[SPEC] Define This

Me and my associate SuperMega have based a good number of our theories on the definitions of the names and titles given to te characters...

We looked up Janissary, the girl's last name. Many of you have seen this definition. It basically means a NEW soldier/sentinal that is the body guard of the emperor of the ottoman empire. We looked up ottoman and found that it expanded all the way into northern africa. That is the location of zanzibar which was specifically hit very hard by the covenant.

The AI construct named "durga" and the boy/man talking to her. The boy names the ai construct Durga. We looked up Durga and found that she is the protector created by the divine powers designed to protect against the intruders.
This could* imply is that the divine powers(the forerunners) created "durga" to protect them(US!) from the intruders(the covenant) by finding something. Remember that "durga" said she likes to find things....

Kamal is an arabic name meaning "perfection".

Yasmine meaning "to be rich", derived from Arabic yasira "to make easy".

Melissa means "Honey Bee".

Herzog is a member of the highest rank of nobility in Germany and Austria, corresponding to the British duke.

Aiden Means "firey one" in celtic.

Apocolypso coming from the word apocolypse, meaning the end of the world. Usually associated with a firey destruction.

Gilly means to transport something.

Kinkle meaning corruption.

Pious Meaning "Deeply religious or spiritualy oriented", and flea being a small, external parasite know for it's size and ability to leap.

Sleeping Princess
. Sleeping implying a comatose, hibernative, or unconsious state. This is very vague towards her position, but when combined with many other SPEC and evidence, we begin to see the emerging idea that the sleeping princess is a dormat protocol/personality inside Melissa, let loose by the crash.

Open to any critisizm.

Looks spot-on, to me.

It's not clear how many of these names have importance in their meaning, but the "Melissa" is probably not a coincidence.

Minor Trout, as this has been done before, but not with some of the newer characters.

Not to criticize, but Janissary is her first name not last...

Something that just needs to be edited.

Trout

Most of this gets a whack with a fish. For example:

Quote:
1. Potnia was a pre-Homeric/Minoan/Mycenaean goddess, one of whose symbols was the bee. Her priestesses were known as Melissas (Melissa means either "bee" or "honey" or possibly both in pre-Homeric Greek -- ).

2. In Indian mythology, Durga is the warrior goddess who slays the evil king Mahishasura, who has usurped the rule of the gods. Despite being a maiden in the myths, she is worshipped as a mother goddess who destroys evil, protects her devotees, and establishes peace and prosperity on earth. However, she is closely associated with Kali, the goddess of destruction, who's not quite so warm and fuzzy.

Quote:
In addition, I am aware of three possible etymologies for the name Kamal. One is Arabic (it means "perfection" or the union of opposites) and the other two are Sanskrit. Kamal can refer to the lotus flower or to the color red. However, given that I am not aware of any Hindu ban specifically on eating pork, I'm guessing he's Muslim.

Please search before posting. Back to you:

Quote:
Yasmine meaning "to be rich", derived from Arabic yasira "to make easy".

Actually, you fell for a faulty etymology on that one. Yasmin is a Persian loan-word to Arabic and refers to (obviously) the jasmine flower. As a loan-word, it has no Arabic etymology.

Quote:
Aiden Means "firey one" in celtic.

It derives from aodh or aed which was the name of several Irish kings and probably meant fire. However, aidan, from aodhan may have had a connotative meaning closer to "rogue" or "rascal."

Quote:
Gilly means to transport something.

Yes, but it's more likely short for "Gillian," which is either a Teutonic word for "girl" or a feminine form of Julius, which probably derives from the Latin family name "Jovilios" (descended from Jove). I doubt that every character's name is supposed to be highly meaningful.

Quote:
Kinkle meaning corruption.

Kinkle doesn't mean "corruption"; it is a corruption – of "kindlein." As a surname, it's probably a corruption of Kunkel.

Quote:
Sleeping Princess. Sleeping implying a comatose, hibernative, or unconsious state. This is very vague towards her position, but when combined with many other SPEC and evidence, we begin to see the emerging idea that the sleeping princess is a dormat protocol/personality inside Melissa, let loose by the crash.

Quote:
3. Sleeping Princess myths are common to almost every culture on earth. Most folklorists agree that they represent the way nature (generally personified as female) goes to "sleep" in the winter and reawakens in the spring. The most obvious example is the myth of Persephone, although that's abduction rather than sleep.

So...how does this apply to our girls?

[SPEC] We've already seen the abduction and rescue of the SP, so she's more or less fulfilled her myths. I wonder if Durga's going to slay something evil. There is an actual woman named "Melissa" in Greek mythology -- a daughter of Melissus, the king of Crete, who nursed the infant Zeus and was later transformed into a bee. So, maybe Melissa will bring something to life (or perhaps she's harboring something -- Kronos wanted to kill Zeus -- the Pious Flea, perhaps?). [/SPEC]

So, again: Trout. Oh well, perhaps the summary you provided will prove useful to someone.

I've been lurking here for quite some time and find the threads very interesting indeed, some fabulous minds here.
I have not registered until today, and may have been content to lurk and learn indefinately, however, after reading this thread (and others) I simply had to post just to say;

Poor guy, he comes up with some good information, and sometimes it seems all we do is whack him with a fish... keep at it Incantatious, sometimes even slightly incorrect information contributes more to the collective then the correct stuff, by bringing up even MORE correct info, like that stuff with Melissa in the Greek mythos... no coincidence that she turns into a bee, the relevance might end there, but it is definitly no coincidence.

Trouting

We whack him, Alex, because he posts his stuff without searching first, without ever acknowledging that it may be trout, as if he's posting his brilliant insights here to aid the poor benighted souls who lack his penetrating intellect.

Which would be annoying, but fine, if it weren't all trout. Arrogance can be disregarded if it's accompanied by an intellect of especial calibre, but in this case, there hasn't been any sign that it is, so if I run across his trout and am not in a particularly forgiving mood, I'm going to whack him with a big, fat ghoti.

If he tones it down and posts something good, I'll respond normally if I have something to say and remain silent if I don't. But in this case, a brief search for, say, "Durga" and "goddess" would have done the trick. Or, a self-deprecating, "Whack me if this is trout, but..."

But it speaks well of you that you demonstrate concern for him.
