What if SOUNDS LIKE <blank> means sounds like nothing, or space, or empty?

Well I tried "obi_wan_politicians" but that didn't work. Laughing

Seriously, I do like using politicians, since Hertz is supposed to be a "divorced_bureaucrat".

Analyst_politicians didn't work either.

Back to lurking.

As long as you are guessing at words, remember what is happening in the conversation. Might be talking about Nick, Standish, spying, Troy, glassing bases, orbital platforms, some sort of special day, getting a job, Earth's future, asassination, or some other element of Rani/Herzog life.

my 2 cents.

first of all, what if the dashes are fill in the blanks?

"---------- SOUNDS LIKE ----------"

like, "DOG SOUNDS LIKE LOG"

Also, one of two or more words that have the same sound and often the same spelling but differ in meaning is a homonym. (homonym(s) = 404)

if the number of dashes matter, the only prepositions in the list that have ten chars are "UNDERNEATH" and "THROUGHOUT"

UNDERNEATH does not sound like THROUGHOUT, obviously, but I was thinking it might be a code? U = T, N = H, etc. probably not.

The most interesting lead I've found is what was hinted at earlier:
There are 41 phonemes in the English language (phoneme(s) = 404)
And a phoneme is a unit of SOUND in a language. "Sounds like" we're getting warmer? I hope so. this is driving me mad.

this has nothing to do with bees Smile except to observe how a preposition works.

we were told it was almost like an indian shooting a covered wagon with an arrow:
"the arrow flew _____ the wagon"
so towards, over, under, around, through, etc

no luck with that though Sad i've tried things like inquisition_charade, but nothing there

So what if the SAME words can fit into the blanks in both clues? I.e. something like

flew SOUNDS LIKE flue
AND
flew THROUGH/OVER/ETC. THE flue

you get the idea... but with words that would actually fit.

One other thing: we've been taking "sounds like" to mean "___ sounds similar to". What if instead it means "sounds such as"? Then you might be able to get "sounds such as prepositions"... but that doesn't really make much sense. Just a crazy suggestion.

My thought was prepositions (sound like) propositions...

But prepositions_propositions.wav and preposition_proposition.wav didn't work.

I think the lines of dashes were just to link the two clues together. The list of prepositions has the dashes too.

dangit! i just scared myself! i thought... "hmm.... they're only directional prepositions.... so..... 'sounds like directions'... hmmm.... insurrections? no... insurrection!! OMGWTF!! I GOT! I GOT... oh... wait....... damnit... just Jan and Gilly from before...... grrrrrrrrrrrrr" Embarassed

there are a handfull of non-directional prepositions out there (for, of, like), the ones in the list are all directional however.... does that mean anything?

Alright I've got an idea. I don't think the number 41 is important, because there aren't all that many prepositions to begin with unless you start combining words or changing plurality. Also, not all of these necessarily represent a location. The underlying rule for a preposition is that it specifies "Time and Place". Before, After, etc. could specify time as well as place, so I don't think these are all locational.

Now my current thinking is.. "Sounds like Time and Place". (time_and_place.wav doesn't work incidentally).

So I think we should either look for words that rhyme with "Time and place" or try to think of an actual time and place.

IMO, trying to think of possible filenames based on what could possibly be in the dialogue is a large waste of time - there's no guarantee that the filename will relate at all to the subject of the audio clip. One character at any point could say a cliche or metaphor or something, and that could be the filename, it's happened before...

so while you are free to try out possible phrases that may be used in the clip, I'd say your time would be better used trying to solve the puzzle...

but that's just IMO Wink

I had a thought that "SOUNDS LIKE" might refer to music and tried to see if the word list could be translated to notes in a scale. Here's what I came up with, using the length of the word and the dashes to represent a C Major scale, ending with C (since that's the first note).

Code:

ABCDEFGABC
----------
UNDERNEATH      C
WITHOUT         G
OVER         D
BEHIND         F
AGAINST         G
INTO         D
AT            B
ASIDE         E
INSIDE         F
IN            B
BELOW         E
ABOVE         E
BENEATH         G
BESIDE         F
AFTER         E
UNDER         E
AROUND         F
ONTO         D
ACROSS         F
BY            B
BETWEEN         G
AMONG         E
TOWARD         F
THROUGH      G
ALONG         E
OUTSIDE         G
ON            B
PAST         D
OFF                C
OPPOSITE      A
WITHIN         F
FROM         D
ABOUT         E
WITH         D
AMID         D
TO            B
BEFORE         F
ROUND         E
THROUGHOUT      C
NEAR         D
BEYOND         F
 ----------

Sorry for the wonky formatting, the tabs didn't translate correctly.

Anyway, my hope was that the resulting melody might be a recognizeable song, but upon playing around with my keyboard, I can't make it anything I recognize. Without knowing the tempo or length of each note it would be pretty hard.

If anyone wants to try transposing the key or noodling around with this idea more, that would be great.
