[META] I figured out the significance of the Operator symbol I saw a picture of building blueprints in a book, and imagine my surprise when I saw the operator symbol.
I was even more surprised to find out that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the symbol is used to symbolize trees.
.
To be honest, I kinda saw this coming.
Let the arguments begin.

Probably a coincidence, iirc its meant to symbolise a lack of a face.

It's not universally true. That symbol MIGHT mean a tree in landscape drafting, though they usually use more specific symbols for various tree species. It usually means an existing tree that the landscaper is working around.
But keep in mind that there are dozens of styles of drafting. In electrical drafting that symbol means an overhead light fixture. In plumbing drafting it means a shut off valve. In machine drafting it means a placement of a phillips head screw. In circuit drafting it means an item affected by a switch upstream. In theatrical drafting it represents the viewpoint from the extreme seats, or a fixed hanging point in the rigging.... In short... it means a lot of things.

You can tell we've investigated every single possible interpretation of the Operator Symbol here at Crazy Corp. That tree thing's interesting, though.

The Operator symbol is also in the elevator in my college. It stops the elevator.

Well... that and I am occupationally obligated to know some of those meanings.

Slender Man is a elevator. It all makes sense now.

I'm on mobile or I'd post the [smile for the camera] pic. Use your imagination.

I think it's meant to indicate that totheark is a 14th century Catholic who doesn't believe in the number zero.

I see Atom's taking this seriously. As he should.
But I see no one else is.
(Also, I know the mathematical meaning of the "operator symbol", and when you get right down to it, it's not relevant at all. Not to mention that we're all discussing a proper symbol, that of a circle with an X inscribed within it, whereas in /every/ use in Marble Hornets, and every other series it's popped up in, it's not so much "circle with an X inside it", but more "circle that has been crossed out". They're minute differences, but significant.)

I, too, am taking this seriously, Craven (is it okay if I use that nickname [Cougar+Draven]?) Anyways, what IS the mathematical significance of the operator symbol?

No, it isn't okay to use that name. If you must shorten my name, pick one or the other.
And the mathematical significance of the clean symbol is the tensor product . Enjoy the higher-level writing.

I'm inclined to think that any real world significance the Operator Symbol has is a coincidence. It was likely chosen for its being somewhat ominous, and easy to draw.
