Not every location has the people/axon numbers to have developed such a resource, but where available it's a great idea (I sort of did that for DC while I was trying to keep the forum posts current).

A team can be made up of as little as two people. Someone at the phone, and someone at a computer. They can communicate via phone and relay whatever info is needed.

An easy analogy would be the Master Chief and Cortana. The Master Chief is in the field, gets the work done. He doesn't have time to gather intel, look at maps, etc. Cortana is there to provide instant information to the Master Chief. Waypoints, combat data, communications, etc. When they are working together in synergy, they are unstoppable! Rock On

EDIT-I also think that the thread with the latest relay codes in it that aliendial setup last week was EXTREMELY helpful. I was monitoring IRC all day, but it would be very useful for people that can't sit in chat all day and need a definitive answer. Keeping it synced with what happening live in IRC was awesome.

Okay I'll clear up a few things that might be confusing people. The point of this thread and the reason Phaedra and I are coordinating to be able to contact everyone is. There is likely to be some situtation (similar to the pass phrases this past Tuesday) That is going to require a source that knows whats going on. This is what we are trying to do. If you give us your phone number, email, msn messenger, aim handle whatever... you will be informed Tuesday. Also as you get new information from Melissa in live calls, we will be ready to relay that to everyone else.

I have set up a mailing list for Tuesday.

If you want to PM me your cell phone number and carrier, I will put it on the list.

When a code update occurs, I will send out an email to your phone, and include it.

Don't worry, it will be a moderated list, so that noone can post, except me, and I will try to keep the messages to a minimum.

You may also email me at mjc8804SPLATbjc.org if you wish.

I'm sure that you have thought of this but, in phonescalls, posts, emails,
chat, text messages, voice mail, and everything, please make sure we
get an expiration time for each passcode. Thanks.

Due to work, I'm unfortunatly going to be away from any computer for most of the day. About the only thing I can do to help with communication is to offer up space if we need to upload pictures. I have an anon FTP server set up for elcodora.com with 21M free.

My guess is that melissa will want the pictures taken at axon locations sent to her. Perhaps she will direct crew to where to send it if it is not through dana's gmail account. make sure whomever is gathering the pictures can also send them to melissa and be able to add secret messages if asked.

perhaps the pass phrases will need to be added to the pictures and then sent to melissa. Or perhaps SP's friends would like some well wishes sent with the pictures.

I have suggested hiding the well wishes in the images the camera takes not picture file. that would be easier if transmission is needed.

I'm just hoping she doesn't make us do something crazy like do a dance in public and take pictures of it... and I'm sure that's mild compared to what Melissa can come up with Laughing

The phone updates you're going to do, are they going to be SMS messages or verbal recordings?

This is the awesome part. They are verbal. A computer reads what I type (does a good job)
So this means if you get me your payphone number I could broadcast updates 10 minutes beforehand to it as well.. Just let me know times and numbers.

Re expiration times - the time lags last tuesday made it pretty hard to have definite information, beyond knowing that we had an hour minus the time it took someone to get to a computer to use the passphrase. This time the record keepers should make note of exactly which axon was the live call that generated the passphrase.

Worst case, you go out with a list of current "live" passphrases and start at the top when you get to a phone.

Melissa let Mr. Beefy give an expired passphrase and prompted him to go to the next one, so I don't think that will be an issue.

To quote myself from another thread:

I think teams should still be able to rely on their local axon coordination folks. This can save folks on the road from carrying around 15 phone numbers, esp. if there's a shift change while they are on the road. Let folks sort out locally how they will get information to the forum information collectors.

Updates could come direct to this structure, or they could call their buddy back at work who can speed the info on its way. Whatever works, as long as it is fast.

Certainly. We're not trying to butt in on local teams: we're trying to coordinate between teams and provide resources to those who don't have a team. I rather assumed, in suggesting that we provide a "navigation" resource, etc. that if anyone chose to utilize that resource, it would probably be lone axon hunters, not members of teams.

Quote:
In my mind this is a very simple solution. Create small local teams/squads made up of two components:

1. Axon Hunters. These are the people in the field who are answering the phones.

2. Operators. The online Eyes and Ears of the Axon Hunters in the field. These people are sitting at a computer monitoring the forums or (idealy) in #beekeepers.

The Operators will notify the Axon Hunters when a relay code has changed and what it is, either by phone, voicemail, SMS, etc. The Axon Hunters will call the Operator in their team and relay new codes that they just gave Melissa, or check info that would otherwise need access to a computer (e.g. coords, maps, etc). The Operator will then post to the forum or IRC the new code.

Ideally you would only want one Operator per squad at a time. This will limit the confusion for Axon Hunters as to who to call, and limit trout in the forums and IRC. If more than one person can be Operator, block out times when each person will be the Operator.

A very simple solution. This worked for Team SF (not our official name yet ) last week.

That's wonderful! However, I still think we should implement a plan like the one I outlined above because not everyone has the resources of the lucky Team SF. To cut down on the number of calls, I would love it if this sort of thing could be implemented locally.

I just ask that if you give Melissa a new passphrase, or supply her with the one she's asking for, thereby completing that round of the relay, that you call us ASAP so that people in other locations get the info right away.

Why do I say call rather than just post it yourself? Different teams are likely to have different ways of doing things, so in the interests of cutting down on confusion and having one standardized source that everyone is aware of, I think it would be easier if we had one centralized team providing it.

That's all very nice, and again, I'm not trying to butt in on how local teams operate, just to find a way to coordinate the local teams centrally. The problem with your suggestion is that there are some one-person teams out there. Another problem is that if there are only two people in a location, and they know that Melissa is willing to talk to multiple people per phone call (on ours, Kali and I switched off talking to her) who's going to want to pass up a chance to speak to her live by sitting home at the computer?

I'm trying to accomplish several things here:

1. Provide resources for those who don't have a team, such as on-the-road passphrase updates, assistance finding payphones, etc. Kali and I checked the passphrase before leaving for our axon, but I left work almost an hour before the axon was scheduled. It turned out that by the time Melissa called us, it was expired. If we could have had someone call my cell phone 5-10 minutes before the axon, as Mad Cow has offered to do, that wouldn't have happened. And again, members of two-person teams may not want to sacrifice their chance to speak to Melissa by sitting home watching the computer.

2. Get the new passphrase/information from people who have just talked to Melissa as soon as humanly possible A one-person axon crew may have to drive 45 minutes to get home to their computer and post the new passphrase. That may be too late for some axon hunters.

3. Provide a way for people in non-axonated areas to help out directly.

So, while I'm glad that you've got things worked out to your satisfaction in SF, will you please help us out for the sake of people who lack your resources?

That's one of the things we're trying to accomplish with the different coordinator positions.

How to use the coordination network

(Moderators: Perhaps you could put this somewhere where it is sure to be noticed?)

BEEKEEPERS!

What to do to utilize the coordination network we're setting up.

If you are going to an axon next Tuesday, this information is for you.

1. Send me a PM saying something like "I'm going to be axon-hunting."

I will reply with my cell phone number. If you have a live call with Melissa and either make up a new passphrase OR give her someone else's passphrase to complete the relay, please call me immediately so that I can disseminate the information. I will then post the updated passphrase to the forum and notify Mad Cow and whoever is covering chat.

2. (Optional, depending on how much involvement you want) Include, in the PM:

A. The time of your axon(s);
B. Your phone number;
C. Your name (the name you'll be giving Melissa if you talk to her live);
D. Your rank; and
E. Any other information you deem pertinent

If you do this, Mad Cow will call your cell phone 5-10 minutes before your axon and relay to you the current passphrase(s). I will also keep my voicemail message updated with the most recent passphrases, so if you need to you can call me. Mad Cow and I will be the only ones who know your phone number.

3. (Again, optional depending on how much involvement you want) In the PM, mention if you want navigation assistance. If you want someone to help guide you to your axon, we will provide you with the number of the Navigator and you can call them for help.

4. When we have the Graphics Coordinator duties covered, I will PM you the email/phone number to which you can send your pictures. Please write it down and take it with you so that we can get the pictures and get them to whomever needs them as soon as possible.

5. We will also update the list of passphrases on the forum. But, I strongly suggest that you let Mad Cow call you with the updates unless you have a local team with cell phone contact with someone watching the forum for updates. Kali and I thought we had the most current passphrase from checking the forum before we left work, but by the time we got to the axon it had expired.

We are not trying to interfere with anyone's local teams or coordination. This network is intended to coordinate between teams and axon hunters without teams. If you have a team, we would still appreciate it if you would call Phaedra to update the passphrases as soon as you get off the phone with Melissa so that people waiting for a call can get their updated passphrase, but again, we do not intend to interfere in any way with how your team does things. We're just trying to make sure everyone has easy access to the information. Thank you.

Graphics Coordination

I volunteer to help with coordinating digital photos in the morning through at least 1 or 2 pm on Tuesday. I have a gmail.com email account, so if needed, I could receive up to a GB of graphics. And my gmail username is no where near as hard to figure out as a list of prepositions...HINT...it is the same as my username here....

I also have access to a few gigs of web space, so if posting the pics is necessary I can do that too...

Unfortunately, we really have no way of knowing what exactly we are going to do with these pics. Speculating a little bit...is it really feasible for them to be anything other than things to send Melissa after making the calls? About all I can imagine is that she will ask the person on the phone to do.....something, and then take a photo of that ....something, and email it to her within some minimum time period.

anyone else have a logical guess?
