Does that sound about right to everyone?

you posted precisely what I was going to post, or hping to see... so much confusion going on right now... someone should post those steps at the top of a sticky thread - either a new one as instructions, or edit an old sticky thread for this week's tasks...

I'm going to be hitting the 15:25 Abracadabra axon in Oklahoma City today and I'm looking for some opinions. I'm going to try showing up in military uniform with a roll of Cat5e cable and stating my specialty as communications (Nav & Comm.). Anyone try anything similar and had success or failure??

cross-posted for visibility:

got a live call!

Two of us in the GPAA were there, melissa had us take a picture of our special skills and e-mail it. Here's the pic we sent:

http://www.pitt.edu/~cmh42/haefele_deltinawildfire.jpg

And the text of the e-mail I sent with it:

Quote:
Melissa-

Crew submitting special skill set:

-books and axon data organized on paper for technical librarian Chad Haefele

-scope and radio for navigation officer DeltinaWildfire

This is in response to your request for this information at the 09:05 PDT axon earlier today.

Awaiting further orders.

-Technical Librarian 1st Class

8 minutes later I got this response from the gmail account:

Quote:
Visual evidence extremely impressive.
Excellent work, Chad and DeltinaWildfire.

Make of it what you will, I think including what axon your picture references may be important.

crew #s

melissa needs 250 rank and file. What if we recruit passersby to salute the crew, while at an axon. For example in the Davis axon today we plan to be science/medical, but would like to get civilians to salute us in some pics. Can she accept different types of crew members for an axon? Maybe 3 science team members with 10 or so rank and file saluting us? I think its at least worth a shot.

I can't find a thread for axon reports (for recorded calls, that is), and since my area doesn't have its own thread...Feel free to move this if there's a proper thread and I just missed it or something.

Posting this to let other Raleigh area beekeepers (I know you're out there now! *waves to the guy that forgot to give me his name yesterday*) know that this axon is potentially ANY one of the three phones in the phone bank to the right of the Cates Ave. entrance. I had been told that the phone was the one closest to the information desk. Time came, no ring. I started picking up the phone randomly to check. Nada. Then I realized....I could hear a phone ringing quietly. But it wasn't mine. Turns out it was the phone at the other end of the bank, which I didn't reach in time. Sad I waited around about five more minutes to make sure, but that was all she wrote.

So I missed one. But hey, two out of three isn't bad. Smile

(Also, I won't be getting this one again. It's a pain in the rear end.)

This week in the OCARG
----------------------------

No live calls this week. 9 total crew submitted and accepted. See crew shots at the OCARG Status Page. Jsailor submitted one new axon in the OC area.

Total axons answered: 9/13

4/4 at UCI Campus [10:02 H, 10:08 H, 10:19 H, 10:41 H] - No problems this week.

2/2 at the Wax Museum [17:04 H, 17:23 H] - No problems this week.

1/1 at the Block [17:59 H] - This is usually the one I get, but I couldn't make it again. Thanks to fubarz and chulo for subbing in for me again this week! 2 rank and file recruited here.

Personal axons:

2/3 Maj. Sena [08:10 H], Lt.Cmdr Scott [08:45 H], Lt.Cmdr GirlInFocus [17:46] - HHM says that she got the call, but there was no one there. I suspect hers will get answered today, even though its technically cancelled.

Other missed axons:

0/1 at The Promenade [17:40] - We know which phone this is. It's broken.

0/2 at Mission Viejo [10:40, 10:50] - No luck finding this one at all.

The end.

Um, I casually dubbed myself one of the Lincoln Park Pirates of Chicago yesterday when I ran to two axons and enhottened them.

First coordinate was my own crew axon, at 10:57 PDT. Seeing as how it was 5 minutes before the axon at 41.947079 -87.653555, I ended up standing in the CTA station vestibule, trying to look worried, and like I was waiting for someone. The CTA dude in the booth kept looking over at me, though, so I paid my fare and waited at the bottom of the steps leading up to the platform. Got the crew axon, and had her repeat a few times as I tried to record. On the second or third repeat, I took the escalator up to the phone. (for those Chicagoans who may want to try for this phone in the future and can't find info on it, it is the Addison red line El platform, north end. The coordinate points right at the phone at the middle of the platform, but don't bee fooled. On Aug. 24th we were lucky to have multiple people at that location, so that we got it hot the first week. Go to the north end! Walk towards Wrigley!)

One minute to spare. 11:02 PDT - Phone rang, I answered, and quickly determined that it was a recorded call. Same sound file, so I recorded again (it was better-sounding on the payphone than my cell, gosh darn it), and then took a picture or two at the phone of me doing a checklist at the axon. Well, OK, it was my thumb and a clipboard. I never did send that pic, though. More on this later.

Walked back to my car, hopped in, and drove down Clark St., parked, went and shopped a little to waste some time before the 13:10 (41.933446 -87.645575, 4th floor of the Century shopping center, back by the movie theater bathrooms, right-hand phone out of a bank of two) axon. This time I was alone, and it was a plain old regular automated call. Sigh. I did have a scare, though: at 13:08, the phone rang, and I picked it up to find nothing but silence. I said hello??? several times, and then the call disconnected. I really thought that perhaps it was a live call that had gone all wonky on her end, but then I checked my cell phone clock and realized that it had rung two minutes early, which is odd. So I am thinking someone cranked it in order to screw up the call, or maybe to make sure someone was there, but was too chicken to say anything. Or, it -was- a live call, and they just goofed somehow.

When I got back home, I saw how some established crew members were taking photos at home, with their cell phone or home phone in the picture, so I decided to show Melissa that I was a very earnest entertainer:

http://www.glitterbook.com/ensignactresskrystyn.jpg

She accepted the photo almost immediately, and so I was able to be part of the effort to unlock the she_died sound file. So very proud. Wink I figured it was my best shot, since I was alone at the payphones, and it was difficult to figure out what to do all alone, with a clipboard, juggling a digital camera.

I think I did frighten one woman at the red line stop, because she was looking suspiciously at the clipboard, and seemed unnerved by me answering the phone as soon as it rang, and then saying, "Covenant .... Covenant .... Covenant ...." in this even, soothing, well-enunciated sort of way. Heh.
