Well, neither the first camera-phone email nor the big email with the rest of the pics got either a conformation or denial (Gee this seems a lot like the first week of crew acceptances) but here they are:

Observe The many Hats of Lt. Carlson.

So after I sent the e-mail to Melissa asking if "new recruits" (i.e. people off the street) were OK and got the reply commending me for my excellent initiative Very Happy, I figured I might as well get out there and start snapping. So I gathered up my digital camera and my laptop and headed out - where to, not sure yet...

Crap, low on gas. So I stop by the gas station where I usually fill up and throw some money into the tank. I also run in and pick up a soda - on the way out I notice there's a payphone over to the side. I figure "what the hell, can't hurt to look" and run over. Wonder of wonders, it accepts incoming calls - I didn't think there were any in Rochester, NY! So I snap a picture of the phone number and a picture of the payphone in general for later (for those of you unaware, Rochester, NY has had no axons for the entire game, which is rather disappointing considering we're the third largest city in NYS. So hopefully next week we'll have an axon - w00t!)

Next I stop by Wegmans - my mission: To get some candy bars to give away, a notepad and some pens in case I need to make up signs or give out information. I purchase the items and head back out to my car, where I mull over where I would best be served accosting people for rank and file pics. I decide to go to Marketplace Mall and head over there, all the while thinking "I can't believe I'm actually doing this!"

I park my car in the food court area, thinking that it's the busiest section of the mall and as such would have more chances. Unfortunately for me - no payphones there. A quick glance at the directory shows three areas with payphones, and I head over to the closest area.

I put down my plastic baggie with the notebook, pens, and goodies on a nearby bench, and sort of get everything ready. I then stand around - it's not the busiest place in the mall, but there's a few people wandering in and out every few minutes, so I figure it'll have to do. A few people wander by looking disinterested and avoiding eye contact... I start to get the jitters, but oh well, here goes...

"Excuse me, but could I have your help for a second?"
"Sure, with what?"
"I'm taking part in this internet scavenger hunt, and I need pictures of people standing next to payphones throwing a salute."
"..."
"I know it sounds crazy, but it'll only take a second..."
"OK, sure, why not?"
I manuever her next to the payphone, have her put up a salute and take her picture.
"Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it... if you like you can have some M&Ms or a Snickers bar.."
She accepts the M&Ms and walks off.

So the conversation usually goes for the next while I'm standing there. I don't ask everybody - just people who are on their own who don't look preoccupied or whatnot. I got the most hits toward the beginning - most people just say "OK, whatever" and let me do it. One person I saw walking out of the mall with Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, and I thought "Gamer - yep, he'll do it!" I explain it's for ilovebees and he goes "Oh, OK! Cool!" and eagerly accepts the offer. One other person seems mildly interested, and I catch her on the way out and explain more about the story. She actually seems very interested, and I give her pointers to the modblog and this forum (dunno if you're out there but hi!), so maybe we have another beekeeper on the loose! The one other notable person came back later and asked me "if you're looking to make me into some big a-hole on the internet". I assured him that I wasn't, the only thing that would happen would be his picture might be posted and nobody would really want to look at it. Also, most people don't accept candy - only about 4 people took M&Ms.

About an hour into my foray I decide to pack up and move to a different section of the mall, so I pack up my things and move. Unfortuntately, the second place turns out to be much less lucrative then the first - I only get about one person in the half hour that I'm there, and most of the people I ask say no. So I decide to move back to my first spot - still no luck. At this point I'm getting tired, my legs are getting tired and I just generally feel done. I ask one more person, this time saying "if you could take a picture of me that would be fine too." He agrees to take a picture of my ugly mug, which you can see below (I was distracted by something going on on the other side, I explained to Melissa that I was trying to keep an eye on the situation).

So at this point, I've sent in 11 pictures, plus two of the new axon - I never got any confirmation from Melissa but I do believe the rank and file number jumped up a bit a little while after I sent the pics in, so I believe they were accepted.

So that's my story. I was hoping to get 20 but that didn't happen... 11's not too shabby either though. To all crewmembers out there trying to get photographs - good luck, your crewmates are counting on you! Smile

You have until 12 AM PDT to resubmit, if you are able.

Okay guys, desperate times call for desperate measures. I am going to the local theater and mall to recruit "new crew" members. I want that WAVE UNLOCKED!!!
I just submited a pic of the IT peeps I reserved the digital cam from & had my gf march a number of her house mates to the nearest payphone & submitted that too. <pause while gmail updates> Sweet, she accepted them! It took longer than last time, but there's probabaly a lot of email moving out there.

I encourage you all: submit & have faith in the operator - her processing skillz are vast, mad & spelled w/ a 'z'.

Alright, since everyone else is posting them, I'll post the pics I took tonight.

The first is me being an engineer at an axon. Of course, by the time I got home we had that .wav unlocked, so it didn't count for much. Plus it's a horrible picture of me (wonders where the better ones are from earlier today at union station?)

The second is my roomate, whom I literally dragged out of the house when he got home to make him go take these pictures. He threw a box of mac & cheese at me when I told him we were going out before making dinner, but he ws really good about humoring me.

So, after long last, here are the pics:

I just got responses back from 2 of the images I sent to Melissa: one was for daboking, and the other was mine.

Here is her response to my picture: Very Happy She is too funny!

Lt. Aspmaster,
I see you suffered unfortunate disfigurement in the crash.
I am glad that you recovered enough, however, to continue with our mission. Submission accepted.

Here is Melissa's response to Daboking's picture:
