^I think it could be a matter of emotional 'charge'.

Masky didn't cause distortion in 18, but he very well could have been trying to scare Jay away instead of attacking him.
He caused distortion in 19, when he appeared in Jay's bedroom (which he had to have teleported/used magic doors since Jay blocked his front door), but that could be because he was carefully protecting Jay.
In 35, he caused a significant amount of distortion, but emotional charge could have been present as he tried to attack Alex.

Jessica caused distortion when she talks to Jay when he gets grocieries (30 I think). This could be because she knows he's lying, or that she is lying.
She also causes a lot of distortion in 32, when there is high emotions from both of them.

Going on this theory, the emotional charge of both Jay and Alex could have casued the distortion in 35.

While that doesn't explain why Hoody causes distortion, if you assume he's TTA, he may very well have the kind of powers that I mentioned earlier.

TTA can mess with anything Jay has, somehow, someway. There's some superpower oogly-booglyness going on.

TTA has been confirmed for:
-'Hacking' the youtube account on at least one occasion
-Subduing Jay and holding him hostage as the Operator passes him by
-Having access to footage he's not supposed to be able to have (assuming he isn't the owner of some of those videos)

TTA has all BUT been confirmed for:
-Hacking the YT account twice (###### and enttry ##37)
-Hacking the twitter account
-Moving/Teleporting Jay to the woods

Assuming Hoody is TTA, he has also
-Unlocked Jay's car magically
-Moved through the woods faster by walking, than Jay who was running
-Caused audio distortion upon being seen
-Caused visual and audio distortion when seen from the back of Jay's car (assuming that was Hoody)

Unfortunately, some of those points miiight not be true.

First off, Jay's car might have been left unlocked, unless I'm forgetting that we saw him lock it.

Second, we don't know why it took Jay so long, but if you apply Occam's Razor--that the most simple answer is the answer--he logically just got turned around, seeing as he was in unfamiliar woods. ToTheArk likely knows more about them than Jay, as it was Jay's first time there.

Also, when did he subdue Jay for the Operator to pass? I don't recall.

Yeah... I don't think Occam's Razor applies to eldritch abominations.

As for that last part, Jay's sitting in a corner when the Operator passes him in Return. Although, it seems like more of a Slendy-Trance than TTA subduing him. Then again, it is TTA's channel. Honestly, I don't really understand the hows or whys of that video, specifically.

I don't think it could be an emotional charge.
If we reverse the emotional charge back to the source then this would mean that The Operator has emotions. To be honest this opens up too many weaknesses for it. However, there is nothing going against it since the root cause of the distortion is unknown. Also, it's less creepy to think that The Operator can feel anything at all.

Second, buildings/areas(parts of Rosswood Park/the broken down house) give off the distortion as well and I'm pretty sure they don't feel anything.

The point was that he can INDUCE emotional charges, not have them himself.

In ARGs, almost everything happens for a reason. Jay made it perfectly clear that he hardly ever forgets to lock his car and that it should have been locked.

I think the distortion may be the result of when The Operator does something to someone that ultimately causes them to turn into some masky/totheark-like figure. Whether or not this is brainwashing or some other type of mind-messery, and whether or not The Operator does this on purpose I don't believe is necessary to specify for the theory to work. However, I believe this because Jay and Alex, each very much so plagued by The Operator, have basically never been proven to be the cause of distortion, while Timasky has always caused distortion besides perhaps Entry #18. Notably, Tim has also caused it when particularly slender sick in Entry #20, but was shown to not cause slender sickness chronologically afterwards (Entry #9, Entry #15,) similar to Jessica (Although I did not notice slender sickness at the time Jessica caused distortion, her distortion causing was on and off.) Hoody also has caused it, another masky/totheark like figure.

Lowly newbie posting here. I've been lurking for the last month or so getting my Marble Hornets fix during the times that there's no new video.
Something that I don't believe was mentioned yet in this thread (and if it has, then I have no excuse for not noticing as I at least skimmed every page) is, at the very end of Memories, when the two lights turn a bit, there's a bit of extra lit-up area that makes the image almost look like a pair of hands holding onto binoculars; with the lights being the lenses.
Now, of course, binocular lenses don't glow like that but I wonder if that was done to make them more obvious. I could be totally wrong but I'm gonna go check again and see if I can get a good shot of what I think I'm seeing.

EDIT:

Never mind, those are definitely too far apart to be binocular lenses. But I still can't help but see the vague image of hands grabbing around the lights in those grey blobs.

I think your all looking a bit too far into the whole 'lights' thing. To me they are just 2 eyes, doesn't matter how they where made really.

However if the grey area is significant they might as well be tears, but it doens't seem important to me

You're not the first to suggest this, and you won't be the last. The general idea of this progression seems to be:
Operator Stalked-> Cause Distortion-> Go Crazy-> Buy/Modify Mask-> Stalk Jay

My issue: It doesn't take into account the person we have the most history of Operator stalking. Alex! He to our knowledge has never taken up a mask, gone more crazy than irritability, and seems to have avoided Jay during the first season (although his cryptic, incomplete comment on Jay not being "very hard to find" is troubling...). The point here is that unless the Operator picked a primary target that is immune to his powers... yeah. The "Masky disease" theory fails to account for Alex's current mental state as of the tapes.

I'm a little less worried about that comment now, since we have confirmation that Alex was the one who sent Jay the tape from Entry #26. I'm assuming (possibly foolishly) that his comment re: Jay's availability is directly related to him being able to send him the tape.

Although if it does turn out to be something more sinister, that will be some epic stuff.

I respectfully disagree.... I think we should totally be worried about Alex. His whole demeanor is really sinister i.e: leading Jay into the woods with a creepy story, and hello ROCK SMASH. And if Jay has been trying to avoid stalkers (Masky, TTA) how did Alex find him? Why was it so easy? I think Alex is seriously suspicious.

Legitimate point in a pseudo-OOG way. However, it's not as though Jay never forgets anything, either. Either Jay is saying "No, my door was definitely locked", or he's showing us that his mind keeps slipping more and more.

I think that this is a very, very good point, right there. Especially with his latest tweet about it getting hard to keep the hard drive and tapes apart.

See, this tweet really just made me think that J's becoming a less and less viable narrator, because the new entry probably will be several (perhaps not related) chunks of video edited together to make us think ONE thing, but will really be about something else.

So did J leave his car unlocked? Probably. Isn't there footage of him getting out of the car? He says he has a remote -- so there should be a locking sound or a beep when he gets out of the car. Did he even try to unlock the car with the remote in the first place? I remember him just opening the door, myself. Most people use their remote to find their car in a busy parking lot because when you push the unlock button the headlights flash, and there's usually a blip or beep of some kind.

We haven't seen Hoody do ANYTHING even remotely "superpower-y", so why would you think he can magically unlock doors (what is he? a walking EMP?) and as he carries the camera about back to the car (via a more direct route than J, who probably ran about screaming in every direction, Scooby-Doo style -- I know I would if Slendy was behind me somewhere) with relatively little trouble or distortion. He appears to not "zap" the door open with some sort of focus of power, nor do you hear a blip or beep from the car of him unlocking the doors via a duplicate remote of some sort so... I'm gonna go with the most obvious and simple answer:

J is losing his frickin' marbles, and we can't trust a thing he says because his perception of reality and truth is compromised.

AGREE! Jay is becoming unreliable. Not only with the car being unlocked business but his total lack of reaction of his camera being returned to his car. He knows he friggin dropped at the chimney tree- and now it's back in his car, and he just says "huh."
