An idea behind Slenderman's motive.
Possibly an old idea, but it just came to me.

Anyone notice one common theme throughout this whole series?

A lack of memories.

What is one thing that can take the place of memories when you lose them?

Recorded evidence.

My theory is, Slenderman is doing what he does - stalking, tormenting, infecting, kidnapping, whatever it is he's up to - because he wipes his victims memory after they encounter him, but this time, he's been caught on film, so it doesn't matter how many memories he wipes, evidence of his existence (and possibly his crimes) is still around.

Could also potentially explain the constant distortion that marks his presence - That distortion isn't a passive warning a'la silent hill, it's actually Slendy's attempt to destroy the evidence that he exists, assaulting the film with pysionic energy or whatnot to interfere with the transmission.

Going off on a tangent, also possibly explains TiMasky's constant attachment to his creepily adorable facemask - perhaps the mask stops his memories being wiped, but as such, being burdened by memories of whatever it is Slenderman does could be an explanation for his jittery quasi-insane nature, and why he is so involved with all this.

Again, probably already been thought up, but there you go

That is a very good possible theory.

However, why does it distort with other people, not just the Operator?
Also, I think Masky just uses his mask to hide; I know there is a theory that the pills TiMasky takes could be seizure medicine, which affect memory. Which could mean that he still can remember encounters with the Operator...

My suggestion for the distortion with other people is that where distortion is = where Slendy is. He may not be in the actual frame, but if there's distortion, he's around and trying to mess with the video feed.

Distorting over other people could be a way of covering his tracks - He wouldn't just cover up his own actions, if he's smart he'd cover up anything even remotly related to him, other people included.

I kinda like this theory because it ties in with the theory of the Ark= the first initial footage of the Operator. Very interesting...

But why would Masky want Jay to "lead him to the ark" when he could just look up the video on YouTube?

Or maybe he meant for Jay to lead him to the videos. And that's why he ambushed Jay in the hotel, to steal the tapes? *shrugs*

Why would The Operator go through the process of using proxies?
That's just getting and keeping more people involved even when they don't want to be, which could also lead to more exposure.

Also, The Operator has had multiple opportunities to take out J, Alex, Tim, etc. If he was truly trying to cover up his motives I figure he would use his vast resources to wipe the slate clean and continue to do whatever it is he does.

In addendum, within the verse of MH, J has been posting these videos which thousands of people would see, which would not be part of his whole plan. The Operator is not Lovecraftian...the more you know doesn't necessarily mean you are going to disappear off the face of the Earth never to be seen again.

I would assume that after seeing something terrifying on film you might hide it and/or forget where you put it. Masky might know about the "ark" and try to have Jay lead him so he can destroy it???

Perhaps Slendy simply lacks the capability to cause physical damage and death? I mean, think about it, what have we actually seen the operator do beyond just... stand there? He doesn't exactly look like something that could rip you limb from limb, and everything he has actually done to effect people seems to be on some kind of psychic and possibly biological level. Slendy hasn't lifted a finger, but he's been able to completely destroy digital recordings, alter memories and inflict some kind of non-fatal but crippling illness on those around him.

My theory is that while Slendy can destroy non-physical things like digital information and memory, he can't actually cause physical harm. Going on this, he would have to use proxies to do physical harm for him. Going with the theory that TiMasky is actually a servant of Slendy rather than someone who opposes him then his attack on Alex with the switchblade could be evidence of this theory.

On top of that, the Operator seems to have a very high intelligence, so it's possible he's trying to poison people against eachother and make them wipe eachother out. After all, look at the relationship between all the characters from the start of MH to now - Tim, Alex, Jay and as we now know, Jessica, all used to be close friends at the start, now? Jay and Alex are shaky at best, Jessica doesn't even remember Jay and Tim has flat out tried to murder Alex (and in turn, had his leg broken by Alex).

Assuming the Operator can't do physical harm but has the ability to make people destroy other people, his plan actually seems to be working.

Once it's done? He would be in the clear, more or less.

YouTube, however, seems to be a bit different, see, Slenderman is intelligent, but not in the way of humans. I don't even know if he is aware that the internet exists, let alone that evidence of him his so readily pasted all over it. His focus is on Jay, Alex and the other crew members if MH because he witnessed them up close and personal, so to speak..

Well a few things. Alex has a head full of blood after The Operator walks through his room...and seemingly attacks Seth and J at one point. Plus someone was coughing up blood in that house which I think construes an image of something being harmful...(also the blood with the clothing in 29 suggest something got messed up pretty bad and I'm assuming The Operator did it).

As well they sort of stick to some Slender mythos motifs that suggest he kills people. When J interviewed Tim in 15, Tim said that Brian was noticing more and more dead animals appearing around his house, something the Slender Man has been known to do and would therefore indicate that there is more physical harm. Plus the seeming origin story when Alex and J are in the woods suggest that The Operator tortured the men tied to the trees.

It's just that TTA has never put any physical harm on J or anyone else so far that we've seen. Tim has definitely been violent, but it's pretty much only Tim. Jessica also hasn't shown any signs of violence towards anyone yet and she is most likely a proxy as well.

I'll agree with you that he is highly intelligent, though it is seemingly in a super convoluted way at this point only because I have no idea wth is going on and what his plans are...
The relationships between the characters is getting very complex...I think general discord and negativity is one of the many things of being with The Operators presence, not a deliberate tool exactly to divide people moreso he is so evil that he just permeates that and humans react accordingly.

It just seems like that it would make The Operator less scary and evil and manipulative. I mean, going by what you say it's hey I get to have this annoying cough for a while and some of my closest friends might try and kill and mislead me. That doesn't seem anywhere near as terrifying as some incredible other dimensional evil that is manipulating you to some unknown end...
Plus it just makes The Operator seem a lot more useless...

I mean let me give an example... it's like running into some big animal out on a trail for the first time. Yeah it might look fierce and it might be able to kill you but there's a chance it'll go away or that while it might act defensively you'll be ok. And the more times you come across it you're ok and you realize that both you and he are pretty much in the same area and that it's likely you'll bump into one again, so it's like eh ok not so worried.
HOWEVER, I would like to compare him to being in the depths of the ocean and encountering a giant squid. You're in its domain once it has an interest in you(not saying that it would want to go after a human but they seem to be pretty aggressive so...) You're going to be freaked out because there is going to be little you can do against this gargantuan alien being that is going to make you suffer should it choose to. An overwhelming sense of powerlessness and fear before this monster...which I think fits Slendy a lot better :p

You used squid because of the tentacles right?

After reading the OP, I just came up with what I think is the most legit theory I've come up with in years.

The reason The Operator is doing all of this is because he doesn't want to be known.

He's out for revenge.

I believe that the Operator, before being caught on camera by Alex, was simply stalking him to try to kill him as he does with a lot of children. Now, whether Slendy was actually there during Alex's bday all those years ago or was edited in later afterward seems to be still unknown, but basically it doesn't matter.

Slendy was fine killing people without being known aside from occasional pictures here and there. But now, Alex and now Jay has caught him on camera and shown him to the entire world. He is now angry. The Operator has figured out that he has been found out, and is now using Alex's GF as bait to get Alex to trick Jay into coming with the Operator.

The plot twist is that the Operator is no longer after Alex: he's after Jay. And after Entry 40, he now knows who Jay is, and he is going get him for revealing him to all those millions of Youtubers.

Just a thought. Smile

My own theory at this point is that the Operator is a sort of memory vampire; the memory loss isn't a mere side-effect of encountering the guy, or even a weapon, but the result of his feeding on you.

Another theory I have is based on his two most recent appearances in Season Two - in both of which you can sort of see the outline of a face on his head, where in season one you never saw anything of the kind, and nor did you see any such thing in entry 37.

Why the change? Sure, "better costume" might be the reason, but if Troy and the gang have better funds for costuming and end up with something which looks clearly and noticeably less faceless than that's either pathetic or deliberate, and they're too damn skilled in every other respect to make me think it's not deliberate. I think the Operator is physically changing over the course of the series to look more human - that the memories/chunks of soul/delicious ass/whatever that the Operator is taking from his victims is being used to craft a more perfect disguise.

And the end goal? A disguise so perfect the Operator can walk about openly amongst us without attracting any attention whatsoever, even from do-gooder film students with cameras.

I agree. That was briefly mentioned in the Entry #43 thread, about him slowly gaining features...
That would definitely be a good motive for him. Easily to snack on children was well.

The whole theme of MH is lost memories and I think it would make Slenderman a definite Eldritch Abomination if memory lost was just a result of his presence/feeding instead of his main intention.
