Neal Stephenson Knows of Us

Last night I attended the book signing of Neal Stephenson's new title, The System of the World, at the Barnes & Noble at Union Square in NYC. You may know Neal from his other works, such as Snow Crash, The Big U, and ... oh, our bible, Cryptonomicon.

The evening started off with a reading from his new book, followed by a brief Q&A session (No plans for his next book -- might be SciFi, might be nonfiction) and finally the part all of us were waiting for, the signing. In typical NYC fashion the line was formed by those who got up and ran to the front first -- the rest of us, waiting for someone to take order, ended up at the rear. After fifteen minutes of guessing (probably pretty acurately) who was a fan and who already had listings up on Ebay, it was finally just about my turn.

In a moment of inspiration, I remembered that the Baroque Cycle webpage had started off with a puzzle, which is described in detail here: ( http://www.substream.com/crackingthecode.html ) So as he was signing my book, I took the opportunity to mention that there was an active community that was dedicated to solving these sorts of puzzles. When I mentioned Unfiction, he immediately responded with something to the effect of: "Oh, the bees thing! Yeah, I've been following that. Interesting stuff."

So that was the highlight of my evening. If you do read this, Mr. Stephenson, thanks again!

This is very cool indeed. Of course, it's not an entirely unsurprising revelation.

(puts on hat and pulls out pipe, tells children to gather around)

Back in the days of the Beast, I remember being told by someone at Microsoft that they initially approached Neal Stephenson for the position of writer for the game, given his obvious suitability; they wanted an SF writer who was familiar with the internet and the RPG genre. Neal was apparently extremely busy what with writing the Baroque Cycle so he mentioned that his friend Sean Stewart would also be worth talking to... and the rest is history.

For the record (and especially if Neal and/or Sean are reading) while I would count Neal Stephenson as being one of my favorite authors, I don't think that anyone could've done a better job at writing the Beast than Sean.

sorry anthrax

I posted about his book signing in the NYC axon thread. Sorry, I can see now that this was a poor choice.

Anyway, I found that he has a wiki thing that people can post to. He says It is ostensibly about Quicksilver but hopes that it will turn into something more.
