I know nobody else has posted about being interested in the Boston event, but I'll certainly be there! If anyone else is planning to go, I would love to coordinate.

Ground

Just dropping a line, there is the slightest chance that I might make the trip from upstate NY to Boston Thursday to be on the ground for the drop. Though I wouldn't really count on it since it's a 3 hour drive each way and I work at night. But know that I really, really want to be there, but I have limitations and sleep requirements. Otherwise I get cranky Wink I will definitely be catching up with everything that goes down when I wake up assuming that I don't make it over tomorrow... In the off chance I'm going to make it out I'll update this post to let you know.

Crimson Angelus, just in case you do make it down, I'm planning to wait for 00:00 somewhere near Boston Common/Downtown Crossing for easy access to trains. If you find yourself in Boston tomorrow, PM me and I'll let you know where I end up Smile

I'm in place!

I'm in the center of Boston with decent Wifi access. Now, if only that timer would move a little faster...

Grats Boston team! I tried to join up last minute, but with unfiction blocked from work, Eolith was my point of contact, and I got to the drop point after you'd already left.

My story

Here's the play by play on what happened yesterday:

After arriving in Boston, I went to the Borders on State Street and camped out in their deserted travel section with my laptop. When the countdown hit 0, I was majorly disappointed that there were so many problems with the website. I got to the page and the video was trying to play, but thanks to the questionable wifi at Borders, I couldn't see anything. When New York and Orlando were posted, and people started saying that it would be two cities per hour, I was majorly disappointed, so I decided to take a walk, since I had been sitting on the floor in Borders for almost two hours.

The other important part of this story is that I don't have a smartphone, so while I was walking around, I was completely cut off from anything that was happening online. By about 4:25, this was starting to wear on me, so I pulled out my iPod and started looking for wifi in the area. The first that I found was the public wifi surrounding city hall, so I found a bench between two buildings and pulled out my laptop. I was concerned because it only had about an hour of battery left--if Boston information hadn't been posted by then, I would be cut off except for cell phone.

Luckily, the PDF was posted about 15 minutes later. I took one look at the picture and almost jumped out of my seat--the building in the background was clearly the same city hall I was sitting near. I put the coordinates into Google Maps, and it specified a spot about 500 feet from where I was sitting. I ran up some stairs and found the two rows of park benches that were in the picture.

Now, the picture was not very specific about where to look once I had gotten to this area, so I spent about 20 minutes walking up and down the rows of benches, looking for an envelope. I knew that I had gotten there quickly, so I doubted that anyone had beaten me there, but I was getting very frustrated that this was so hard to find. I had looked at the picture, counted benches, and knew where the picture had been taken, but there was nothing in that area... At last, I found it taped underneath one of the benches where it was visible ONLY if you were lying on the ground, looking up. Like others, inside the envelope was a key and a slip of paper with a phone number and a password. I texted the password to the phone number, and after providing my user name, I got a text with the address 1 Science Park and directions to show my key to the person waiting at the T. Rex.

I had plenty of problems getting to the Museum of Science--first I tried to walk and got lost, then I took the T, which had delays AND had closed the Science Park stop--but eventually I made it to the T. Rex, which sits outside the museum. My contact was standing next to it wearing a shirt with the icefly on it, and when I showed him my key, he pointed out a box that sat in the bushes next to the dinosaur. He was as excited to open it as I was, and after we had both oohed and aahed over it, he made a phone call and I sent a text saying that I had gotten the artifact. Almost immediately, I got a text telling me to "leave the canister plugged in, as it may take several seconds to activate." As there were no power outlets in the area (we were outside, next to a planter), they told me to just plug it in when I got home. At that point, I bid farewell to my contact and began the long process of getting home. (Carrying the box through public transportation in Boston earned me plenty of strange looks, including several from security, but I made it with no mishaps.)

When I got home, I plugged in my canister, and it took 20-30 seconds before it lit up. When it did, the fly glowed a constant teal, and unlike others, it hasn't been blinking at all since then (unless it did so while I was sleeping; I left it plugged in all night).

I've posted some pictures of the whole event on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/64687556@N07/sets/72157627091743692/

And if anyone has any questions, feel free to post and/or message me!

That is awesome, SeashellSeller! Thanks for sharing your story, I can't believe you ended up so close to the drop site by coincidence, that is absolutely epic and cool.
