<wierd event> bufferOverFlow.ppt

This is really strange. Ok. I am new to this, and really don't know if this is going to be of interest, but dang, if it aint wierd to me. So, I was interested in ARG while browsing wikipedia, and saw it, and got really into the idea of this type of 'game'. So, I might be just thinking in this newer state of mind, and seeing to deeply into things. But what the heck. Figured would just check this with ya'll on the forum.. Ok. So I am in firefox, and I have just wiped everything (don't ask, paranoia), and I am in a completely fresh browser. So I am trying to sign into an account, and I by accident throw the user name into the top of my browser. And my dl manager starts to grab the file. bufferoverflow. So I try it again, and get the same thing. Now, I am pretty tech saavy most of the time, and I really can't see how this could really work, someone getting deep and and changing things round like this. But it's not beyoind anything I ever heard of. SO I go to check this file out, and I gotta say, wierd thing to have just jump at me like it did. I grabbed the adress, as well as the file. I figured I would post it on here (No, I am not trying to start a game, I would like to have a chance to play one first)... And see what anyone here thought. Also, to be able to enter a user name ale-ph-1(sh) btw, and get a file to dl and open up in the right program is more then a bit freaky. I have been able to have this happen in firefox again and again... So, I don't know.. Maybe someone else can verify this for me as well? Anyways.. Here's the link

http://www.cs.wright.edu/~pmateti/InternetSecurity/Lectures/BufferOverflow/bufferOverFlow.ppt

I don't know wether you want to download the file directly...

thanks

Daem

yeah, same thing happens to me if I paste that in there. from what I can tell, pasteing a word in the firefox address bar just pulls up the first link from google. it just so happens the first thing to come up for that combination is a powerpoint file.

weird, but not much. (it would of been better if it was a trailhead IMO Very Happy )

wait what happened now? I'm confused.

You just typed your username into the URL bar and that file opened?

I can't make that happen. Weird.

This might be better placed in TimeWasters.

Take a look in Firefox help.

Heh, sounds to me like you're ready to get into an ARG, as most of us feel foolish most of the time around here.

If you go up one level of that link (ie, remove the bufferoverflow.ppt part), you'll see it was an example file in a lecture about how easy it is to abuse security holes using buffer overflow.

Nice

Buffer Overflows are a pretty cool topic. I'm a computer science student, so naturally I was drawn to this thread. In a nutshell, a buffer overflow is a way to exploit badly written programs in order to run arbitrary code (usually to get root access to that machine). If you freaked out when you saw the C and ASM code, don't worry. Most comp-sci students I know freak out too. If you want a really in-depth discussion on this topic (you as in anyone), go check out Aleph One's article on Phrack entitled "Smashing the Stack for Fun and for Profit": http://www.phrack.org/show.php?p=49&a=14
