone on the road. The phone aspect is for those of us who must leave our computers to actually get the axon.

Our focus is the one hour window to confirm the passphrase - this is hard to handle if we have to wait for people to get to computers. SO---

We need the ability for someone to call in a passphrase as soon as it is given so it can be posted as soon as it is created.

We also need someone to answer calls from axon hunters who want to know what the current "live" passphrases are, just before they answer their payphones.

I have access to mass phonecalls. I guess I should have said if I dont get the go ahead from my company (which i almost guarantee will) I'll make the calls manually.

Also. I'll give out my number and people can call me. (not giving out my number right now though)

Excellent!

But the comment re the ability to receive pics from picture phones and get them posted is probably a good one. (Gah, what if we have to do something with THOSE within the hour window?) Volunteers?

Otherwise, hopefully digital cameras will suffice; but picture takers may still need to rush back and upload. And if it's just not possible, I have to say - do what you can. Can't ask any more.

Well we might just have to have them call me and I'll take down their description of the image... And pass it on to everyone else.

First -- all of this is conditional on my having Tuesday afternoon off, which I won't know until after lunch today.

Right. PM/emailing me in advance seems to be the best way to go about it. I plan to stay pretty close to my computer on Tuesday, other than to go get my axon, so I can also update the passphrase/whatever list as people call me.

However, if MadCow has communication abilities that I lack, perhaps I should instead be asking him if there's anything he would like me to do.

EDIT: I have the ability to send and receive pictures by phone, but not to transfer them to a computer. <sigh> So, I can't be much help with coordinating the pictures.

I posted this somewhere else, but clearly this is the place I should of. (Thanks Phaedra for pointing me here.)

I'm not sure this is necessarily the best place to post this but...

I can only imagine that the 'code phrase' will be instituted again in this coming round with the potential for even more challenge (possibly a two code phrases per axon?).

Last week PDk stepped up and gave his number so that the codes could be passed out quickly. I'd like to offer the same service in advance unless he'd like to carry that mantel again. I'll post my number around midnight monday if there are no objections.

PDK, if you want to run this again just say the word, and I'll do what ever I can to help you out.

I have a cell phone that I will only be keeping till the end of this month, so the number being on the web really doesn't matter to me at all. I'm at a computer all day (or have access to one at least) so it would be easy for me to up date phrases when needed.
