^He could be slipping in and out of comas. It's a believable theory.

True, but J's seen what this thing did to Alex, both directly and indirectly, and up until he watched that tape he had believed himself fortunate enough to avoid a direct encounter with the thing. Not sure I'd wanna know what happened next either, ignorance is bliss and all that. As for what J does with his time, we know he likes to change locations frequently, and the guy's gotta eat. Maybe he does just take up odd jobs in whatever area he's staying.

He keeps failing his save rolls, too. I don't think he's going to be leveling up any time soon.

Tsk tsk, all this sleeping now and he still hasn't recovered all of his hitpoints? So sad....

Jay is the maglite warrior. He doesn't need to have useless hitpoints and intelligence.
Except when he comes to a door that requires more than Adv. Maglite skills to pass...

You think that Jay would have taken a level in weapon specialization-gun and have equipped a shotgun by now. I sure would have.
I mean, every state except for IL now lets pretty much anyone over 21 run around willy nilly while packing heat [so long as other people can't see it].

^Troseph mentioned in the radio interview that people keep suggesting that, but they don't do it because that's not the kind of character Jay is.
"He's the kind of guy who takes a knife and a flashlight to an empty house, and then loses that knife."

Funny thought:
Maybe he wasn't actually expecting to find Alex or Brian when he went back to the house the third time.
Maybe he just really wanted that damn knife back. He does almost immediately pocket it once Tim's disarmed in 35.

Which explains why he doesn't let Alex get his greedy hands all over it!

As far as an OOG explanation, it could be that there was some mitigating circumstance that caused them to stop for a while, if that is the case I can understand that.
As far as an in game explanation I pondered this:
take the scariest experience you ever had, and then face it, in your mind for like an hour. And then wake up later not remembering what happened in between. Did you kill someone? did someone steal your car? does anyone know what you did. Then with that knowledge, realize that someone can see you and be in your face at any moment of any time, and possibly kill you or take control of your every action. Do you think you would want to see the next tape knowing that? Did J even have the balls to do think about what happened and not crack under the pressure like Alex did? It seems that he finally understood he needed to look at the tapes or else there could be something worse and he might not even know about it. and now we must await the exciting conclusion
