Subject: Shame On You

Date: 06 May 2003

Dale:

Hey, 'old friend'. Funny thing about all these investigators that you've turned loose in our lives. Things that you say in one place ultimately tend to wind up being repeated all over. So it happens that I've had the opportunity to hear what you said about me last evening. I think it best if I respond to your charges here, since it kills two birds with one stone. First, I know that you'll see what I have to say directly, instead of hearing it second or third hand -- and I think friends owe that to one another, don't you? Second, I know that your investigators have access to your email, so that I can avoid repeating myself to them when the same questions
arise.

The first issue that I've heard about concerns a meeting we had at Klepsydra in mid-March. Frankly, your own words tell the entire story of what really happened, though you can't see it from outside your own perspective. Let me quote you from this chat transcript I have (apologies if anything is inaccurate, but I wasn't there):

'I reached a point where I realized that, no matter how much I believed in my story, no one else ever would. So I decided to do whatever I needed to get out of there and prove I was right. I asked the doctors to call Bruce in for a meeting. . . In a private room, I told him that I had come to my senses . . . and I asked him to get me out of there.'

God, if only you can imagine what that afternoon was like for me. Your mouth was saying one thing, but everything else about you was screaming the opposite. You were sweating profusely, almost feverish, as you rambled. And whenever you started to tell me how you were 'all better', your eyes wandered to the floor, or the ceiling, or anywhere, except direct contact with me. The truth is, Dale, you're an awful liar (a fact that we'll focus on again concerning another issue). I doubt you would have
convinced your little daughter Meaghan with your performance. You certainly didn't convince anyone on staff at the hospital. Before I entered that room, the staff reported to me that you'd had several unpleasant incidents in the couple of days immediately preceding our meeting,
and they certainly didn't think you were anywhere close to cured. Indeed, as you later point out, your ultimate release did not occur because anybody believed you had healed -- it happened because your investigators produced evidence (since thrown into doubt by subsequent events, but evidence nonetheless) that suggested your beliefs
could be truth instead of delusion.

So, yes, I sat there that afternoon, and just like you, told 'my friend' what
he wanted to hear. But it disturbed me, and even sickened me a bit, that you would try to play me like that. I'm not sure what this claim of me not taking subsequent phone calls is about -- unless I seriously misunderstand hospital policy, I can't imagine you had access to a phone to make other calls to me. I certainly kept calling in regularly to get updates on your condition after that, right up until your release. If only you had shown the same concern in responding to my emails and phone calls before and after your commitment perhaps this breach would not be here today.

I'm going to address the other issue in a separate mail, because this is
frustratingly the second time I'm typing this -- the first message seems to have gone unsent.

Bruce

To continue:

Your second set of comments about me astounds me, and offends me to my core. These comments concern the Marzanos, and my alleged relationship with them. Again, I quote you:

'Let me just say this, the Marzano's provided the initial funding for
AnonymousFame, just like Synthasia. And Bruce brought me into AF after it was started.'

Let me be blunt. There is not a word of those two sentences that contains even a germ of truth. And the record of our lives in fact makes your attempted deceptions plain -- like I say, you're a lousy liar. Dale, I don't kid myself about my abilities. I'm a business guy, not a creative person. If you hadn't been on board this company from the beginning, quite frankly there wouldn't have been a product for me to sell. No Dale -- no AnonymousFame. That's why your name is on our articles of incorporation,
right next to mine. My website says it -- Christ, YOUR website says it, in black and white. To claim anything else -- well, it doesn't wash.

Neither does your notion that the Marzanos somehow bankrolled us back then. First of all, I can't recall you asking once in the entire time we worked together where our seed money came from. But surely you haven't forgotten our first year in business? There must have been half a dozen weeks that we weren't sure we could even make payroll,
or had enough in the kitty to buy Xerox paper. We know now all too well what happens when the Marzanos don't get paid money they're owed. But I don't recall anybody getting beaten up, or anyone's family getting threatened, back in the beginning of AFame? You know why, Dale? Because we weren't 'married to the mob', then or now. To me, they've never been more than a client. And for crying out loud, we didn't even do
any work for the Marzanos until over a year after we started -- and you and I pitched the contract together, right there in their construction office.

You want to know the deep, dark secret of AFame's financing? First of all, for the first eighteen months our offices were located on the outskirts of Spanish Harlem, so that we could qualify for an Enterprise Zone grant. Second, when my savings proved a bit short of covering our start-up costs, I did get a private loan -- from my father. And no, investigators, I'm not the secret love child of Don Marzano. My dad, Dr. Edward Abbott, is a math professor (now retired) at Kutztown State. It was one of the proudest days in my life when I was able to pay him back the last of that money,
with interest. Dale, I won't have you sullying that memory by trying to assert that I did what you apparently did to finance Synthasia. If one of the Marzanos told you that when you were negotiating with them, he sold you a bill of goods. If, on the other hand, this is some intuitive leap you made on your own -- shame on you.

If it's really true as you claim that 'until I can sit down and look [me] in
the eyes and ask questions, I'm not taking any chances', I'm right here. Name the time and place -- hell, use 3 or 4 of your investigator friends to act as intermediaries and send me from place to place, so that I can't 'reveal' your location to the Marzanos (like I would ever do that to you). Let's get our cards on the table, and get things cleared up once and for all. You want to be angry that I had you committed, and didn't fall for your transparent recovery, be mad. Yell at me all you like. I'm pretty mad
about my own treatment by you, and the situation that circumstances have left us in. You needed help then; quite frankly it's my opinion that you still do. You need somebody who's going to tell you the truth, instead of pandering to what you want to hear. You need to know that even if you're telling the honest truth, that you still sound to the world like you're crazy. You need to be told that you've made bad decisions, and that you may still be making them (if it's true as I've heard that your last decision to go jaunting off with the guides to Ash Grove Park has resulted in someone else's life being threatened).

First his first letter to Heather was lost, and now the first letter to Dale is lost. He's still having trouble with his email. I think maybe his email program has been "bugged".
