I think M jumped the megashark with this one. These theorems are getting more novel over time and less substantial. I wouldn't even take a free t-shirt that said I solved any of these.

This post should really be removed - it contains the answer to the theorem and that is generally an uncool thing to do

Automaton

I'm sure the Automaton seal would be easy to brute-force... I just don't know what I'm looking for. Anyone have a tiny nudge?

Also, @M.A.S. impossible: I don't see how it would be possible to cheat.

Remember how M said

I love letters -- every single one of 'em...
? Hope that helps!

Hey. This week's second-place solver here, and friend of several other frequent high-place finishers (although I think this week is the first time since I joined TMT that I've actually known the first-place finisher).

I can't speak for everyone with fast times, but in my case, as soon as the reminder email announced this week's title, it became pretty clear that having the relevant code close at hand when the theorem was released was going to be a pretty good idea.

As for
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
using analog clocks for that code
... that idea's been independently discovered and used in at least half a dozen competitive puzzle contexts. See http://www.t-hunts.com/420/clue5.html for a use of the concept from ten years ago. There's plenty of hardcore solvers that will instinctively make that association when confronted with

a series of times
.

Seriously. People who have enough experience with these kinds of puzzles really can do them that fast.

Check the "Notify me when M posts a new Theorem" box under "my account" if you want them - he announces the title a few hours in advance every week, as well as any new seals.

Ah, neat.

Also, @Pwandz: That was just the right nudge. Thanks!

Still not getting automaton...

Is this about finding the right rule and then look at the pattern, or I need to look at every single rule to get a holistic answer? Can someone help? Thanks!

Can anyone shove me a bit more? I can brute force through the different rules on automaton, but I don't even know what I'm looking for (even after reading the spoiler clue).

Still a tad confused

I think it relates to the ascii table somehow as the bottom row is clearly binary. But how that relates to the puzzle itself? No idea.

I have looked through all 255 rules and I still cannot find a pattern to discern a word or phrase. Any help would be appreciated.

The appropriate rule is within the first 25

I was in the top 20 this time, solving at 12:03. I guessed the nature of the code before it went up and had the appropriate page at the ready. I knew in seconds that I was correct. In retrospect, I could have been much faster if I had...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Taken it one step further and realized it would be mapped to times, and premapped the letters to their appropriate times, sorted by time.

automaton

Ok, solved it via brute force. Though even now knowing which rule it is, I still do not see how the problem had hinted at it. Is this meant to be solved brute force?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Unless "'em" was the hint... that is so.......... inelegant >_<

After reading the solution can you provide a hint to point the rest of us in the right direction?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
As in the previous spoilers... "em" is the hint at which one rule to look at. And it's among the first 25. And it's easy (though inelegant), don't over-think.
