Melissa wants her crew to bring cameras?

Looking at the recipe5 page right now, Melissa is requesting her that her crew "arrive at these axons with digital imaging capability". This is almost certainly related to the secret messages requested by the SP, which she suggests hiding in images.

If this is the case, then the crew must determine:

1.) Are we going to wait until Tuesday to see what the SP wants exactly?
2.) If not, should some crewmembers collaborate to arrange a sign or symbol within their photographs that the SP will recognize (such as a red balloon)?
3.) What about crewmembers who don't possess digital cameras? Surely they won't be discharged for failing to follow the Op's instructions...

The exact quote:

So it sounds like she's encouraging us to take group photos. Very cool! As if it weren't bad enough that she posted me singing for the whole world to hear...now she wants us to post our ugly mugs up. Ah, well -- infamy is as good as fame, right?

As for the red balloon...that's an excellent idea. Melissa may wonder what's up, but I'm willing to lose crewman status. She doesn't have my phone # right anyway, so I've very little to lose. Wink

Those who don't? Well, she does say "should" and not "are ordered to" or anything like that...I'm betting that it's optional. I'm going to bring one, anyway, but just because it's a fun idea. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of famous characters like hmrpita, weephun, Adam, and the rest.

I'm willing to bet that it's another form of field test... in other words, somehow the people answering phones will be required to take a picture, maybe of something Melissa describes, then the picture will be required to be passed on. To whom? Don't know... but very likely someone will have to send the picture to Melissa - either a non-axon hunter, or maybe there's need to be something in the picture that the next live answerer will need to know to tell Melissa in order to unlock the axon. In other words, a visual 'passcode' - person 1 takes the picture, coordinate so that either the next live answerer can pass on the 'code', or someone else with internet access passes the image on the Melissa in order to unlock the clip.

As for Sleeping Princess, she didn't ask for anything in particular, just a hidden image, like she gives us, so that she knows we're still her friends and can trust us.

I vote for an image of a red balloon inserted (binarically, not steganographically) into at least one of the 'crew' axon photos sent to Melissa. Although, somehow we'd have to send the original and the altered versions of the photos... what excuse would we use to tell Melissa to ignore that suspiciousness of sending a picture twice? hm...

problem quite interesting

Just a suggestion... send the file with the insert first, then wait a few minutes and send the unaltered file, with a message attached about "corrupted images" and "unreliable technology".

Either that, or different individuals send different versions of the images, "just to make sure they get through".

Very interesting, Bruce.

People have been pretty quick to assume the Op will want pictures of her crew to plaster on the 404 page just like samples of their singing abilities. But even if that is the case, I suspect there will be some added twist.

And unfortunately, SP doesn't normally give immediate responses when we interact with her.. and that will make fulfilling her ambiguous request all the more difficult.

Unfortunately, we actually have no idea what they're going to ask us to do, so we're just trying to form a coordination structure that can react.

As I've mentioned in other threads, we're trying to set it up over in Axon Coordination à PASSPHRASE PREPARATION FOR NEXT WEEK, so if you can volunteer, please join us.

Balloons

So, I had an idea to make red bee balloons for the photos on Tuesday since SP specifically requested her friends show her a sign. Of course, only having 4 days to come up with them is not easy.

There really is no way to get custom printed balloons that quickly.

So, Plan B was to get red balloons and print up some new bee stickers to stick on the inflated balloons. But there aren't many good stickers that would work for this. Standard avery labels worked fine for the payphone stickers, but I don't know how well they would work on a balloon....Also, they really only come with a white background, so to get a full bleed would require a lot of scissor work. I was hoping to find clear stickers, but the only ones I could find are window stickers, and they use static to stick. I don't know if that will work on a balloon. I honestly don't know how any of it will work on a balloon.

So. Any ideas? Anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? Anyone going to be experimenting tomorrow like me?

You could always print up and cut out a stencil then paint it on the balloon using that. Would be easier than getting any kind of label to stick.

Paint!

PAINT??!?!! What is this, the 1400s? Who do I look like, Leonardo Da Vinci???

Seriously though....great idea. I always forget about the non-computer methods of doing things. Geek heh. Now to experiment with balloons and paint...

just cause I'm lazy and haven't really read the thread...

has anyone thought, what if we're sending her images (via a system introduced to us on Tuesday) and SHE'S altering them and sending them back / posting them, for us to find differences in.

No problem, Mr Da Vinci. Don't forget that you can use air from your lungs to inflate the balloons, rather than using all those computer controlled pumps.

1) Felt-tipped markers? Attempting to draw HitsHerMark's cafepress bee?
2) Although balloons are great for static, I'm not sure if window stickers and balloons would work together. Maybe if you charged the balloon on your sweater first, and the sticker was neutrally charged.
3) Which email is Melissa reading? Would it make sense to send embedded text/URLs to the SP/hotmail account and the crew photos to the gmail account, and never the twain shall meet?

A couple of things:
1. The first "challenge" was to make up a passphrase. Perhaps this week's challenge will be to describe a member of the crew from the group photo.
E.g. "What color shirt is Lt. Weephun wearing" or " Is hitshermark smiling?"
To do this, she would need access to the photos, so they would have to be emailed to her with some sort of passcode in the subject to differentiate them from all the "OMGWTFBBQ Dana is H07777!!111!" types of messages.

2. Why can't we use stego to send the pictures to the SP. We send the pic to Melissa in Dana's email, then the stego password to SP at the ladybee777 email.

Passphrases are one thing, but this new round, depending on the challenge given us, requires a certain amount of technology that is a luxury for many, many people.

I have as little idea as anyone how this is all going to play out tomorrow, but I feel sort of uncomfortable with the challenge, and slightly irritated. I hope to be proven completely irrational and overly worried about nothing. I just think about all the people who are spending bus fare to get to certain phones, and gas money, and who carve significant chunks of time out of their day to get to a payphone that may or may not be a live call (and may or may not even work!), and then, to have some insane A.I. hang up on them because they don't have Bluetooth or a handy laptop or a swank cellphone in order to process/complete/create a relay sequence. Y'know?

There, I said it.

That said, the coordination efforts I've seen by our very own beekeepers in the last few days have been pretty awesome!

Depending on the timeframe, you don't necessarily need a fancy digital camera. Just take pictures with whatever camera you happen to have, and most developers have the ability to either give you a CD or post the pictures online. Within 24 hrs, Melissa could have an image from any sort of camera. I can't imagine her expecting any sort of image feedback during the call. I guess being an AI from the future, though, she might have pretty high technological expectations. I guess we'll just have to see.
