[SEMI-OT QUESTION] Forerunners fate?

Ok, so I am a little behind the times with the whole haloverse back story as I am just now finishing the books. Since there seems to be some serious experts in this forum, I thought I would ask a possibly silly question. Do we know what happened to the forerunners? As I was reading "The Flood," a couple of comments by 343 (quoted below) made me think the forerunners off-ed themselves using the Halo network in containing the Flood. Do we know this is the case?

Bruinbear99

Relevant quotes from "The Flood"

Pg 257 - 343 speaking to MC

"Last time you asked me: if it were my choice, would I do it?" the Monitor continued, as a flock of Sentinels arrayed themselves behind him. "Having had considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed. There is no choice. We must activate the ring."

Pg 237 - again 343 speaking to MC (I am assuming "their" refers to the forerunners)

"The installation was specifically built to study and contain the flood," the machine answered patiently. "Their survival as a race was dependant on it. I am grateful to see that some of them survived to reproduce."

Well, I have even less knowledge of the Halo Backstory than you do, but from what I understand, those very quotes suggest that the Forerunners are the ridiculously distant ancestors of humanity. Some folks have suggested that, instead of "offing" themselves, they set their own evolutionary process on rewind--the Flood need sapient hosts, don't they? So the Forerunners reduced themselves to a non-sapient level. Then, over millions of years, they naturally re-evolved...into us.

The simple answer: we don't know what happened to the Forerunner. All we know about them is that the structures they built and left behind are far older than the Covenant and Human civilizations.

Weeeell, the Forerunner as human theory is just speculation. Speculation with supporting evidence, yes, but still unproven.

Is there confirmed knowledge of how the Forerunner's offed themselves? No, just dust and echoes.

So, really, your guess is probably as good as mine, if not better.

Still, the Halos = gun pointed at the head of the universe. That much power and a race absent without any obvious reason---

It's so tempting to connect the dots, and a simpler answer is generally better.

Still...Halo 2 is a mere month away. And that may change everything.

And some cosmlogists contend that life is the result of Spermagenesis--starting with a seed. Could be that the forerunner activated the Halo, then sent the seeds of life out across the universe to reset the system, and we're just at a point millions of years later.

There's another quote missing from the Monitor - when you're on the PoA again, he says "A reccord of all our lost time together - human history, is it?"

Makes me again think that the forerunners were distinctly human-oid, if not exactly human. As to the Spec they "seeded" the galaxy after using the Halo-network, well, that's a good theorey - and here comes Gabe with some spec that'll blow you away:

What if the Forerunners were actually a caste based system similar to the Covenant as they are now... only the "human" species were dominant, and the races that form the Covenant as they were were lower castes? .. and what if the Forerunners seeded *all* their castes seeds onto compatible planets, in an effort to make sure that everyone survived?

Now heres the kicker. What if the Covenants leadership castes (the Prophets) found information in other Forerunner artifacts that told them that we were once the masters. What if that is the reason they're on their holy crusade to destroy us? What if we were once the masters, but are now the prey?

Wouldn't that be a kicker plot twist?

(and before you kick the obvious flaw - that humans are so far behind the Covenant in terms of technology - it could be the fact that Earth isn't perfectly suited to human development, we could have developed slow, or we could have been sent further and therefore seeded later.. any of those could explain why the Cov have such a high level of tech. The last one, for my money is the best one, the Cov are known to be imitators, not inventors, so if we were seeded away from the remnants of the Forerunner empire, then it'd make sense that we didn't get to copy the Forerunner tech like the Covenant have..)

Forerunners...

That would be a kicker plot twist.

I haven't read the books, but several people have explained the Covenant religion to me, and they told me that (1) the Covenant worship the Forerunners as deities or demi-deities; and (2) the Covenant announced that the gods had ordered them to wipe us out.

Clearly, they don't believe we're Forerunners, or they'd be regarding us as semi-divine.

So, I don't think it's going to happen. But then again, I could be completely off-base and have completely misunderstood what I was told.

Anyone with expertise care to comment?

I have no

Well, sadly, a part of every religion is politics. The religion of the Covenant is no different.

The Flood and the last scene of First Strike each give us a little glance to the government and politics inside the Covenant.

Covenant leadership is divided between two castes, the Prophets and the Elites.

The Elites are responsible for military and war leadership.

The Prophets are the spiritual and domestic leaders of the Covenant.

And the image painted for me by the books is that the Covenant leadership is rife with backstabbing and power politics.

It wouldn't surprise me that the Prophets might set aside their reverance for the Forerunner when they stop being far away and suddenly very close.

The problems for a power mad cleric with having a walking talking god nearby is that it tends to diminish his power.

Personally, I think it could provide interesting plot points. A few Elites realize that the humans are Forerunner. Suddenly they can't serve God and country. Instead, they have to pick one.

It would make for some very interesting politics, especially with the somewhat fractured politics in the humans home court. (*cough*ONI*cough)

It could also be that the Forerunner evolved into beings beyond physical existence, similar to Cortana in Halo's computer network except without limitation to just a Halo.

Perhaps they went Jjaro on us and simply left our galaxy, or better yet, folded out of spacetime. Remember K'lia and the S'pht'Kr.

In the Cortana Letters, she says:

As for this world I encounter new ghosts every day. What I have found
will either save or destroy you. This sanctuary, this unbroken circle,
has effectively concealed its power for how long? Perhaps hundreds of
thousands of years. Whoever made such a place must now live in chains;
there is no other explanation for their absence.

That's true, but the Cortana Letters are on the fringe of what could be considered canon Halo story. The author of the letters had left (or been fired) before Halo even shipped, and there's even been a quote by someone at Bungie (whom I can't find the quote from at the moment) that said that the letters shouldn't be considered official. At the time that the letters were written, it's possible that the Halo story still hadn't been solidified.

I often point out people dont give the Flood enough credit in the storyline. The game is called Halo, and 343 states that the Halo was built to contain and monitor the Flood. It would be safe to assume they play a fairly significant part in the history of the Forerunner.

Another 343 quote talks something about the survival of the creatures who built the Halo was dependant on the survival of the Flood. I have always been curious about why.
