[META] Article suggests Halo 4? Jane linked to it on twitta!
http://www.devicemag.com/2011/06/28/new-alternate-reality-game-halo-4-related/
Quote:
At Microsoft's press conference rumors circulated around that they were giving out motorized ice flies. Which may be relevant to "Mission Ice Fly." When the clock reaches "0″, something else will happen. It's unknown what will happen, but we can't wait to see.
Here's another thing:
If you go to http://www.missionicefly.com/ and click on the box under the TEST SUBJECTS NEEDED NOW link, it sends you to this youtube video:
YouTube: Link
called Mission Icefly v2.
At the end of this video is a guy and some distortion.
What do you think?
I might capture it when I'm at work and see what I can figure out.[/url]

I know about TSN possibly being related to halo 4, and I went to ilovebees yesterday to check it out, and saw the timer. I was not there when the game happened, so I assumed it was part of the old game. But now I know I am not insane!

When I go to ilovebees.com, I don't see any countdown at all, but that might be a firefox artifact. Other people have been telling me that the countdown still says about five years, same as it always has.
Honestly, though, I would not expect "I Love Bees" as such to resurrect itself and appear on the same website... and in fact that might make me a little sad, as it's a little bit of history, as it is. Everything new is on the test subjects needed website.
So far as I can tell, the -only- thing I've seen so far that relates this to Microsoft is that article. If you google icefly microsoft you mostly get links from the past two days (AKA after that article). I haven't mined it further though to see if someone outside that article references icefly and microsoft together.

This is as much about Halo 4 as it is about The Dark Knight Rises.
Everything about this ARG is thematic of 5 Gum, from Test Subjects (Like in their commercials.) to a 5 theme, to the ads that point to Test Subjects Needed mostly all being for 5 Gum.
People assume ilovebees because of the way they handed out envelopes at E3 this year with the Ice Fly on the back. While I do think they were trying to round up players from ilovebees just as they were trying to round up players from The Dark Knight by running most of their first stream of ads in DC comics the week after The Dark Knight Rises started their "viral."
Now is Halo being part of this possible? Well, anything is possible, but don't assume as much, because nothing directly links the two at this point. It has even been stated on Halo's forums they had nothing to do with it.
Yep, this is for 5Gum. Is it possible there is something else involved. Yes, but as of now there is no evidence for that. Also, wrigley is no stranger to viral marketing.

Anyway, I wouldn't shy away just cause no Halo or Batman are involved. This is already looking to be a ton of fun if anything else like what happened at Bonaroo happens.

I have to say I think you're right, Aesculapius. Now I want to dig into this article - who wrote it, and why did they link it to Halo? Or are they not the beginning of this?

Halo probably just seemed like the most obvious choice. I believe TDK's viral had already begun by the time TSN/MIF was really out there.
Sadly, I doubt there will be anything too extensive for Halo 4, as it's a new developer who should be more focused on making an awesome final installment instead of advertising it before they've even begun.
As a side note, that 5 Gum advertising short was really cool. I had no idea about the stuff going on in South Africa with the building projections. They sure know how to advertise, but...well, the gum isn't all that great. =_=

It was stated on a Bungie forum that they have nothing to do with this. Which does nothing to prove/disprove this is Halo 4 related because Bungie is no longer involved with the Halo universe.
I still think 5Gum is just a sponsor partner in this and it'll be related to something other than simply gum. Wait and see as always.

Halo 4 was announced at E3 this year. TSN envelopes were handed out this year at E3 with the IceFly logo on it. The gamer culture at E3 saw this and thought "Oooh! Ilovebees2!" Since 42E did Ilovebees as well, that is how people connected this ARG to Halo 4. So more or less the Halo 4 rumors started popping up at E3.
Edit: There has been nothing at all to directly link the two. Bungie denying any knowledge of it is evidence against, while not proof. This is very thematic of 5 Gums advertizing so far and has turned up in 5 Gum ads.

Can we please stop talking about Bungie in regards to Halo 4 speculation. They are not involved in its development and are not qualified to comment on any possible connection to TSN or MIF.

It's evidence against. It's their character and they probably would have heard SOMETHING about a viral from their former coworkers.
Believe what you want, though.

"Probably" is basically speculation to support further speculation.
Fact of the matter is, Microsoft owns 100% of the character and universe now, Bungie knows nothing of Halo 4 unless that is proven otherwise.
I believe in facts, and those are it.

Well, either way, I'd have to agree that the only thing connecting Halo to this ARG is speculation and that article, which in itself has some weasel words. It says "rumors circulated around that they were giving out motorized ice flies" at a Microsoft conference, which is telling. The description doesn't sound at all like the LED helicopters, and these rumors aren't sourced to anyone or anything- it sounds like the writer is confusing the E3 black envelopes and Bonnaroo helicopters, and hasn't really done much research on either of those specifically.
TL;DR- Sounds like a writer had an article due, heard a story from a buddy, and didn't do as much research as they could have.
It would be awesome if it turned out to be Halo, but I'm afraid 42e and the relation of Icefly to bees are the only connections at this point in time.

Fine. There is no direct link between this and Halo 4. FACT. There is a direct link between this and 5 Gum FACT. The entire idea that this has anything to do with Halo is completely speculation. FACT. For you to call me out on my speculation over something that is completely speculation in and of itself is asinine and offensive. OPINION.
Satisfied yet?

It was just a logical request not to mention Bungie in regards to Halo 4. *shrugs*
